Magnetically controlled shape memory (MSM) materials are a new way to produce motion and force. The material changes shape in a magnetic field. Shape changes are even 10 percent and response time is less than a millisecond. Usual applications of the material are actuators that produce linear motion. In this paper the magnetic controlled properties of MSM material, the operation principle, design and control method of an inchworm type linear MSM motor are introduced. The tested results of a prototype machine are also presented.

Rapid advances in the real-time embedded operating systems necessitate the development of Internet oriented, application specific embedded operating systems. The ASOS (Application Specific embedded Operating systems) has now become a promising research direction of the embedded operating system. The paper clarifies the concept of the ASOS, and takes the embedded operating system applied in the traffic signal controller we are now developing to illustrate the main characteristics of the ASOS. Benefits from the CBSE(Component-based Software engineering)include system quality improvement, shorter time to market, integration of complex systems, etc. However, as for the embedded system, the component-based technology and theories still in an exploration period, though many projects are carried on. In this paper, we present the process of our approach to construct the ASOS based on the component technology. © 2003 IEEE.

When the process uncertainty size increases, even linear minimum phase systems must sacrifice desirable aggressive feedback control benefits to avoid an excessive 'cost of feedback', while preserving the robust stability. With a suitable uncertainty division and a QFT controller-prefilter to command each uncertainty subset inside a controller-scheduler structure, it is possible to enhance the feedback tracking performance without an excessive bandwidth. To preserve the robust stability from any failure in the switching, each controller is designed to be stable in the whole uncertainty domain, and as accurate in command tracking as desired in its uncertainty subset. © 2003 EUCA.

Tracking feedback control trade-offs increase dangerously with arbitrarily large uncertainties in the process mode!. This is shown by the bounds in the QFT domain. In this context, the paper develops a theory on the contribution of the plant uncertainty to the tracking QFT bounds through a serious study of tracking bound formulas. From this, a methodology for uncertainty fragmentation is developed. It hopes to loosen the bound toughness, or the control design trade-offs. Better feedback benefits can be achieved while reducing the high-frequency amplification of noises and disturbances at the plant input at the same time. Different QFT controllers in a controller-scheduler structure should drive different uncertainty boundaries. © 2003 IFAC.

For the operation of boom cranes a significant high level of experience is needed to achieve a large amount of handled containers. Therefore, automation systems with anti-sway abilities for boom cranes were developed to increase the handling rate especially for inexperienced crane operators. In the paper, an optimal control approach is presented as an alternative to feedback control systems. After deriving the nonlinear dynamic model, the anti-sway problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimal control problem. The numerical solution method for this optimal control problem is presented. The results are illustrated at measurements for the harbour mobile crane LIEBHERR LHM400.

In this paper, a genetic algorithm based on Infeasibility Degree (IFD) selection is proposed for constrained optimization problems. Initial solutions and intermediate solutions are allowed to be feasible as well as infeasible as penalty function methods. The infeasibility degree of a solution (IFD) is defined as the sum of the square value of all the constraints violation and the infeasibility degree selection of the population is designed through checking whether the IFD of a solution is less than or equal to a threshold value or not to decide the candidate solution is acceptable or refusable. The method is divided into two stages: first, initial IFD selection is carried out to produce enough initial feasible solution;then the GAs based on Annealing IFD selection is applied to search for the feasible optimum solution. Two selected problems are used to test the algorithm performance.

In this paper, an explicit expression to compute H/sup /spl infin// norm, which is recently obtained for continuous-time state-space symmetric systems by using a particular solution of the bounded real lemma for a symmetric system, is extended to more general case of continuous-time symmetric systems and also to discrete-time symmetric systems. The computations of H/sup /spl infin// norm only need to compute the maximum eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix, which only contains the system matrices.

The feedback control structures are required in the presence of any kind of uncertainty. The benefits of the feedback are mainly paid with an excessive bandwidth that amplifies the sensor noise, saturating the actuators. This implies the necessity of design tradeoffs highly transparent from the Quantitative Feedback Theory. Supposing a given uncertainty for a plant, the set of performance and stability requirements will condition the problem solution. Taking advantage of the QFT bound typology and formulation, the contribution of the robust specification values to their simultaneous achievement will be analysed and particularly as regards the challenging task of the controller design.
