The nonstandard H(infinity) ''two-disk'' optimization problem [GRAPHICS] for a plant P0 and weights WV in H(infinity) plays a basic role in robust feedback analysis. Here, its solutions are characterized using Banach space duality theory, and shown to satisfy a flatness or ''allpass'' condition. A related numerical solution method is outlined. For a limiting case of sharp cutoff filters, an explicit 'two arc' result is obtained for the optimal robust disturbance problem.

Speech separation aims to equip machines with the human ability of selective listening, i.e. to focus attention on specific information in spoken communication. Studies have shown that the language spoken in a cocktail party scenario matters. While the development of speech separation models can leverage extensive databases, for the majority of languages only very limited data is available. This work presents the very first study on speech separation for low-resource languages. We choose blind source separation as the task to be studied and analyze three strategies to overcome the data scarcity of two low-resource languages from the GlobalPhoneMS2 database. We show that data from other languages can be used to develop models that work for low-resource languages. Finetuning additionally boosts the performance, and training on multiple languages increases both performance and robustness. We show that dynamic mixing in the development helps to find a trade-off between performance and development time.

This paper presents a practical methodology for optimizing the geometry of electrical grounding grids at industrial frequencies of 50Hz and 60Hz, integrating advanced calculation techniques and evolutionary algorithms to improve the safety and operational performance of electrical grounding systems. The proposed approach is particularly beneficial for industrial automation and control systems, where effective grounding is necessary to maintain system reliability and prevent downtime. This methodology employs mathematical modeling and computational tools to optimize grid parameters, ensuring compliance with safety standards while reducing operational costs, thus contributing to the overall efficiency of automated systems in industrial environments. The study reports a reduction of up to 66% in the number of vertical rods and 40% in horizontal conductors compared to traditional methods. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can significantly reduce material usage and costs while maintaining electrical safety in accordance with regulatory standards, making it applicable to a wide range of industrial settings, including substations and automated facilities. © 2025 The Authors

Hand Gesture Recognition from an Open-Set Perspective

Existing hand gesture recognition methods predominantly rely on a close-set assumption, which in essence limits the viewpoints, gesture categories, and hand shapes at test time to closely resemble those seen during training. This requirement is however rarely met in practice, as images are often captured from unconstrained viewpoints, with novel gestures and unseen hand shapes that can differ significantly from the training data. This motivates us to investigate an open-set hand gesture recognition problem, where hand gestures are still recognizable from unconstrained viewpoints, and novel gesture classes and hand shapes can be incrementally learned with just a few examples. To address this, we propose a viewpoint influence elimination network that extracts view-independent features, significantly improving performance in scenarios with unconstrained viewpoints. Moreover, a joint-weighted classification scheme is introduced to augment the cosine similarity metric for evaluating few-shot incremental learning of novel gestures and shapes. Finally, as existing hand gesture recognition datasets primarily adhere to the close-set assumption, a new hand gesture recognition dataset, OHG, is introduced in this paper, that includes a wide range of viewpoints, diverse gesture classes, and distinct hand shapes. Experimental hand gesture recognition results demonstrate the superior performance of our approach in both unconstrained viewpoint and few-shot incremental learning scenarios. Hierarchical structure in the supervisory control of discrete-event systems is formalized in the automaton framework of P.J. Ramadge and W.M. Wonham (SIAM J. Cont. Optimiz., vol.25, no.1, p.206-30, 1987). The setup embodies a low-level real-world model controlled by an operator and a high-level abstract model virtually controlled by a manager. The two levels are connected by command and information channels. Concepts of hierarchical consistency are proposed, relating high-level behavior required by the manager to low-level behavior achievable by the operator. It is shown that consistency can be realized by appropriately refining the information sent up by the operator to the manager.< >

