Data heterogeneity, privacy leakage challenges, the ineffectiveness of conventional collaborative learning techniques, and unresolved managing non-IID data distributions are some of the major obstacles to implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Federated learning (FL) frameworks frequently have trouble distinguishing between privacy protection and model accuracy, especially when used for delicate medical imaging applications. This study presents a novel framework that synergizes federated learning (FL) with edge computing to address these issues while safeguarding patient privacy. Our proposed Domain Adaptive Federated (DAD) learning approach effectively mitigates both inter-client and intra-client data heterogeneity, enabling collaborative model training across diverse medical imaging modalities (MRI, CT, PET) through cross-domain adaptation. Experimental evaluations on MRI brain segmentation datasets demonstrate the superior performance of DAD compared to traditional FL methods, as evidenced by significant improvements in F1-score (96.3), sensitivity (96.0), specificity (97.1), and AUC (96.7). This enhanced accuracy and robustness in handling heterogeneous and privacy-sensitive data render DAD an ideal candidate for privacy-preserving AI in consumer healthcare. By pioneering innovative strategies for collaborative model training and data privacy, this research contributes to the emerging field of edge intelligence, paving the way for improved patient outcomes while adhering to stringent confidentiality and ethical mandates.

Distributed Prescribed-Time Observer for Nonlinear systems

This paper proposes a distributed prescribed-time observer for nonlinear systems representable in a block-triangular observable canonical form. Using a weighted average of neighbor estimates exchanged over a strongly connected digraph, each observer estimates the system state despite limited local sensor measurements. The proposed design guarantees that distributed state estimation errors converge to zero at a user-specified convergence time, irrespective of observers’ initial conditions. To achieve this prescribed-time convergence, distributed observers implement time-varying local output injection gains that asymptotically approach infinity as the prescribed time is approached. Nonlinear Bandwidth and Bode Diagrams based on Scaled Relative Graphs

Scaled Relative Graphs (SRGs) provide a novel graphical frequency domain method for the analysis of nonlinear systems. In this paper, we use the restriction of the SRG to particular input spaces to compute frequency-dependent gain bounds for incrementally stable nonlinear systems. This leads to a nonlinear (NL) generalization of the Bode diagram, where the sinusoidal, harmonic, and subharmonic inputs are considered separately. When applied to the analysis of the NL loop transfer and sensitivity, we define a notion of bandwidth for both the open-loop and closed-loop, compatible with the LTI definitions. We illustrate the power of our method on the analysis of a DC motor with a parasitic nonlinearity, verifying our results in simulations. © 2025, CC BY.

In real-world datasets, leveraging the low-rank and sparsity properties enables developing efficient algorithms across a diverse array of data-related tasks, including compression, compressed sensing, matrix completion, etc. Notably, these two properties often coexist in certain real-world datasets, especially in Boolean datasets and quantized real-valued datasets. To harness the advantages of low-rank and sparsity simultaneously, we adopt a technique inspired by compressed sensing and Boolean matrix completion. Our approach entails compressing a low-rank sparse Boolean matrix by performing inner product operations with a randomly generated Boolean matrix. We then propose a decoding algorithms based on message-passing techniques to recover the original matrix. Our experiments demonstrate superior recovery performance of our proposed algorithms compared to Boolean matrix completion, with equal measurement requirements.

The downlink channel estimation is currently a critical bottleneck for IRS-assisted cell-free multiple input multiple output communication. Conventionally, most studies have employed deep learning methods to estimate the high-dimensional, complex cascaded channels generated by IRS, necessitating data collection from all users for centralized model training, which results in excessively large overheads, and data privacy problems. To tackle this challenge, a federated learning (FL)-based channel estimation framework incorporates coalition formation to guide the formation of FL user groups. We propose a coalition formation-enabled federated learning framework for channel estimation, utilizing a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach to intelligently group users into multiple coalitions, thereby improving channel estimation accuracy. Moreover, considering that nodes with similar distances to the base station and similar received signal power have a strong likelihood that they experience similar channel fading, we designed a transfer learning method that incorporates both received reference signal power and distance similarity metrics. The transfer learning technique is designed to accelerate the convergence of DRL-federated learning process. Simulations reveal that the proposed algorithms significantly reduce communication overhead for local users and improve data privacy while maintaining commendable channel estimation accuracy.

