This paper aims to develop a novel cost-sensitive face recognition framework, which can gain the desirable recognition results with the least total cost. By combining two recently rising techniques: deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and sequential three-way decision (3WD) method, our framework can automatically label new samples and incorporates the delayed decision into decision-making process. We first explore the semi-supervised face recognition method in the case of the scarcity of labeled training data. By learning the class estimation and the deep convolution feature extraction of the unlabeled data jointly, the CNN trained by both labeled training data and unlabeled data is generated. Then, rather than getting a lower recognition error rate, we focus on seeking the minimum cost of misclassification at each decision step. For this purpose, we introduce the method of sequential 3WD in our cost-sensitive face recognition framework, which take each iteration of semi-supervised learning as a decision-making step. When there are insufficient labeled samples, a delayed decision will be adopted to reduce the decision cost. Finally, the test cost is also considered in the decision-making process, and the sum of misclassification cost and test cost is taken as the total cost. Using the total cost as the objective function, optimizing the performance indicators, training to get the classifier with the smallest total cost. In short, the model strives to get an optimal decision step, so that the reliable identification result can be obtained with only a small number of labeled data. The work value of this paper is to prove the effectiveness of our method in two face datasets. © 2020 IEEE.

Learning activities are an indicator of the learner's desire to learn during the learning process. The pattern of learner action is related to learning activities. In this case, in extracting the learning process, it is necessary to collect a lot of data through analysis of the learning process. The purpose of this study is to recommend and report the performance of an activity tracking system equipped with visual artifacts as an educational data mining approach to analyze action patterns when learners complete the arrangement of program code lines in each programming problem. In this study, data were taken from activity recordings when learners used interactive learning media for a basic programming subject called TOLSYASUPI-EduMed which had problem-solving learning models embedded in their interactions. Learning Analytics is used as a method of this research and data relationships from learner actions during the learning process using the “if-then” rule. Log data is used for recording and detecting activities carried out by learners. We confirm that the results of the study are based on the findings of the data relationship that if the lines of program code are too long (more than five lines) then almost all learners experience a bottleneck condition. The completion time of each question and the number of iterations in completing the program code lines for each question have also been recorded and have a pattern of connection between the data. The information that has been obtained is then forwarded to teachers or stakeholders as key information to make appropriate feedback to learners based on the results as a means of analyzing and evaluating the programming learning process.

The AC-BC (Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course) pavement layer is a middle layer that sits above the AC base and beneath the wear layer. To be used in this study were the river stone and river sand, Sabbang District, and North Luwu Regency in Mixed Laston AC-BC. With varying marble ash contents of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%, experiments were conducted on the characteristics of coarse and fine aggregate as well as marble ash as a filler substitute. The composition of the AC-BC mixture was then designed, the mix properties were determined by the Marshall test, and the Marshall stability residual mix at the optimal bitumen concentration was determined by the Marshall immersion test. The findings demonstrated that the pavement materials, located in Sabbang District, North Luwu Regency, meet the requirements for use as road pavement layer materials. The characteristics of the AC-BC combination with asphalt contents of 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0% were determined by the Marshall Test. The results of the Marshall Immersion test for the AC-BC mixture with an ideal bitumen content of 6.00% produced a residual Marshall stability of 96.5%, fulfilling the Indonesian requirement of 2018 Bina Marga Specifications, which is a minimum of 90%.

Study of the effect of soluble silicates (waterglass) and limestone on the compressive strength test, cohesion and modulus of soil stiffness

In order to sustain the construction of a building, soil stability is crucial. In this study, clay soil had waterglass and limestone added to it. Given the current state of the soil, the researchers attempted to improve it by adding an activator, specifically limestone and waterglass, as an addition. This study will keep track of the soil’s compressive strength after it has been activated with waterglass and limestone. The waterglass variation is 7% of the overall weight, while the variations for the limestone mix are 5%, 10%, and 15%. According to the test results, the soil has a compressive strength of 0.86 kg/cm2, making it unsuitable for use as subgrade soil. The test findings showed that after adding waterglass activator and limestone, the compressive strength value of the free rose. As can be observed, adding 5%, 10%, 15% limestone and 7% waterglass and curing the mixture for a day resulted in unconfined compressive strength values of 4.82 kg/cm2, 6.76 kg/cm2, and 7.48 kg/cm2, respectively. The compressive strength measurements after 3 days of curing were 7.13 kg/cm2, 7.55 kg/cm2, and 11.24 kg/cm2, respectively. These findings suggest that adding waterglass activators and limestone can strengthen soil.

