This work investigates the solution of Mixed-Integer Optimal control Problems (MIOCPs) for an existing residential heating network. The network consists of several buildings that are interconnected through a district heating network and a biomethane combined heat and power (CHP) plant. All buildings have access to decentralized heat generation, in the form of solar thermal collectors on the rooftops of the buildings. Buildings with surplus heat are intended to transfer heat to buildings with heating demands in order to prevent the activation of the CHP plant. Additional storage provide further flexibility for storage and utilization of heat. Binary variables represent the exchange relations between buildings and the CHP plant. For this system, we solve an MIOCP in two different ways. On the one hand, we keep the system related nonlinearities and apply the Combinatorial Integral Approximation (CIA) method to the arising Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Program (MINLP). On the other hand, we apply a linear reformulation yielding a Mixed-Integer Linear Program (MILP), which we solve using a standard MILP solver. We show that the MINLP approach has a computational advantage over the MILP approach, while yielding only slightly worse results in the single-digit percentage range for selected key figures.

This Letter investigates synchronization of two nonidentical Lur'e systems with time-varying delay and parameter mismatches via impulsive control. Based on the theory of impulsive functional differential equations, sufficient conditions for impulsive synchronization with a bound on the synchronization error are derived. An illustrative example is provided to validate the proposed method.

With increasing availability of communication and control infrastructure at the distribution systems, it is expected that the distributed energy resources (DERs) will take an active part in future power systems operations. One of the main challenges associated with integration of DERs in grid planning and control is in estimating the available flexibility in a collection of (heterogeneous) DERs, each of which may have local constraints that vary over time. In this work, we present a geometric approach for approximating the flexibility of a DER in modulating its active and reactive power consumption. The proposed method is agnostic about the type and model of the DERs, thereby facilitating a plug-and-play approach, and allows scalable aggregation of the flexibility of a collection of (heterogeneous) DERs at the distributed system level. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

Here the energy-efficiency performance of CO2 capture is investigated based on bench-scale continuous absorption-desorption system. A comprehensive evaluation is performed by L25(65) orthogonal tests to analyze the effects of operating conditions on CO2 capture. With combination of Eulerian-Eulerian method with the population balance model, we predict the dynamics evolution process of dispersed bubble, in order to provide the detailed information of interphase contact area and multiphase flow for modelling complete mass transfer parameters. Meanwhile, rigorous process simulation is developed to analyze the energy consumption of carbon capture. Experiments reveal desorption temperature and flue gas flow play a major role for CO2 capture efficiency. Rising flue gas flow could promote interfacial area, but decreases contact time, overally, net CO2 flow approximately determines the linear relationship of capture efficiency and absorption rate. Higher desorption temperature provides leaner solvent to drive CO2 absorption, but consumes greater energy penalty for CO2 capture. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we investigate the simultaneous state and unknown input (SUI) filtering issue for a class of multi-sensor networked systems (MSNSs). The unknown input with no prior knowledge is introduced in the system state and output. The focus of this paper is to design the local filters with regard to the SUI, which can yield that the local upper bounds of the filtering error covariance for the SUI are derived at each instant. Moreover, the local filter gains of the SUI are designed such that the obtained upper bounds can be minimized. Finally, the proposed joint SUI algorithm is verified by using the simulation example.

Differential evolution (DE) is a simple but powerful evolutionary algorithm, which has been widely and successfully used in many areas. In this paper, an impulsive control method is introduced to the DE framework, and the impulsive DE (IpDE) is proposed for improving the performance of DE. The impulsive control operation instantly moves the individuals which do not update for continuous pre-defined generations to a desired state based on the individuals with better fitness values in the current population. This way, IpDE controls individuals' positions in the space domain according to the stagnation status of the population. In order to validate the effectiveness of IpDE, the presented framework is applied to the original DE algorithms, as well as several state-of-the-art DE variants. Experimental results exhibit that IpDE is a simple but effective framework to improve the performance of the studied DE algorithms.

