The Truncated Cone Effect in AFM Nanoindentation on Soft Materials

Background: Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) nanoindentation is the principal method for the characterization of soft materials at the nanoscale. In most cases, pyramidal tips are used and approximated to perfect cones. However, the extended use of the AFM tip may alter its sharp-ness. Objective: In many cases, a truncated cone shape is appropriate for tip modeling. In this technical note, the equation that relates the force with the indentation depth when indenting an elastic half-space using a truncated cone is derived. Methods: The nanoindentation equation for a truncated cone tip is derived using the fundamental differential equation that relates the sample’s contact stiffness with Young’s modulus. Results: When fitting Sneddon’s equation (which is valid for a perfect cone) on data obtained using a truncated cone-shaped AFM tip, the results show a ‘pseudo-softening’ behavior. Conclusion: The AFM tip's sharpness in nanoindentation experiments is a crucial parameter for obtaining the correct mechanical patterns of unknown samples. © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

Outage work planning has been essential to maintain the power grid system. For the operators, the planning is troublesome. It is caused by too complex process. The past few years, we have been developing Outage Work planning Collaboration System (OWCS) with some mathematical optimization techniques. The article discusses the challenges related to voltage and power management in automated intelligent photovoltaic (PV) systems. It suggests that Fractional Order Proportional Integral Derivative (FOPID) controllers can help address these challenges effectively. The research aims to create a highly adaptable and precise automated intelligent PV system that focuses on managing voltage and power issues. It introduces a novel approach using the Black Hole Optimization (BHO) algorithm and leverages the advantages of FOPID controllers for automation. The study also considers thermal models for batteries within the automated intelligent PV system and explores different options to handle voltage and power issues stemming from PV panels. It involves fine-tuning 15 parameters using the BHO algorithm and concludes that one configuration (Instance 1) is preferable due to its superior accuracy and scalability. This choice is supported by objective validation. Internet of Things connectivity in home health monitoring is a high-in-demand application area. The electronics industry and procedural researchers seek high-end, secured, on-time, cost-effective ways to build reliable quality of service (QoS) proved autonomous systems using existing wireless techniques. Also, the continuous availability of a traffic-free gateway, particularly in isolated places, is necessary for large-scale data gathering and real-time data update processes to function the sensor nodes in an Internet of Things (IoT) network. Improved Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) is one of the most desirable networks offered by 6th generation (6G) connectivity in IoT-associated remote-monitoring proceedings. In this article, we propose a QoS-aware narrow bandwidth allocation-based prototype model for healthcare monitoring in long-distance high-speed trains during the patient transfer from home to the healthcare center or vice versa. This article demonstrates a possible enhancement in social aspects of cognitive IoT applications with large data systems in industrial informatics. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Pumps find many industrial applications in converting electrical to mechanical energy necessary for fluid transfer. In this study, numerical analysis of the pump impeller produced via the Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) was carried out in the complete ABAQUS environment (CAE/2020). This led to the determination of the stress, strain and deformation distribution induced on the modelled impeller under the operating conditions using the von Mises failure criterion. For the purpose of this study, the static general and steady state heat transfer steps were employed sequentially. The impeller's model as casted in the FDM process was designed as a single solid homogenous part with no nodal separations or assembly constraints between the base of the impeller and its blades. Using a mesh interval of 0.5 mm, it was observed that the computational time decreases with an increase in the mesh size up to 5.0 mm. The results obtained showed that blade thicknesses less than 5 mm are more susceptibility to failure. In addition, extreme operating speeds up to 1000 rad/s and pressures of 0.22 MPa are not suitable conditions for high operational efficiency and structural integrity of the impeller. The findings of this work provides an insight into the design of pump impeller using the FDM with improved design accuracy and cycle time. © 2023 IEEE.

The demand for energy conservation has led to a need for higher efficiency in the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system, including the inverter. To date, studies have focused on the trade-off between inverter switching losses and motor copper and iron losses. Focusing on the recent development of power semiconductor devices, higher breakdown voltages, and lower losses have been realized. Therefore, in this trade-off relationship in the future, increasing the switching frequency and reducing motor losses are expected to lead to higher efficiency of the PMSM drive system. In this study, PMSM drive system losses were measured and analyzed in a system of a 1 kW PMSM and insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) inverter when driven in the asynchronous pulse width modulation (PWM) carrier frequency of 10 kHz and the synchronous PWM 3-pulse mode. The results reveal that effectively reducing motor losses by increasing the switching frequency is more effective for the efficiency of the PMSM drive system than reducing inverter losses by decreasing the switching frequency. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, a work procedure developed to support the collaboration and progress in the research project IDEAL - Integrated product and production platforms supporting agile and demand-driven industrial product realisation - is presented and its functionality discussed. The research project involved in total 13 researchers, five manufacturing companies and one software supplier. The research project was organised in four sub-projects, covering various aspects of a joint research question. The project started in April 2020 and ended in January 2024. The work procedure, called the ´IDEAL work proceduré, was developed based on the overall principles from interactive research combined with the framework for design research methodology (DRM). The developed work procedure provided a structure for the project, connecting the four subprojects, and thereby supported fulfilment of the joint research question. During the research project, the functionality of the ´IDEAL work proceduré has been assessed in different ways, both in terms of how it was perceived and to what extent the planned results have been achieved. During the project we have carried out workshops to follow-up on the progress and the work procedure. In addition, follow-up interviews have been conducted with participants from involved companies. The results from the different assessment activities are synthesised and presented in this paper. To expand the applicability of the ´IDEAL work proceduré, the potential of the procedure to support transdisciplinary research is elaborated on in this paper. © 2024 The Authors.

The Swedish environmental assessment certification system, Miljöbyggnad, rewards lower energy use in comparison to that of building regulations, related to total heated floor area. Previous studies suggest that this indicator shows the efficiency of the technical design of the building;not how well the building is utilized. Thus, a more suitable quantity/unit can be the one that takes into account the extent of how the building is used in a more efficient and sustainable way. The aim of this paper is to discuss if current energy units are sustainable enough to assess efficient use of buildings and investigate how indicators can affect the grades and criteria of a certification system. Achieving the targets of the Paris Agreement as an international treaty on climate change requires global climate actions by all sectors, including ensuring that buildings are more energy efficient. Today’s modern buildings employ a worldwide well-known and versatile usable building material which is a new type of green low-carbon engineered wood product, cross-laminated timber (CLT), for their structural frames. CLT as an innovative plate-shaped product provides a laminated structure and great physicomechanical characteristics. This article studies the development status and implementation of CLT in Europe, emphasizing its material properties and load-bearing characteristics. The newest findings related to CLT are reported. Also, the environmental benefits of using CLT in the construction industry are discussed. Moreover, the energy performance and performance of the utilized CLT elements are highlighted. According to our findings, the embodied energy and embodied carbon are significantly lower in CLT constructions compared with reinforced concrete and steel structures. The implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) can enhance the operational efficiency of the telecommunication industry including the mobile network operational centres (NOC). This study employs a systematic literature review (SLR) to probe the impact of TQM on telecommunications and network operations centres (NOC) in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. Literature is reviewed using keywords and relevant articles are selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria and a total of 50 articles were reviewed after the implementation of the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Thereafter, a TQM framework is developed for the NOC department, focusing on fault management of 5G transmission faults. This helps gain insights into TQM in a telecommunication NOC. It reveals what TQM tools, principles and methods that can be incorporated in the NOC for fault management of 5G transmission faults. © 2024 IEEE.
