Multi-Objective Model Selection for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Automatic Target Recognition systems

Within unmanned aerial vehicles on-going research topics, automatic target recognition is acquiring relevance. This is due to the easiness with which it is possible to acquire such devices. In order to do this, signal processing and classification techniques could be adopted. Also, in order to improve the classification ratio, optimization techniques could be used. This subject is object of study for many researchers, but the authors worry about the lack of information while using single-objective optimization techniques. The proposed work comprises the application of multi-objective optimization design in order to create an automatic target recognition system to discriminate different types of unmanned aerial vehicles. In order to accomplish this, a K-band radar system is used to send and receive electromagnetic signals, which are then processed with feature extraction techniques, and finally, applied on an artificial neural network system. In order to improve the system's classification ratio, the classifier is defined as a multi-objective problem, and evolutionary multi-objective optimization techniques are applied. Finally, in order to select the best possible trade-off, the level diagrams multi-criteria decision making methodology is used to compare different solutions. © 2017

Organizations are influenced by external demands which can be represented by changes on the markets organizations are part of. Companies are operating on a new context, where the importance of sustainability has been highlighted by events such as environmental problems, social responsibility issues and quality assurance of products and services. Those aspects are represented by the areas of the Triple Bottom-Line (3BL), which treat organizations operational performance on economic, environmental and social aspects. However, organizations are still trying to develop new performance measurement systems, which relate to the 3BL and that can be used for sustainable performance assessment and benchmarking. In order to address this need, this research aims to develop a process that enables standards and guidelines to be used as tools for the establishment of a performance measurement system which can address the needs of integrated management on behalf of sustainability aspects. The method used on the development of this article is based on concepts of the Process Approach methodology from Cambridge University, as well as Business Process Management Notation to represent processes for performance assessment. Those processes were built with a high emphasis on Performance Assessment frameworks and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) theories. The processes generated have been applied in a project of innovation in sustainable management, in which its application enabled to work with requirements from various standards and guidelines in a practical context, through the usage of indicators and performance measurement. Exemplifying the application of this process, the article will aim to clarify the usage of indicators based on standards and guidelines as a tool for sustainability assessment, through an integrated management of an organization set of standards and guidelines.

Industry 4.0 is creating a radically more dynamic work environment, which calls for considerable changes in the role of industry professionals. As industries need to respond to evolving trends quickly, as well professionals need to be able to work and constantly learning in this new work environment. Besides, due to the continuous advances in technology and the adoption of these technologies in the industries processes, the level of complexity in the workplace is increasing, which results in the need for a new professional role. However, the main challenge is how to prepare and qualify these professionals to acquire these competences. In order to provide a better understanding of the new professional role and their relationship with the industry 4.0 working environment, this paper introduces an ontology for Competence Management in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Considering the recent scientific and business developments for preparing the industries and workers for this new working era, competences and skills needed for professionals in industry 4.0 were reviewed, as well as challenges and opportunities. Based on a systematic literature review in scientific sources and grey literature, this work identified what technologies are being adopted and what the professional competences are for working in this working environment. Since Industry 4.0 is spreading all over the world, this study contributes to this understanding and also provides a starting point for further research regarding workforce competence management for Industry 4.0. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Based on the swarm intelligence theory, this paper discusses the use of PSO approaches using an operator and based on the Gaussian probability distribution function as a population space of a cultural algorithm, called cultural Gaussian PSO (GPSO-CA). Cultural algorithms are mechanisms that incorporate domain knowledge obtained during the evolutionary process, which increase the efficiency of the search process. These approaches are employed in a well-studied continuous optimization problem of mechanical engineering design. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper addresses the problem of input-to-state stability (ISS) and stabilization of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) coupled with a system of homogeneous linear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) through the boundaries. First, a Lyapunov result characterizing the ISS property for finite-dimensional systems is extended to deal with coupled ODE and PDE systems. The proposed ISS condition is then applied to derive stability and stabilization conditions in terms of linear matrix inequality constraints assuming magnitude bounded disturbances at the boundaries. Two convex optimization problems are also proposed in order to obtain either an optimized reachable set estimate or a boundary controller that minimizes the disturbance effects on the L2 × R-norm of the system states. Numerical examples illustrate the potential of the proposed approach. © 2024 IEEE.