The field of bioelectronic medicine has advanced rapidly from rudimentary electrical therapies to cutting-edge closed-loop systems that integrate real-time physiological monitoring with adaptive neuromodulation. Early innovations, such as cardiac pacemakers and deep brain stimulation, paved the way for these sophisticated technologies. This review traces the historical and technological progression of bioelectronic medicine, culminating in the emerging potential of closed-loop devices for multiple disorders of the brain and body. We emphasize both invasive techniques, such as implantable devices for brain, spinal cord and autonomic regulation, while we introduce new prospects for non-invasive neuromodulation, including focused ultrasound and newly developed autonomic neurography enabling precise detection and titration of inflammatory immune responses. The case for closed-loop non-invasive autonomic neuromodulation (incorporating autonomic neurography and splenic focused ultrasound stimulation) is presented through its applications in conditions such as sepsis and chronic inflammation, illustrating its capacity to revolutionize personalized healthcare. Today, invasive or non-invasive closed-loop systems have yet to be developed that dynamically modulate autonomic nervous system function by responding to real-time physiological and molecular signals;it represents a transformative approach to therapeutic interventions and major opportunity by which the bioelectronic field may advance. Knowledge gaps remain and likely contribute to the lack of available closed loop autonomic neuromodulation systems, namely, (1) significant exogenous and endogenous noise that must be filtered out, (2) potential drift in the signal due to temporal change in disease severity and/or therapy induced neuroplasticity, and (3) confounding effects of exogenous therapies (e.g., concurrent medications that dysregulate autonomic nervous system functions). Autonomous Industrial Cyber-Physical systems (ICPS) represent a future vision where industrial systems achieve full autonomy, integrating physical processes seamlessly with communication, computing and control technologies while holistically embedding intelligence. Cloud-Fog Automation is a new digitalized industrial automation reference architecture that has been recently proposed. This architecture is a fundamental paradigm shift from the traditional International Society of Automation (ISA)-95 model to accelerate the convergence and synergy of communication, computing, and control towards a fully autonomous ICPS. With the deployment of new wireless technologies to enable almost-deterministic ultra-reliable low-latency communications, a joint design of optimal control and computing has become increasingly important in modern ICPS. It is also imperative that system-wide cyber-physical security are critically enforced. Despite recent advancements in the field, there are still significant research gaps and open technical challenges. Therefore, a deliberate rethink in co-designing and synergizing communications, computing, and control (which we term "3C co-design") is required. In this paper, we position Cloud-Fog Automation with 3C co-design as the new paradigm to realize the vision of autonomous ICPS. We articulate the state-of-the-art and future directions in the field, and specifically discuss how goal-oriented communication, virtualization-empowered computing, and Quality of Service (QoS)-aware control can drive Cloud-Fog Automation towards a fully autonomous ICPS, while accounting for system-wide cyber-physical security. © 2025, CC BY-SA.

The goals of this article are twofold: (1) to provide a brief tutorial of the application of low-density parity check (LDPC) codes for partial response (PR) channels under the framework of turbo equalization and (2) to highlight the use of structured LDPC codes in PR systems. We begin by introducing LDPC codes, their graph representations and associated sum-product decoding algorithm, followed by describing the general framework of iterative equalization and decoding approach to combat ISI. We then present explicit constructions of structured LDPC codes, which facilitate efficient implementation of encoding and decoding and show simulation results.

Reduced-order observer for large-scale systems

The authors present a novel reduced-order observer for large-scale continuous-time systems. The dynamics of the reduced-order observer are derived only from the set of unstable and/or poorly damped eigenvalues of the system. This makes the proposed observer very attractive for applications to systems with high dimensionality. A simple and systematic design method is presented and a numerical example illustrates the properties of the new observer and its design method.

This paper presents a method for the design of decentralised controllers for interconnected dynamic systems with structured uncertainties. The design problem is formulated as a constrained linear quadratic optimal regulator problem, where the cost function is designed to incorporate the system uncertainties. Conditions are then derived for choosing the state and control weighting matrices that guarantee closed-loop stability in the presence of the uncertainties. Once these matrices are appropriately chosen, a generalised Riccati equation is solved and a robust decentralised controller is obtained. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the controller design method.
