Soft robotics has advanced the field of biomedical engineering by creating safer technologies for interfacing with the human body. One of the challenges in this field is the realization of modular soft basic constituents and accessible assembly methods to increase the versatility of soft robots. We present a soft pneumatic actuator composed of two elastomeric strands that provide interdependent axial and radial expansion due to the modularity of the components and their helical arrangement. The actuator reaches 35% of elongation with respect to its initial height and both chambers achieve forces of 1N at about 19kPa. We describe the design, fabrication, modeling and benchtop testing of the soft actuator towards realizing 3D functional structures with potential medical applications. An example of application for soft medical robots is tissue regenerative for the long-gap esophageal atresia condition.

The study on the dynamics of interacting diseases has attracted considerable attention in recent years. This paper proposes a model for two interacting epidemics spreading concurrently on a two-layer network, where both the epidemic thresholds and the dynamics of disease outbreaks are investigated. The analytical expression of the epidemic threshold shows strong coupling between the two interacting epidemics. Moreover, two metrics, the maximum prevalence and the highest spreading speed, are proposed to describe the outbreak process. Theoretical analysis together with extensive simulations illustrate the functions of various factors, including the network topological parameters, percentage of overlapped network links, vulnerable individuals, and the reciprocity of the two diseases. It is found that the seemingly important factor, i.e., the percentage of overlapped links, possesses no effect on the propagation, while the frequently overlooked factor, i.e., the percentage of vulnerable individuals, has significant effects. For the interaction of the two diseases, the recovery state of one disease is more influential than the other in both the mutually enhanced and the mutually impaired situations.

On the basis of increasing the transmission distance of the 1553B bus, in order to maintain the simplicity and stability of the bus and improve its anti-jamming ability, the 1553B signal relay circuit based on FPGA is designed in this paper. The signal transmission part is consists of the software and the hardware, and the chip of ZYNQ series is used in the FPGA. Firstly, the transmitted signal oscillation is transformed into a group of positive and negative differential signals, which are realized by transformer (pmdb25). Secondly, the signal is sent to the main control chip of ZYNQ series through signal acquisition chip and level conversion chip. Finally, the data is processed by software program and forwarded to the receiver. The specific experiments have been done on the 1553B signal transmission platform, which significantly show that the proposed scheme is reasonable and reliable.

Similitude design plays a vital role in the analysis of vibration and shock problems encountered in large engineering equipment. Similitude design, including dimensional analysis and governing equation method, is founded on the dynamic similitude theory. This study reviews the application of similitude design methods in engineering practice and summarizes the major achieve- ments of the dynamic similitude theory in structural vibration and shock problems in different fields, including marine structures, civil engineering structures, and large power equipment. This study also reviews the dynamic similitude design methods for thin-walled and composite material plates and shells, including the most recent work published by the authors. Structure sensitivity analysis is used to evaluate the scaling factors to attain accurate distorted scaling laws. Finally, this study discusses the existing problems and the potential of the dynamic similitude theory for the analysis of vibration and shock problems of structures.