The predicted dramatic increase in demand for IT workers in the next decade suggests an opportunity for IT educators to establish plans to ramp up to meet these needs. The purpose of this paper is to help educators understand factors that are important to IT workers and that can be influenced by the educational process. The work reported here is part of an NSF grant that explored current IT worker experiences and motivations. Data for the study was collected using a forty-four-item questionnaire sent to currently employed IT workers in the Boston area. Stepwise multiple linear regression was used to relate certain outcome variables to attributes and opinions of the respondents as represented by question item responses. Relationships have been discovered that will help educators craft academic programs and identify potentially successful students in IT. For example, the analysis indicates questionnaire items associated with the challenge presented by an IT profession and family educational backgrounds in technical areas are important outcome predictors, while gender and age are less important.

The humans have the natural ability of following objects with the head and eyes and identify the relationship between those objects. This daily activity represents a challenge for computer vision systems. The procedure to identify the relationship between human eye gaze and the trackable objects is complex and demands several details. In this current paper we proposed a review of the main gazing following methods, identified the respective performance of them and also proposed an AI based method to estimate the gaze from 2D images based on head pose estimation. The main important details to be recovered from images are scene depth, head position and alignment and ocular rotation. In this approach we perform a track estimation of the gaze direction without the use of the eye position, and also, the face partial occlusion is considered in the analysis. The proposed approach allows low cost in processing with considerable accuracy at low complexity sceneries, because we don’t need to extract the facial features. Gaze tracking is important to evaluate employees’ attention to specific tasks in order to prevent accidents and improve work quality. The presented method improves the current knowing workflow by applying the head pose estimation instead face detection for training and inference. The promisors results are presented and open points are also discussed. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In this paper, signals for acoustic beacons with M sequence are evaluated with various parameters for self-localization of mobile robot. The effect of (i) baud rate, (ii) carrier frequency and (iii) order of M sequence on DOA estimation error and localization error are evaluated by computer simulation. As a result, localization is possible with same class or more precision compared to the result from sound beacon with three chirp signals within 5 kHz-18 kHz by choosing the appropriate parameters, which are (i)baud rate is more than around 8 kHz and (ii)carrier frequency is 10 kHz. Particularly, (i) baud rate and (ii) carrier frequency have influence on the localization error. However, the localization error do not change into even a further baud rate in this condition if baud rate is higher than carrier frequency. In this simulation, no influence is confirmed from (iii)order of M sequence. The result indicates that M sequence can be used as signal of acoustic beacons instead of chirp, which occupies frequency band. © 2016 IEEE.

Effect of tensile axial loading on seismic performance (plastic shear deformation) of a laminated rubber bearing (LRB) was clarified. Cyclic loading tests were carried out to evaluate the relation between lateral force and lateral displacement of the LRB under seismic conditions (i.e., axial loading) and under worn conditions (i.e., 300 cycles). A strain measurement scheme based on image analysis was used to obtain the local strain fields of the LRB. Localized strain fields under tensile axial loading occurred more markedly at the corners of the free surface of the LRB than those under compressive axial loading. The seismic performance of the LRB under tensile or compressive axial loading was degraded severely after shear deformation incurred during 300 cycles. After 300 cycles, for the LRB under compressive axial loading, large localized shear strain fields occurred at the rubber layers underneath and on the inner steel plates, whereas, for the LRB under tensile axial loading, such large strain fields occurred at the rubber layers around the upper and lower steel plates. © 2005 EUCENTRE. The manufacturing industry is undergoing a major transformation based on the emerging industry 4.0 technologies, such as cloud computing, big data, internet of things and cyber-physical systems. These novelty technologies aim at providing central management for the user’s flexible manufacturing requirements and information. Also, the advent of these technologies has transformed the process planning and became crucial for the building of knowledge-based process planning environments. However, current praxis cannot deal with all semantic issues within this new paradigm, as requirements must be clear, consistent, measurable, stand-alone, testable, unambiguous, unique and verifiable. In this context, multicriteria decision analysis models have gained focus of the scientific and industrial communities as a support tool for the decision-making process in the product development and advanced manufacturing as these processes excel in environments with numerous and conflicting alternatives, providing the optimal alternative. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to highlight the current issues and research tendencies regarding ontology-based interoperability systems, multicriteria decision analysis and their integration. To achieve this goal, it will be applied a literature review on the targeted technologies, discussing the current tendencies of the field and the main issues regarding their implementation and integration. Finally, the paper points themes for further research and indicates viable concepts that can compose a solution for the gaps in a systematic manner. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
