Recent advances in the areas of microelectronics, information technology, and communication protocols have made possible the development of smaller devices, with increasing processing capacity and low energy consumption. This context contributed to the growth of applications based on the use of one or multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Networks composed of multiple UAVs are being used as a matter of improving the effectiveness, accuracy, and minoring the time of missions. However, these applications demand a high rate of data exchange, such as the localization information of each UAV, which can be a challenge, due to the limited transmission power of certain drone platforms. This article proposes a communication service for multi-UAV systems based on dividing the UAV-fleet into groups using the communication protocol IEEE 802.11 ac. Each group has its local network, whose participants can be chosen based on the UAV’s localization or task assignment. UAVs/Drones within the same group constantly communicate, exchanging pose information and specific mission-related data. On the other hand, communication between different groups is only established by messenger drones in pre-set times. The communication service from its detailed implementation to its simulated and field validation experiments is presented in this paper. The results of three different network topologies provide evidence that the proposed communication service for multi-UAV is efficient and can be used for drone cooperative missions.

To address current limitations in biomaterials for peripheral nerve repair regarding a lack of physiologically relevant signaling and immune response following implantation, this study evaluated the development and feasibility of a multi-cue biomaterial with physiologically relevant chemical, electrical, and physical signaling. To accomplish this, a bulk-functionalized poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) scaffold was fabricated using blend electrospinning to incorporate decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) to mediate the foreign body response in vivo and promote enhanced wound healing. Decellularized ECM was secreted and assembled by fibroblast cells and incorporated into the electrospinning solution with concentration values ranging from 0% to 0.4% (m/v). Physical, chemical, and electrical properties of the scaffold were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), mechanical tensile testing, and voltage readings for piezoelectricity. Blended scaffolds were evaluated in vitro for analysis of cell-material interactions in the context of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) repair and in vivo for immune response. In vitro work demonstrated increased cell metabolism and elongated, repair-like morphologies in Schwann cells on scaffolds with higher dECM concentrations. Subcutaneous implantation of blended scaffolds in rats at 7 days revealed limited multi-nucleated giant cell formation. Following 28 days in vivo, regenerative characteristics of the proliferative phase of wound healing were present with enhanced nerve growth and vasculature to scaffold. Overall, blend-electrospun scaffolds with native dECM showed promise in mitigating pro-inflammatory responses and promote advanced regenerative behaviors, thereby providing an implantable biomaterial with the necessary physical, chemical, and electrical characteristics desired for c

Urban greening is a critical strategy for sustainable urban development, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation. However, the effectiveness of urban greening varies depending on the specific goals (e.g., enhancing biodiversity, reducing urban heat, or both) and their spatial implementation. To address the spatial variability in the effectiveness of greening, we propose a spatial decision support model based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). This model aims to optimize urban greening locations to maximize biomass density, mitigate urban heat stress, and simultaneously improve landscape connectivity. Applied to Suwon City, South Korea, the model's effectiveness was evaluated against a Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario across four scenarios: Connectivity-based, Biomass density-based, Heat stress-based, and an Integrated-based scenario. The integrated approach, balancing trade-offs between ecological benefits and implementation costs, outperformed the BAU scenario by 8.84%. This outcome indicated of significant improvements in biomass density and landscape connectivity, despite highlighting a weaker correlation with heat stress mitigation. Our findings underscore the necessity of an integrated planning approach to urban greening, as it can contribute toward the attainment of urban development goals. Additionally, by proposing an app-based model for policymakers to utilize, our outputs should enable the reconciliation of multiple environmental objectives in urban landscapes. © 2024, The Authors. While anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) have achieved significant performance advances in recent decades, overpotentials remain high relative to their proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) counterparts, requiring AEMWE-specific catalyst layer design strategies to further advance this technology. In this work, the role of the ionomer in catalyst layer structure and quality, catalyst layer stability, and ion conduction for supporting electrolyte-fed AEMWEs is assessed for catalyst layers composed of NiFeO and PiperION TP85 from Versogen at variable ionomer contents (0-30 wt %) for tests up to 200 h. The results reveal that, for supporting electrolyte-fed AEM devices, the ionomer is not required for ion conduction through the catalyst layer. Instead, the ionomer is found to play a critical role in catalyst layer structure and stability, where intermediate ionomer contents lead to the lowest overpotentials, highest effective surface areas, and lowest catalyst layer resistances. Catalyst layer stability is found to be a function of both catalyst adhesion and ionomer loss. These results show that an ionomer may be selected which is not of the same chemistry as the anion exchange membrane, mitigating ionomer stability concerns throughout the catalyst layer and offering a pathway towards highly active and stable AEMWEs.

