DRAM row buffer conflicts can increase memory access latency significantly. This paper presents a new pageallocation-based optimization that works seamlessly together with some existing hardware and software optimizations to eliminate significantly more row buffer conflicts. Validation in simulation using a set of selected scientific and engineering benchmarks against a few representative memory controller optimizations shows that our method can reduce row buffer miss rates by up to 76% （with an average of 37.4%）. This reduction in row buffer miss rates will be translated into performance speedups by up to 15% （with an average of 5%）.

Early design space exploration (DSE) is a key ingredient in system-level design of MPSoC-based embedded systems. The state of the art in this field typically still explores systems under a single, fixed application workload. In reality, however, the applications are concurrently executing and contending for system resources in such systems. As a result, the intensity and nature of application demands can change dramatically over time. This paper therefore introduces the concept of workload scenarios in the DSE process, capturing dynamic behavior both within and between applications. More specifically, we present and evaluate a novel, scenario-based DSE approach based on a coevolutionary genetic algorithm.

This paper studies an approach to enhance the trust in the widespread use of Body Sensor Networks (BSN) in Healthcare. To address the wide variety in medical indications and differences between patients, we assume that such BSNs are programmable and highly flexible in their functionality. Yet this opens a vulnerability to malicious attacks and intrusion of the patient's privacy. We study the work flow in a typical medical scenario, we map the (implied or evidence-based) trust relations and we use this to propose a scheme for verifying the authenticity and trustworthiness without prohibitively interfering with common practices. Our proposed framework is currently being refined in the VITRUVIUS project, for instance to test the feasibility of its implementation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

A fundamental building block of secure group communication is the establishment of a common group key. This can be divided into key agreement and key distribution. Common group key agreement protocols are based on the Diffie-Hellman (DH) key exchange and extend it to groups. group key distribution protocols are centralized approaches which make use of one or more special key servers. In contrast to these approaches, we present a protocol which makes use of the Tree Parity Machine key exchange between multiple parties. It does not need a centralized server and therefore is especially suitable for ad-hoc networks of any kind. © 2007 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers *** Rights Reserved.

system engineers are facing demanding challenges in terms of complexity and interconnectedness. Current research initiatives like Organic or Autonomic Computing propose to increase the freedom of the system to be developed using concepts like adaptivity and self-organisation. Adaptivity means that for such systems we defer a part of the design process from design time to runtime. Therefore, we need a runtime infrastructure which takes care of runtime modifications. This paper presents a meta-design process to develop adaptive systems and parametrise the runtime infrastructure in a unified way. To demonstrate the proposed design process, we applied it to a communication scenario and evaluate the resulting system in a realistic setting.

We have been witnessing a rapid growth in quantum computing research over the years, with the emergence of demonstrable quantum computers of moderate size. The major issues that are faced to run a quantum algorithm reliably on these systems are: (i) lower qubit coherence period, (ii) noisy primitive gate operations, (iii) limited number of available physical qubits, and (iv) support of restricted set of 2-qubit operations. Overcoming these issues mandates physical resources that exceeds the capabilities of these noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) systems. On the other hand, computation using bare qubits get further disturbed due to the inclusion of additional gates to mitigate the nearest neighbor constraints. In the present work, the 2-dimensional square, heavy-hex and fully hexagonal qubit coupling lattices are considered for mapping quantum circuits. The benefits are assessed in terms of minimal additional gates needed to satisfy the nearest neighbor (NN) constraint and the compilation complexity of mapping circuits on these architectures. From the experiments by mapping benchmark circuits on 16-qubit square and 65-qubit heavy-hex architectures from IBM as well as on a 64-qubit fully hexagonal architecture, it is observed that none of the square or heavy-hex lattice architecture provides uniform compilation advantage compared to the fully hexagonal architecture. It is expected that beyond the NISQ era, strongly connected lattices like hexagonal will become practically feasible. © 2022 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). All rights reserved.

Explorative research is a vital part of biological sciences. Biologists frequently have to examine and compare multiple (large) sets of biological data in an interactive and explorative manner. Exploring alternative ways of examining the data and managing the necessary resources often require substantial (manual) effort and time. In this paper, we present a concrete example of how VLAM, a grid-based workflow management system, can enhance experimentation. We discuss in detail the process of developing the SigWin-detector, an application in the domain of bioinformatics. We show that SigWin-detector can promptly identify regions of increased gene expression in transcriptome maps and periodicity in weather data. We also show that the workflow can be extended or partially modified. The individual modules can also be used to compose different experiments. SigWin-detector fulfills the requirements of interactive and explorative experimentation. ©2006 IEEE.

As networked embedded sensors and actuators become more and more widespread, software developers encounter the difficulty to create applications that run distributed on these nodes: Typically, these nodes are heterogeneous, resource-limited, and there is no centralized control. The Ambicomp project tackles this problem. Its goal is to provide a distributed Java Virtual Machine (VM) that runs on the bare sensor node hardware. This VM creates a single system illusion across several nodes. Objects and threads can migrate freely between these nodes. In this paper, we address the problem of globally accessible objects. We describe how scalable source routing, a DHT-inspired routing protocol, can be used to allow access to objects regardless of their respective physical location and without any centralized component. © 2008 IEEE.

Within the last decade, technical systems that are capable of self-adaptation at runtime emerged as challenging approach to cope with the increasing complexity and interconnectedness in today's development and management processes. One major aspect of these systems is their ability to learn appropriate responses for all kinds of possibly occurring situations. Learning requires a goal function given by the user - which is subject to modifications at runtime. In order to allow for flexible manipulations of goals within the system's operation period, the learning component must be able to keep knowledge in order to respond to varying goals quickly. This paper describes attempts to implementing flexible learning in rule-based systems. First results show that efficient approaches are possible even in real-world applications.
