We propose an online identification scheme for discrete-time piece-wise affine state-space models based on a system of adaptive algorithms running in two timescales. A stochastic approximation algorithm implements an online deterministic annealing scheme at a slow timescale, estimating the partition of the augmented state-input space that defines the switching signal. At the same time, an adaptive identification algorithm, running at a higher timescale, updates the parameters of the local models based on the estimate of the switching signal. Identifiability conditions for the switched system are discussed and convergence results are given based on the theory of two-timescale stochastic approximation. In contrast to standard identification algorithms for piece-wise affine systems, the proposed approach progressively estimates the number of modes needed and is appropriate for online system identification using sequential data acquisition. This progressive nature of the algorithm improves computational efficiency and provides real-time control over the performance-complexity trade-off, desired in practical applications. Experimental results validate the efficacy of the proposed methodology.

The conventional air and liquid cooling based thermal management strategies in mm-wave active phased arrays are illustrated with several examples from the literature. The key role of antenna engineers in electronics thermal management is discussed. The intriguing concept of using the antennas as auxiliary heat dissipators is recapitulated with a focus on the past and recent developments. The multiphysics (electromagnetic and thermal) modeling and design approaches of such dual function antennas are outlined. Some of the future multidisciplinary research challenges in heatsink antennas are identified. © 2022 European Microwave Association (EuMA).

The importance of proper data normalization for deep neural networks is well known. However, in continuous-time state-space model estimation, it has been observed that improper normalization of either the hidden state or hidden state derivative of the model estimate, or even of the time interval can lead to numerical and optimization challenges with deep learning based methods. This results in a reduced model quality. In this contribution, we show that these three normalization tasks are inherently coupled. Due to the existence of this coupling, we propose a solution to all three normalization challenges by introducing a normalization constant at the state derivative level. We show that the appropriate choice of the normalization constant is related to the dynamics of the to-be-identified system and we derive multiple methods of obtaining an effective normalization constant. We compare and discuss all the normalization strategies on a benchmark problem based on experimental data from a cascaded tanks system and compare our results with other methods of the identification literature.

This work presents the results of the examination of the HeLa cell line exposure on the ELF-EMF (extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field). In particular, the relationship between ELF-EMF exposition time and cell death. The examination of cell death hallmarks were examined by estimation levels of selected proteins - FACL4 (a protein that is a part of the ferroptosis pathway) and CK18 (Cytokeratin related to necrosis and apoptosis pathways) in the proposed model of workers exposed to ELF-EMF week. © 2024 IEEE.

Optimal design of uniformly-fed aperiodic millimeter-wave phased array topologies for site-specific and quasi interference-free operation is presented. Several use cases with different number of line-of-sight cells in the close vicinity of the base station, and for various widths and shapes of the cells, are analyzed. The arrays are synthesized by applying an iterative convex optimization technique. The simulation results of 256-element arrays indicate strong intra-cell and inter-cell isolation with around -40 dB maximal side lobe level. The proposed technique is found to be especially useful in the application scenarios supporting sparsely distributed narrow communication cells. © 2022 European Microwave Association (EuMA).

Blood is vital for transporting oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to all body parts as it circulates through arteries and veins. It removes carbon dioxide, regulates body temperature, and maintains the body's immune system. Individuals constantly need blood and its derivatives to save their lives and improve their health through medical treatments and surgical operations. Liver diseases are one of the diseases that affects the health of individuals and requires blood to continue living. These diseases cause significant damage to people's health, and early diagnosis plays a crucial role in saving lives. In this paper, machine learning algorithms (support vector machine and random forest) are involved in detecting liver diseases and determining whether donors are suitable to donate blood from blood values. This paper is applied research that found that the performance measures of the random forest algorithm achieved excellent performance in identifying suitable people to donate blood. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

Decomposition offers the potential to reduce the complexity of model-based optimization, prediction, control and diagnosis by accounting for the structure and sparsity of the describing model. Motivated by this fact, a rich and powerful collection of decomposition methods are available for model based diagnosis of large-scale complex dynamic systems, too. At the same time, one usually does not have enough information about a large-scale complex dynamic system to construct its precise enough model, so a kind of qualitative dynamic model is often used for the diagnosis [1]. Two structural decomposition based qualitative diagnostic methods are presented in this lecture, together with their component-driven system decomposition ***, a model-based diagnostic method is described that is able to detect and isolate non-technical losses (illegal loads) in low voltage electrical grids of one transformer area [2]. As a preliminary off-line step of the diagnosis, a powerful electrical decomposition method is proposed, which breaks down the overall network to subsystems with one feeder layout enabling to make the necessary computations efficient. The diagnostic method is based on analyzing the differences between the measured and model-predicted voltages. The uncertainty in the model parameters together with the measurement uncertainties are also taken into account to make the approach applicable in real-world cases. The proposed method is able to detect and localize multiple illegal loads, and the amount of the illegal consumption can also be *** a second case study, a high level decomposition approach for process system fault diagnosis using event traces is given [3], [4]. Using a simple component graph model behind the process system and the measured trace applied for the diagnosis, the method can find the root cause(s) of propagating failures between separate components. This article presents an onboard perception-assisted high-fidelity simulation framework for autonomous planetary soft-landing, enabling visual information processing tightly integrated with advanced onboard guidance system in a realistic simulation environments. Utilizing the open source Unity game engine, a physics-based simulation toolbox integrated with the Robotic Operating System (ROS2), we effectively emulate the motion of spacecraft approaching planetary terrain. The simulation environment features a realistic 3D terrain model and a lander spacecraft equipped with onboard camera to effectively capture detailed local terrain images. The simulation engine accurately captures the spacecraft’s 6-degrees of freedom motion, seamlessly integrating space craft orientation with the associated camera feed while incorporating various illumination conditions using a light source representing the Sun. To demonstrate the efficacy of the framework, we implement a recently developed attitude-constrained minimum jerk guidance algorithm to emulate spacecraft motion. Concurrently, the visual feed from the onboard RGB camera is processed through a gradient extraction-based perception system, providing the visual odometer. This system identifies provably safe landing sites, effectively avoiding potential risks of landing on uneven terrain. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Formal safety guarantees on the synthesis of controllers for stochastic systems can be obtained using correct-by-design approaches. These approaches often use abstractions as finite-state Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). As the state space of these MDPs grows, the curse of dimensionality makes the computational and memory cost of the probabilistic guarantees, quantified with dynamic programming, scale exponentially. In this work, we leverage decoupled dynamics and unravel, via dynamic programming operations, a tree structure in the Canonical Polyadic Decomposition (CPD) of the value functions. For discrete-time stochastic systems with syntactically co-safe linear temporal logic (scLTL) specifications, we provide provable probabilistic safety guarantees and significantly alleviate the computational burden. We provide numerical studies and validations of the theoretical results on several typical case studies and showcase that the uncovered tree structure enables efficient reductions in the computational burden. In this paper, a partially double pass configuration in serial hybrid fiber amplifier is experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed design, a double pass erbium gain and single pass Raman gain are achieved serially. A total pump power of 450 mW (400 mW for 1495 nm Raman amplifier and 50 mW for1480 nm in erbium amplifier) were used. At -30 dBm input signal power and optimum pumps conditions, the achieved flatness bandwidth is 80 nm (1530-1610 nm) in the conventional and long bands (C+L) bands. In addition, the obtained average gain level is 33 dB. While the obtained flatness gain is 85 nm (1525-1610 nm) within the large input signal power region at -5 dBm. By choosing a proper pump wavelength that avoid the overlapping between Raman and erbium peaks gain, a wide flatness gain is obtained. © 2023 IEEE.