The shoe industry has been continuously growing in recent years. The goal of this study was to identify factors affecting perceived shoe quality among shoe manufacturing workers. A sample of 350 shoe manufacturing workers participated in answering a survey that was distributed using a purposive sampling approach. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) indicated that quality training was the most significant factor on perceived shoe quality, indicating that quality training should be prioritized and included in company programs to sustain quality products. Interestingly, perceived tooling/machinery conditions, teamwork and cooperation, the operator’s technical skills, and the operator’s quality mindset, also had significant effects on perceived shoe quality. This study is one of the first studies to explore perceived shoe quality among shoe manufacturing workers. The results may convey information for future research on perceived product quality, particularly for the shoe industry. Finally, our framework can be utilized for the enhancement of perceived product quality in shoe manufacturing industries worldwide. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Currently, Photovoltaic (PV) technology has higher demand in the market and gaining momentum day by day. However, partial shading is the most significant concern as it reduces the efficiency of standalone PV systems. Partially shading is typically induced by non-uniform sunlight and uncertain temperature fluctuations. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms play a major role in determining the overall system's efficiency. The PV system creates several peaks in its power voltage (P-V) characteristic curve under partial shadowing. To make the PV system run under partial shading at global maximum power point (GMPP), the dragonfly optimization (DFO) algorithm is put forward in this research article. The proposed DFO technique and other commonly used MPPT techniques, such as Particle swarm optimization (PSO), Perturb and Observe (PO), is investigated through theoretical analysis and simulation using Matlab/Simulink to authenticate the overall performance of the DFO approach under partial shading. Furthermore, the comparison demonstrates that the suggested DFO strategy provides very high reliability, efficiency, robustness, rapid power tracking and lower response time to trace the GMPP than PSO and PO techniques. Hence, the DFO technique's overall performance under partial shading is appropriate and satisfying. © 2021 IEEE.

The refurbishment of industrial heritage structures offers economic benefits and provides future generations with an insight into the industrial history of cities. However, industrial heritage projects possess unique attributes and risks, and the procedures for restoring, renovating, and converting these structures differ from those of other construction projects and their impacts to society. From the view of Social Impact management, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO/DIS 14001 and similar standards directly related with the sustainability. However, the design and method of construction are also important not only for workers’ safety but also public health and safety. For a holistic view Building Information Modeling provides us to gather information to reduce these concerns. This short communication covers societal impacts of a recently completed project in Germany that titled as Building Information Modeling (BIM) based sustainability, facility management and design for safety of industrial heritage buildings restoration/renovation projects and tries to put forward health and safety risks of Gasholder Restoration Projects to workers as well as to public during the project and after the completion by the aid of on site observations and expert panel discussions.

Monetary authorities globally have studied central bank digital currency (CBDC) for wholesale and retail applications since the 1990s. Besides countering private cryptocurrencies' influence, central banks have also explored other benefits of CBDC, such as improving their financial oversight, enhancing digital payment systems, and reducing transaction fees and friction. For several years, the Bank of Thailand has also invested in research and development of CBDC, including retail use cases. However, an optimized design for an official launch of a retail CBDC in Thailand has yet to be determined, resembling fragmented progress observed among other central banks. This research has leveraged disruptive innovation theory to provide a fresh perspective on retail CBDC as potentially disruptive financial innovations. Additionally, it has proposed an open innovation-based methodology to determine industry preferences concerning twelve design considerations for retail CBDC and their impact on nine indicators of disruptive innovation. Data has been collected and analyzed from 98 respondents outside the Bank of Thailand, all possessing relevant expertise or experience in electronic payments. Crosstab and logistic regression analyses have indicated that retail CBDC in Thailand could embark on a disruptive innovation trajectory by adhering to defined design choices. Significantly, entering a new detached market has been identified as the most promising entry point, accompanied by explicit recommendations on nine out of twelve design considerations. © 2025 The Authors

Most face recognition studies are based on standard frontal face databases, but in real life, the images we obtain are profile face images of any angle in most instances. In this case, the traditional face recognition methods cannot achieve the lowest recognition cost. Therefore, how to use the obtained profile face images to synthesize the corresponding frontal face images is important in the face recognition system. Besides, most traditional face recognition systems are try to find an accurate classifier to achieve the lowest error rate, implicitly assuming that all misclassification costs are equal. It is an unreasonable assumption because almost in all face recognition systems, different types of misclassification errors often lead to different misclassification costs. To address the two issues, we propose a cost-sensitive face recognition method based on generative adversarial nets. First, generate frontal face images using the two-channel generative adversarial nets, and then introduce cost-sensitive learning in the recognition process to consider the cost imbalance problem. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2020 IEEE.

Capsule microrobot has the potential to replace traditional endoscopy as a means of diagnosis and treatment. We proposed an outer spiral microrobot actuated by the magnetically actuated system in our previous research. A set of three-axes Helmholtz coil is used as the magnetically actuated system to generate the uniform rotating magnetic field. The outer spiral microrobot has a variety of movement methods because of its outer shape characters. This characteristic improves the feasibility of microrobot when it moves in multiple environments of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This paper analyzes the movement mode of the microrobot under different conditions. An outer spiral microrobot was fabricated and evaluated through two experiments with different environments. Experimental results show that the outer spiral microrobot has different speeds in the pipe with and without fluids. This study preliminarily explores the influence on the velocity control of the outer spiral microrobot and can be used as a reference for design and control of the microrobot in the GI tract. © 2020 IEEE.
