In this paper we propose an original model, describing a coevolution of ties and opinions in large-scale social networks. The model is a system of determined differential equations for the mean values of some network parameters. Aggregation of opinion and ties dynamics performed under configuration model assumptions.

An intrinsic approach to formation control of regular polyhedra for reduced attitudes

This paper addresses formation control of reduced attitudes in which a continuous control protocol is proposed for achieving and stabilizing all regular polyhedra (also known as Platonic solids) under a unified framework. The protocol contains only relative reduced attitude measurements and does not depend on any particular parametrization as is usually used in the literature. A key feature of the control proposed is that it is intrinsic in the sense that it does not need to incorporate any information of the desired formation. Instead, the achieved formation pattern is totally attributed to the geometric properties of the space and the designed inter-agent connection topology. Using a novel coordinates transformation, asymptotic stability of the desired formations is proven by studying stability of a constrained nonlinear system. In addition, a methodology to investigate stability of such constrained systems is also presented. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A procedure for global optimization of PID type controller parameters for SISO plants with model uncertainty is presented. Robustness to the uncertainties is guaranteed by the use of Horowitz bounds, which are used as constraints when low frequency performance is optimized. The basic idea of both the optimization and the parameter tuning is to formulate separate criteria for low, mid and high frequency closed loop properties. The trade-off between stability margins, high frequency robustness and low frequency performance is then elucidated and, hence, the final choice of parameters is facilitated. The optimization problems are non-convex and ill-conditioned and we use a combination of new global and standard local optimization algorithms available in the TOMLAB optimization environment to solve the problem. The method does not rely on a good initial guess and converges fast and robustly. It is applied to a controller structure comparison for a plant with an uncertain mechanical resonance. For a given control activity and stability margin as well as identical tuning parameters it is shown that a PID controller achieves slightly improved low frequency performance compared to an ℋ ∞ controller based on loop-shaping. The reason for this somewhat surprising result is the roll-off in the ℋ ∞ controller, which adds additional high frequency robustness compared to the PID controller. Computationally, a factor of 10–20 has been gained compared to an earlier, less general, version of the procedure.

Approximating flexibility in distributed energy resources: A geometric approach

With increasing availability of communication and control infrastructure at the distribution systems, it is expected that the distributed energy resources (DERs) will take an active part in future power systems operations. One of the main challenges associated with integration of DERs in grid planning and control is in estimating the available flexibility in a collection of (heterogeneous) DERs, each of which may have local constraints that vary over time. In this work, we present a geometric approach for approximating the flexibility of a DER in modulating its active and reactive power consumption. The proposed method is agnostic about the type and model of the DERs, thereby facilitating a plug-and-play approach, and allows scalable aggregation of the flexibility of a collection of (heterogeneous) DERs at the distributed system level. Intrinsic reduced attitude formation with ring inter-agent graph

This paper investigates the reduced attitude formation control problem for a group of rigid-body agents using feedback based on relative attitude information. Under both undirected and directed cycle graph topologies, it is shown that reversing the sign of a classic consensus protocol yields asymptotical convergence to formations whose shape depends on the parity of the group size. Specifically, in the case of even parity the reduced attitudes converge asymptotically to a pair of antipodal points and distribute equidistantly on a great circle in the case of odd parity. Moreover, when the inter-agent graph is an undirected ring, the desired formation is shown to be achieved from almost all initial states. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper we discuss the estimation of a moving target by cooperative agents equipped with sensors. To locate a moving target, a distributed algorithm is given for the networked agents based on a time-based shift. A nonlinear filter with fusing collected sensor information is proposed to estimate the trajectory of the target with unknown dynamics. The convergence of the estimation in the sensor network is analyzed and proved via a theoretic approach.

This paper investigates synchronization of dynamical networks with both system delay and transmission delay by applying pinning impulsive control. Based on the comparison theorem and the theory of impulsive functional differential equations, some novel criteria are obtained, from which the proportion of pinned nodes is able to be determined. A numerical example is given to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

This paper proposes a supervisory control structure for networked systems with time-varying delays. The control structure, in which a supervisor triggers the most appropriate controller from a multi-controller unit, aims at improving the closed-loop performance relative to what can be obtained using a single robust controller. Our analysis considers average dwell-time switching and is based on a novel multiple Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional. We develop analysis conditions that can be verified by semi-definite programming, and show that associated state feedback synthesis problem also can be solved using convex optimization. Small and large scale networked control systems are used to illustrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Achieving global carbon neutrality within the first half of this century is required to limit the increase of global average temperature to 1.5oC, and thus to mitigate the effects of the ongoing climate crisis. Due to this, several countries have laid out decarbonization plans for the next few decades. In particular, a decarbonization schedule has been recently announced for the Chilean electric power system, which aims to entirely phase out coal generation by 2040. This implies a major change on the operational features and flexibility requirements of such system since coal still occupies a very large energy share of about 40%. This paper presents an assessment of various decarbonization pathways for the Chilean power system based on a generation and transmission expansion planning model specially enhanced to capture key flexibility aspects. This model employs the concept of representative days, an approximation of the unit commitment problem, a thorough modelling of the hydro network, and also thermal-based and battery-based energy storage. The results show that more strict decarbonization goals remain in a similar cost range as compared to the base case scenario, and for such scenarios the balance between variable and flexible attributes, including ramping, storage, and transmission capacity, becomes critical in earlier stages of the planning horizon. Based on this, a policy recommendation from this paper is that appropriate operational methods and market structures must be implemented to harness all the benefits of renewable and flexible energy in a reliable, sustainable and efficient way. © 2019.