Tunnel moving target detection is subject to the influence of light condition and motion blur, the traditional motion detection method based on pixel points can not be very good at segmenting moving target. To solve this problem, frame difference detection method based on local structure of image and gray level information is proposed. The local mean difference information of the image is calculated by the improved algorithm, and then the similarity measure function and the gray scale measure function are constructed. The similarity measure function effectively describes the structural features of moving objects, and reduces the influence of image background information. The gray scale function is better to highlight the contrast of the target brightness, to increase the division of the target area and the background parts, and to realize the moving target detection correctly. The experimental results show that the detection method of the fusion structure and the gray level information can effectively segment the moving object.

This study appears an unprecedented phenomenon that 1O2, generated in urea-modulated LaFeO3 (U-LaFeO3) perovskite heterogeneous Fenton system, is superior to OH• and O2•- in NO removal. The 2.5U-LaFeO3/H2O2 system can remove 82.9% of NO, with a low H2O2/NO molar ratio (4.7) and high GHSV (30,800 h-1), along with good environmental adaptability and reusability. Urea modulation induced the formations of abundant La defects, O vacancies and Fe(IV), also improved the pore structure and surface area. The contribution order of different free radicals to NO removal is 1O2 > O2•- > •OH. Characterization combined with theoretical calculation clarify that (i) H2O2 is inclined to derive HO2• on Fe sites;(ii) 1O2 is mainly generated from O2•- reaction with Fe(IV)/Fe(III);(iii) •OH is mainly produced by splitting of H2O2 on Fe site and decomposition of HO2• on OV site. The main denitrification paths are NO+1O2→NO2, NO2+•OH→NO3- and NO+•OH→NO2-. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Biochar Doped Carbon Nitride to Enhance the Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution: Synergy of Nitrogen Vacancies and Bridging Carbon Structure and First-Principles Calculation

Enhancing the separation and transfer of photogenerated carries is vital for improving the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). Herein, a carbon-rich g-C3N4 with nitrogen vacancies (CCN4) was constructed by incorporating the biochar into g-C3N4 during a thermal polymerization in N2 atmosphere. The doped carbon atoms replaced the bridged nitrogen and increased the delocalization π states. The synergy of the enhanced π states and nitrogen vacancy favored to narrow the bandgap and accelerate the charge separation and migration in catalyst. Meanwhile, the CCN4 catalyst had a favorable kinetics for HER with simpler steps and lower energy barrier than the PCN sample in which H2 production from *H is prior to OH generation. The CCN4 catalyst exhibited excellent HER activity with a hydrogen evolution rate of 3342 μmol·g-1·h-1 with 0.5wt% cocatalyst Pt, which was 5.06 times higher than that of pristine g-C3N4 (PCN). Additionally, CCN4 exhibited good resistance to salt with the concentration near natural seawater, showing the further improved hydrogen evolution rate of 3809 μmol·g-1·h-1. The findings reported in this work shed light on a biochar-tailored protocol to control the defects of g-C3N4 and optimize its intrinsic electronic properties and photocatalytic HER. © 2023, The Authors. Cation-Deficient Mn-Co Spinel Catalyst Towards Activation of Peroxymonosulfate for Deep Mineralization of Toluene: The Key Roles of So4•- and O2•- in the Ring-Opening and Mineralization of Toluene

Developing novel method that can deeply mineralize low concentration volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under ambient temperature is still a challenge. This study fabricates a cation-deficient Mn-Co bimetallic spinel catalyst, MnCo2O4.5, which exhibits excellent activity towards peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and superior to other similar advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in mineralization of toluene. The crystalline phase, microstructure and composition of the catalyst were revealed by a series of characterization methods. The MnCo2O4.5/PMS system can stably remove 97.3% of toluene over 25 h with less PMS dosage, and the CO2 selectivity reaches 85.3%, its CO2 yield is 2.8 and 6.4 times as many as those of Co3O4 and MnO. MnCo2O4.5 also exhibits a good pH adaptivity (pH=3-7) and highly chemical stable in acidic conditions, with low metals leaching rate and excellent reusability. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical quenching tests reveal the radicals’ contributions to the conversion and mineralization of toluene, i.e. SO4•- > O2•- > HO• > 1O2 and O2•- > 1O2 > HO• > SO4•-, respectively. Combined the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses and quantum chemical calculation, the toluene degradation routes induced by HO• and SO4•- were detailedly summarized. This novel mild method provides a new thought on the development of low-temperature VOCs control technologies. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
