Automated visual inspection of on- and off-shorewind turbines using aerial robots provides several benefits, namely, a safe working environment by circumventing the need for workers to be suspended high above the ground, reduced inspection time, preventive maintenance, and access to hard-to-reach areas. A novel nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) framework alongside a global wind turbine path planner is proposed to achieve distance-optimal coverage for wind turbine inspection. Unlike traditional MPC formulations, visual tracking NMPC (VT-NMPC) is designed to track an inspection surface, instead of a position and heading trajectory, thereby circumventing the need to provide an accurate predefined trajectory for the drone. An additional capability of the proposed VT-NMPC method is that by incorporating inspection requirements as visual tracking costs to minimize, it naturally achieves the inspection task successfully while respecting the physical constraints of the drone. Multiple simulation runs and real-world tests demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of the proposed automated inspection framework, which outperforms the traditional MPC designs, by providing full coverage of the target wind turbine blades as well as its robustness to changing wind conditions. The method [K]control of Adaptive Multiple-timescale systems (KAMS) has been used as a method of adaptive control for systems with states that evolve at vastly different rates and with uncertain parameters. Prior research on KAMS has shown a relationship between the asymptotic behavior of the reference models and the behavior of the full-order closed-loop system. Poor reference model design can cause steady-state error or instability even if that reference model is acceptable in a single timescale context, due to adverse feedback between the reference models and the fast-state manifold. This paper simplifies KAMS control design and provides insight into multiple timescale reference models by identifying design considerations for the fast and slow reference models. For fast reference models, it is shown that the stability proofs used in KAMS control design necessarily require the manifold to be an asymptotically stable equilibrium of the fast reference model, despite prior work that allowed other possibilities. In the case of a slow reference model that is not asymptotically stable to its reference signal, it is common for the inner connection conditions to be dependent on the reference signal. This can cause the interconnection conditions to be ill-formatted for the application of the stability proofs used in KAMS control design. This paper addresses that case and proposes the use of Raffoul’s condition as a method to prove stability in the sense of Lyapunov. A linear quadrotor attitude stabilization problem is used as a framework for the slow reference model analysis. Results presented in the paper show that 1) the asymptotic stability of the fast reference model is a necessary condition for the KAMS stability proofs used in prior work and 2) Raffoul’s condition is a sufficient condition for Lyapunov sense stability even when the inner connection conditions are ill-formatted for the KAMS stability proofs used in prior work. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics

Equilibrium-Independent control of Continuous-Time Nonlinear systems Via the LPV Framework

In this paper, we consider the analysis and control of continuous-time nonlinear systems to ensure universal shifted stability and performance, i.e., stability and performance w.r.t. each forced equilibrium point of the system. This "equilibrium-free"concept is especially beneficial for control problems that require the tracking of setpoints and rejection of persistent disturbances, such as input loads. In this paper, we show how the velocity form, i.e., the time-differentiated dynamics of the system, plays a crucial role in characterizing these properties and how the analysis of it can be solved by the application of Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) methods in a computationally efficient manner. Furthermore, by leveraging the properties of the velocity form and the LPV framework, a novel controller synthesis method is presented which ensures closed-loop universal shifted stability and performance. The proposed controller design is verified experimentally on a real system. Additionally, we compare the proposed method to a standard LPV control design, demonstrating the improved stability and performance guarantees of the new approach. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

We are currently in a period of upheaval, as many new technologies are emerging that open up new possibilities to shape our everyday lives. Particularly, within the field of Personalized Human-computer Interaction we observe high potential, but also challenges. In this article, we explore how an increasing amount of online services and tools not only further facilitates our lives, but also shapes our lives and how we perceive our environments. Fractional-order binary bat algorithm for feature selection on high-dimensional microarray data