With the rapid advancement of data acquisition technologies, multiview data have been widely applied in fields such as social networks, computer vision, and natural language processing. Multiview data typically contain information arising from different views or sensors, offering more perspectives for observation. The multiview nature also brings challenges, such as high dimensionality, noise, heterogeneity, and redundancy. Particularly, in scenarios with limited labeled data, traditional single-view learning methods often struggle to handle these complex issues. To address this, this article proposes an unsupervised multiview learning framework that integrates Takagi–Sugeno–Kang fuzzy systems and graph-based adaptive regularization (MvTSK-GAR) to handle the heterogeneity and redundancy in multiview data effectively. Specifically, this article first captures the uncertainty in multiview data through fuzzy rules and models the structural relationships between the data using graph-based adaptive regularization. The framework does not rely on a large amount of labeled data. Instead, it integrates complementary information coming from different views to automatically mine latent patterns, thus generating more accurate and stable data representations. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework performs well in various real-world applications, particularly excelling in high-dimensional data processing and noise reduction. Nonlinear vibratory energy harvesters often exhibit multiple coexisting attractors, making their control challenging and energy-intensive. Ensuring an effective transition between these attractors while minimizing control effort is crucial for maximizing power generation and maintaining system stability. This paper introduces a differentiable data-driven control strategy that optimizes energy harvester performance by leveraging a neural network (NN)-based control framework. Unlike traditional fixed-gain or surrogate modeling approaches, the proposed method directly integrates system dynamics and control power consumption into the gain adaptation process, ensuring real-time adaptability. By exploiting the differentiability of neural networks, the controller employs gradient-based optimization to continuously refine control parameters in response to changes in operating conditions. The control framework consists of an offline training phase, where the neural network learns an energy-efficient control strategy through differentiable simulations. During this phase, the neural network is trained using a large dataset of system responses to different control inputs, allowing it to learn the most energy-efficient control strategy. This trained network is then used in the online deployment phase, where the trained controller dynamically adjusts control parameters in real-time. The proposed approach minimizes control energy consumption and efficiently guides the system toward the high-energy attractor, avoiding unnecessary control effort. Our approach significantly outperforms conventional PID-based sliding mode controllers. Simulation results confirm that the differentiable controller considerably enhances energy harvesting efficiency and reduces chattering, ensuring a smooth transition to the high-energy orbit while maintaining robust system stability. In this paper we deal with stochastic optimization problems where the data distributions change in response to the decision variables. Traditionally, the study of optimization problems with decision-dependent distributions has assumed either the absence of constraints or fixed constraints. This work considers a more general setting where the constraints can also dynamically adjust in response to changes in the decision variables. Specifically, we consider linear constraints and analyze the effect of decision-dependent distributions in both the objective function and constraints. Firstly, we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a constrained equilibrium point, at which the distributions remain invariant under retraining. Moreover, we propose and analyze two algorithms: repeated constrained optimization and repeated dual ascent. For each algorithm, we provide sufficient conditions for convergence to the constrained equilibrium point. Furthermore, we explore the relationship between the equilibrium point and the optimal point for the constrained decision-dependent optimization problem. Notably, our results encompass previous findings as special cases when the constraints remain fixed. To show the effectiveness of our theoretical analysis, we provide numerical experiments on both a market problem and a dynamic pricing problem for parking based on real-world data. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Analyzing multi-modal medical data in the setting of uncertain healthcare situations continues to be a major topic in medical image analysis and healthcare big data. Traditional machine learning algorithms are severely hampered by inaccurate data fusion, a lack of adaptability to changing patient data, and challenges managing uncertainty. These difficulties are made worse by complicated medical images and diverse data sources, which results in less accurate diagnosis and worse-than-ideal healthcare choices. To tackle these urgent problems, this paper suggests two new approaches: Continual Learning using Progressive Neural Networks (PNNs) and Tensorized Attention Mechanism for Data Fusion. The Tensorized Attention Mechanism improves multi-modal data fusion by using dynamic, task-specific attention to improve feature alignment across modalities, and the PNNs framework uses continual learning, memory augmentation, and domain adaptation to ensure robust learning under data uncertainty. We test these methods on a variety of multi-modal datasets, such as MIMIC-IV, CheXpert, MOST, OAI, and Heart Murmur, which offer a comprehensive representation of medical data from clinical reports, chest X-rays, heart murmurs, and other heterogeneous data sources. Our experimental results show notable improvements in diagnostic performance, with notable results like a CFI of 0.10, a KR score of 90.4%, and an MMC score of 0.097, indicating superior generalization and robustness across domains. Healthcare AI applications could be revolutionized by the use of specialized losses, such as Conditional Variational Autoencoder (CVAE), Adversarial Contrastive Learning (ACL), Reciprocal Regularization, and domain adaptation losses, which are essential for preventing forgetting and guaranteeing learning stability across shifting data streams. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Understanding the biophysical properties of cells is essential for biological research, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Microfluidics enhances biophysical cell characterization by enabling precise manipulation and real-time measurement at the microscale. However, the high-throughput nature of microfluidic systems generates vast amounts of data, complicating analysis. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) methods, including machine learning and deep learning, with microfluidic technologies addresses these challenges. AI excels at analyzing large, complex datasets, improving the accuracy and efficiency of microfluidic experiments and facilitating new biological discoveries. This review examines the synergy between microfluidics and machine learning for biophysical cell characterization, categorizing existing methods based on the types of input data used for machine learning analysis, highlighting recent advancements, and discussing challenges and future directions in this interdisciplinary field.