This paper proposes a Hardware-in-the-Loop sim-ulation (HiLs) tested via square Helmholtz coils as a relative magnetic field generator. In technical terms, the HiLs is an indispensable tool for engineering design during rapid proto-typing of attitude determination and control algorithms for the turning parameters that control the attitude of the satellite, since most of the satellite's mission relies on its attitude, making this system one of the most essential to the satellite's operation. More-over, performing controlled experiments with the parameters for developing adaptive control algorithms improves the overall efficiency of the satellite's kinematic system. The conceptual design of a proposed system architecture can be composed of the electrical currents of 2.4-meter square Helmholtz coils produced by a low-level microcontroller equipped with a DC-motor driver by a pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal through real-time connection to an orbit propagator using a high-level computer. This research focuses on the attitude dynamic of satellites through the interaction between the Earth's magnetic field (EMF) and the magnetotorque in the satellite. To apply this phenomenon, the intensity and the direction of the magnetic field must be identified through Biot-Savart's law. Along with the EMF, the reference position is calculated using the standard general perturbations satellite orbit model (SGP4), and the intensity is modeled based on coefficients from the 13 th edition of the International Geo-magnetic Reference Field (IGRF). Therefore, this paper presents a detailed development of a HiLs testbed for distributed attitude determination and control systems (hardware and software co-design, protocol, and control theory). During a disaster, the more coordinated the response, the lesser its impacts are. One of the factors that has a major influence in response coordination is the interoperability among involved actors - public and private entities that interact to exchange information through the communication of people and systems. This factor is critical because it allows an efficient and effective mobilization of available resources towards reducing the effects caused by an event. This work proposes a framework for the development of Disaster management systems (DMS) that promote real time communication (information flow and process coordination) among different involved entities, primarily focusing on interoperability in its different levels. This framework is based both on a literature review of scientific works and a survey of worldwide initiatives related to improving disaster response. The main components of the related framework architecture are an SDK (software development kit), a common relational database, multiple communication platforms (e.g., a Web portal and a mobile app), and low-cost hardware to better collect and make needed information available quickly and accurately. © 2016 Proceedings of the 2016 Industrial and systems engineering Research Conference, ISERC 2016. Electroneutralization with simultaneous highly-efficient desalination exemplified by acidic brackish wastewater

Chemical neutralization has commonly been employed for the treatment of acidic brackish wastewater through the addition of external alkaline chemicals. However, this approach can potentially compromise the health of aquatic environment and resource sustainability. In this study, an innovative electroneutralization stack incorporating highly-efficient desalination was developed as a green solution for acidic hot-spring discharge treatment. Two distinct stack configurations, i.e., AECE and AEBP, were designed to evaluate the performance of simultaneous neutralization and desalination under different operating conditions. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of neutralizing acidic discharges while concurrently achieving a significant reduction in salinity. The brine solution produced during the process also presented the possibility of being harnessed as a valuable resource. Notably, the design parameters for the process were determined using a first-order kinetic model integrated with the Nernst-Planck equation. The maximum rate constants for sulfate and chloride removal were found to be 0.129 min−1 and 0.125 min−1 for AECE, and 0.039 min−1 and 0.042 min−1 for AEBP, respectively. The corresponding chloride-to-sulfate selectivities were observed to range from 0.42 to 1.00 for AECE, and from 0.15 to 1.21 for AEBP. Furthermore, the optimal operational conditions were identified through a comprehensive multi-objective assessment, resulting in process energy consumption ranging from 1.5 to 2.2 kWh/m3, while maintaining a clean water productivity of ∼30 L/m2/h. Significantly, in comparison to conventional chemical neutralization methods, the developed electroneutralization process demonstrated a substantial reduction in operating costs by 2 to 5-fold, along with a remarkable decrease in CO2 emissions (by approximately 4-fold) and the avoidance of sludge generation. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

General anaesthesia is a clinical procedure that involves the continuous monitoring of several parameters for the correct application of anaesthetics and associated drugs. Focusing on the automatic control in anaesthesia, this work presents a multiobjective optimization design of controllers based on the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) to solve the problem of drug delivery for induction of anaesthesia. Five Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers in a decentralized scheme were tuned for one specific patient and tested in a total of 24 simulated patients. Acting over the infusions of Propofol, Remifentanil, Atracurium, Dobutamine, and Sodium Nitroprusside the proposed controllers could maintain the controlled variables in a safe range for surgical procedures.

Towards Robust and Scalable Dispatch Modeling of Long-Duration Energy Storage

Energy storage technologies, including short-duration, long-duration, and seasonal storage, are seen as technologies that can facilitate the integration of larger shares of variable renewable energy, such as wind and solar photovoltaics, in power systems. However, despite recent advances in the techno-economic modeling of energy storage (particularly for short-duration applications), the operation and economics of long-duration energy storage are still incomplete in power systems modeling platforms. For instance, existing modeling approaches for long-duration storage are often based either on an oversimplified representation of power system operations or limited representation of storage technologies, e.g., evaluation of only a single application. This manuscript presents an overview of the challenges of modeling long-duration energy storage technologies, as well as a discussion regarding the capabilities and limitations of existing approaches. We used two test power systems with high shares of both solar photovoltaics- and wind (70% - 90% annual variable renewable energy shares) to assess long-duration energy storage dispatch approaches. Our results estimate that better dispatch modeling of long-duration energy storage could increase the associated operational value by 4% - 14% and increase the standard capacity credit by 14% - 34%. Thus, a better long-duration energy storage dispatch could represent significant cost saving opportunities for electric utilities and system operators. In addition, existing long-duration dispatch modeling approaches were tested in terms of both improved system value (e.g., based on production cost and standard capacity credit) and scalability (e.g., based on central processing unit time and peak memory usage).