High-dimensional microarray data suffer from the confounding effects of irrelevant, redundant and noisy genes on the scalability and efficiency of classification algorithms. In order for an effective dimensionality reduction and the selection of informative genes, this paper introduces a novel approach using fractional calculus concepts. This study proposes a modified version of binary the bat algorithm named fractional-order binary bat algorithm (FBBA) able to control the convergence process using more historical memory of bat behaviors. The gene selection technique contains a two-stage hybrid filter/wrapper method which employs a new correlation-based feature clustering (CFC) algorithm in the filter stage and the FBBA in the wrapper stage. The CFC-FBBA is evaluated on ten microarray gene expression datasets by employing the support vector machine classifier with a k-fold Monte Carlo cross validation data partitioning model. Furthermore, the results show that the CFC-FBBA, while minimizing the size of the gene subset, achieves the highest classification accuracy in most cases compared to several state-of-art hybrid techniques. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Integrating data-informativity conditions in predictor models for single module identification in dynamic networks

For consistent identification of a target module in a dynamic network with the local direct method, basically two prime conditions need to be satisfied: (a) a set of structural conditions on the choice of the predictor model, i.e. a set of input and output node variables, and (b) conditions on data-informativity. While for conditions (a) constructive algorithms for node selection have been presented that appropriately guarantee that the identified object can indeed reveal the target module, the requirements for satisfying (b) have not yet been integrated fully. In this paper, we will present simplified path-based results for generic data-informativity, and show how they can be integrated in constructive algorithms for predictor model selection that provide consistent target module estimates. It is shown that data-informativity not only requires a sufficient number of external excitation signals to be present in the network, but also puts restrictions on the structure of the predictor model, i.e. the selection of input and output node variables. Some examples are presented to illustrate the new results.

Geomagnetic disturbances are a threat to the reliability and security of our national critical energy infrastructures. These events specifically result in geomagnetically induced currents, which can cause damage to transformers due to magnetic saturation. In order to mitigate these effects, blocker devices must be placed in optimal locations. Finding this placement requires a dc representation of the ac transmission lines, which this paper discusses. Different decisions in this process, including the method of representing the blocking devices, result in significant variations to the power loss calculations. To analyze these effects, we conclude the paper by comparing the losses on a sample network with different modeling implementations. © 2025 IEEE.

Distributed Nash equilibrium for pursuit-evasion game with one evader and multiple pursuers

This paper investigates the pursuit-evasion problem involving one evader and multiple pursuers with limited sensing capability, where the evader tries to maximize the distance with the pursuers, while the pursuers have different objectives based on whether they can receive the information of the evader. The subgroup of pursuers who can observe the evader(called leaders) tries to be close to the evader, and the other subgroup of pursuers(called followers) tries to synchronize with their neighbors. When the subgraph formed by all leaders is complete, sufficient conditions are given to guarantee that the pursuers capture the evader and the pursuit-evasion game composed of the evader and leaders reaches Nash equilibrium. Furthermore, for the incomplete subgraph case, the distributed observers are proposed to estimate the relative positions between the evader and all leaders. It is shown that the distributed control strategy based on the observers converges exponentially to the Nash equilibrium solution, and makes the pursuers capture the evader. Finally, simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.

Convex Equilibrium-Free Stability and Performance Analysis of Discrete-Time Nonlinear systems

This paper considers the equilibrium-free stability and performance analysis of discrete-time nonlinear systems. We consider two types of equilibrium-free notions. Namely, the universal shifted concept, which considers stability and performance w.r.t. all equilibrium points of the system, and the incremental concept, which considers stability and performance between trajectories of the system. In this paper, we show how universal shifted stability and performance of discrete-time systems can be analyzed by making use of the time-difference dynamics. Moreover, we extend the existing results for incremental dissipativity for discrete-time systems based on dissipativity analysis of the differential dynamics to more general state-dependent storage functions for less conservative results. Finally, we show how both these equilibrium-free notions can be cast as a convex analysis problem by making use of the linear parameter-varying framework, which is also demonstrated by means of an example.
