Network communication has been proven to be a very important tool and a key factor in the recent development and progress of the power grid operation. It is also considered as the foundation for the smart grid because information and communication are integrated into electricity distribution to achieve reliable and accurate knowledge of the power grid. In previous years, absorbing energy from substations and delivering it to customers was the only type of interaction we knew between utility companies and customers. Presently, the growing connections of small distributed generation units caused by the cost reduction of most of the technologies used in the generation and storage of electrical energy, along with the potential benefits of renewable energy have pushed many researchers to look into the improvement of information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to ensure a bidirectional flow of power and data. Moreover, the evolution of information and communication technologies and its applications to smart grid have converted the smart grid into a cyber-physical system where vulnerabilities and additional security challenges such as cyber-threats and cyber-attacks have emerged. Previously, we have demonstrated that using machine learning-based processing on data gathered from communication networks and the power grid was a promising solution for detecting cyber threats by implementing a co-simulation of cyber-security for cross-layer strategy. Since the majority of the challenges observed can only be solved in the network communication layer, we present in this work a physics-based state estimation model of the communication network system towards enhanced cyber-physical security of the smart grid. Information integration with the previously developed machine learning model is developed, providing an enhanced cyber-physical security application for the smart grid. Micro-calorimetry targeting sub-nanowatt resolution is fundamental for high-resolution thermal applications in the biological and chemical domains. Also, CMOS compatibility is crucial for system-on-chip devices in line with current technological trends, as well as point-of-care portability, low-cost batch production, ease of fabrication, and miniaturization represent significant strengths. However, compatibilization issues like size disparity, bonding strength, lack of standardization and electrical-fluidic ports mixture, faced when integrating a CMOS die within a microfluidics platform represent major challenges up to date. In this work, we demonstrate a Lab-on-CMOS micro-calorimeter combining a CMOS-MEMS 4-MHz CC-Beam as resonant temperature sensing element and a PDMS-based microfluidics platform for micro-channel routing to achieve sub-mK temperature resolution and ultra-fast response in a 500-pL reaction chamber.

Due to increasing the demand for using photovoltaic power system that uses sustainable and renewable energy sources to meet power demand, many studies were investigated to improve the photovoltaic power system operation. In this paper, the power system quality will be discussed to show the impact of power quality on the electrical grid by analyzing the nominal current and voltage output from the inverter at different weather conditions and different switching frequencies. Power quality is considered one of the major issues that need to be addressed. The low quality ofpower operation may cause disturbance and economic losses. The realtime simulation will be done by using MATLAB/Simulink.

The least squares estimator is the most popular identification method. In the absence of prior knowledge on the unknown noise, uniform weights on all samples are often as-sumed. In reality, potentially unknown contamination is always present and the uniform weights are not necessarily the best. Further, explicit information about the nature of contamination is usually absent. To this end, a relaxed-tilted least squares method is proposed here to assign unequal weights so that the effect of undesired noise contamination can be mitigated. The relaxed-tilted least squares method tilts the uniform prior on the samples so as to move the uniform distribution in a direction that enjoys the smallest estimation error in the neighborhood of the uniform distribution. Theoretical results are established including the ability of outlier removal and the guaranteed parameter convergence in the presence of outliers. Numerical algorithms are proposed and simulated, which support the theoretical derivations.

As the adoption for electric vehicles (EV) increases, the need for proper charging infrastructure also increases. As such, it is necessary to ensure proper charging infrastructure to meet the charging demand. Hence, studies concerning the planning of EV charging stations which include the sizing of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the station to reduce the peak demand on the grid. In this paper, EV charging stations were designed keeping in mind factors such as the EV charging load profile (on demand charging versus deferred charging), uncertainties in the load profile as well as the tariff rates. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out in order to examine the impact of several techno-economic parameters on the overall cost of the system.

We report the theoretical and experimental investigation of pentamer arrangements of nanoholes in a thin Au film arrayed over a large area. The pentamer arrangements support coupled plasmonic resonances localized to the nanoholes that exhibit a high near-field sensitivity and low polarization dependance. The structures are compelling for applications in biosensing and in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).

The downlink channel estimation is currently a critical bottleneck for IRS-assisted cell-free multiple input multiple output communication. Conventionally, most studies have employed deep learning methods to estimate the high-dimensional, complex cascaded channels generated by IRS, necessitating data collection from all users for centralized model training, which results in excessively large overheads, and data privacy problems. To tackle this challenge, a federated learning (FL)-based channel estimation framework incorporates coalition formation to guide the formation of FL user groups. We propose a coalition formation-enabled federated learning framework for channel estimation, utilizing a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach to intelligently group users into multiple coalitions, thereby improving channel estimation accuracy. Moreover, considering that nodes with similar distances to the base station and similar received signal power have a strong likelihood that they experience similar channel fading, we designed a transfer learning method that incorporates both received reference signal power and distance similarity metrics. The transfer learning technique is designed to accelerate the convergence of DRL-federated learning process. Simulations reveal that the proposed algorithms significantly reduce communication overhead for local users and improve data privacy while maintaining commendable channel estimation accuracy.

The replacement of conventional generating units with non-conventional renewable energy resources impacts the reliability of power systems. With high integration of renewable-based generation resources, there is a reduction in total system inertia, which could lead to systems with less time to react for frequency restoration in case of unexpected unit failures. Though several power system testbeds are available for studying and analysing different stability phenomena, none are suitable for characterizing, or analyzing low-inertia conditions. In this paper, a power system simulation environment is introduced for investigating control architectures for power grids, with special attention to the impact of high penetration of inverter-based generation resources (IBRs). The testbed is applied to the WSCC 9- bus test system, modified so that a range of IBR penetration levels can be analyzed (from zero to 80%). The testbed is suitable for studying both fast and slow electromechanical phenomena. A conclusion from numerical experiments is that high levels of IBRs do not necessarily result in low-inertia. This is due in part to the layers of control in the grid already in place to avoid frequency excursions.

This paper proposes a decentralized sliding mode control approach to the voltage regulation problem in a DC microgrid consisting of distributed generation units interconnected with each other through resistive-inductive power lines and supplying unknown nonlinear loads. In particular, the port-Hamiltonian structure of the system suggests the design of a suitable sliding manifold such that the system on this manifold exhibits desired passivity properties. This approach simplifies the control design and relaxes some restrictive assumptions required by other controllers proposed in the literature, while offering satisfactory performance.
