During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Propranolol hydrochloride can be considered a persistent and bioaccumulative pharmaceutical in the *** drug and its by-products are potentially toxic and have adverse effects,since these compounds have been associated with endocrine-disrupting effects,reproductive deficiencies,embryo abnormalities and pericardial ***_(2)–La 0.05%–carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin(CMCD)nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a simple two-step method,which consists of sonification and *** characterization analyses reveal that lanthanum is dispersed on the semiconductor surface,probably forming Ti–O–La bonds,which can induce oxygen vacancies and surface defects that effectively restrain the recombination of photogenerated electron/holes *** efficiency of TiO_(2)–La 0.05%–CMCD samples in degradation of propranolol under UV-light irradiation is higher than that of pristine TiO_(2) within 20 min reaction,probably due to complex formation between theβ-blocker and the oligosaccharide,which allows us to propose a photocatalytic mechanism based on the formation of intermediates and competition of these compounds to the radicals and CMCD cavities.

Searching reads from unknown origins in a reference database and finding evolutionarily similar genomes is central to many applications. Quantifying the similarity by estimating the distance between each read and matching references could further help downstream analyses such as taxonomic characterization or even placing the read on a reference phylogeny. Such distances can be computed using alignment. Since alignment becomes impractical for ultra-large reference databases, many use k-mer-based tools for downstream tasks, but these methods do not compute distances. We introduce krepp to compute the distance between a read and a genome using a maximum likelihood framework built around k-mers. We further introduce algorithms to place reads on a reference tree. Empirical evaluations show that krepp accurately estimates distances, scales well with large databases, and can place short reads coming from any part of the genome on a reference phylogeny. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The accuracy of prosodic structure prediction is crucial to the naturalness of synthesized speech in Mandarin text-to-speech system, but now is limited by widely-used sequence-to-sequence framework and error accumulation from previous word segmentation results. In this paper, we propose a span-based Mandarin prosodic structure prediction model to obtain an optimal prosodic structure tree, which can be converted to corresponding prosodic label sequence. Instead of the prerequisite for word segmentation, rich linguistic features are provided by Chinese character-level BERT and sent to encoder with self-attention architecture. On top of this, span representation and label scoring are used to describe all possible prosodic structure trees, of which each tree has its corresponding score. To find the optimal tree with the highest score for a given sentence, a bottom-up CKY-style algorithm is further used. The proposed method can predict prosodic labels of different levels at the same time and accomplish the process directly from Chinese characters in an end-to-end manner. Experiment results on two real-world datasets demonstrate the excellent performance of our span-based method over all sequence-to-sequence baseline approaches. © 2022 IEEE

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease. Complex pathogenesis behind disease formation and progression necessitated the development of new approaches to identify disease related genes and affected gene ontology (GO) terms. In this study, via exploiting GeNetOntology method, we have reanalysed a gene expression data including Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative colitis (UC) patients and controls. In order to identify IBD related genes and affected GO terms, GeNetOntology uses GO hierarchy as the biological domain knowledge while performing gene expression data analysis based on machine learning (ML). In the training part of GeNetOntology, genes annotated with selected ontology terms have been utilized to perform a two-class classification task which generates an important set of ontologies as an output. IBD data samples were obtained from peripheral blood and colon tissue. In order to investigate the effect of different collection sites, IBD data have been analysed under different scenarios;i.e., all samples, only tissue samples and only blood samples. Experimental findings indicate that GeNetOntology can successfully determine significant disease-related ontology terms. Performance of the model slightly differs according to the sample source. Via analysing the differences/commonalities between affected gene ontologies under different scenarios, we attempt to enlighten IBD development mechanisms. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

This study delves into the utilization of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for generating subject-specific time series sensor data, offering an innovative alternative to traditional metamodel-based simulations. We undertake an in-depth analysis of DoppelGANger, a prominent GAN variant for time series data and metadata generation, evaluating its efficiency and efficacy. The sensor data for this investigation was sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which served as the foundational training set. We scrutinized the synthesized sensor data corresponding to various physical attributes, focusing on the temporal and multi-dimensional statistical properties. Our empirical findings underscore the potential of GANs to adeptly capture the time-dependent correlations and the intricate statistical characteristics inherent in multi-dimensional data. This insight into GANs' capabilities is a crucial step towards more sophisticated synthetic data generation, with significant implications for future applications in wearable technology and personalized health monitoring systems.

Automatic speaker verification (ASV) plays a critical role in security-sensitive environments. Regrettably, the reliability of ASV has been undermined by the emergence of spoofing attacks, such as replay and synthetic speech, as well as adversarial attacks and the relatively new partially fake speech. While there are several review papers that cover replay and synthetic speech, and adversarial attacks, there is a notable gap in a comprehensive review that addresses defense against adversarial attacks and the recently emerged partially fake speech. Thus, the aim of this paper is to provide a thorough and systematic overview of the defense methods used against these types of attacks. © 2023, CC BY.

As the implementation of MW order photovoltaic power plants (PV) gathers a significant number of specialists, their connection to the medium voltage (MV) distributors involves problems related to the following aspects: determining the place and point of connection (distance from the electrical station busbars), the degree of the distributor charge in the context of the entire network related to the respective station, maintaining the voltage level within the range provided by the grid operator, the analysis of the PV connection in the extreme scenarios, related to the real load in the considered scheme, the voltage level to which the PV is connected. The above aspects have been considered and dealt with in this article for the purpose of connecting a 2.4 MW PV to an MV distributor with a high degree of charge due to the existing power plants or those with technical approval obtained for connection. Thus, after modeling the MV network and running the steady-state calculation program, its characteristic values have been checked if they are within the allowed value ranges in accordance with the performance standard. After determining the situation generated by coupling the PV to the grid and highlighting the negative aspects, several methods for optimizing the integration of the power injection point into the grid were proposed. © 2023 IEEE.

Onomatopoeia is a language that sensorially expresses the state of objects and human feelings. Recently, onomatopoeia has found several applications. For example, onomatopoeia is used in product packaging because it familiarizes the products to the customer and easily leaves an impression. Studies have thus analyzed the effect of onomatopoeias and their features. However, the difference between onomatopoeias with similar nuances has not been quantitatively clarified because there are numerous ways of expressing onomatopoeias. This study focusses on understanding the meaning of onomatopoeias. We extracted characteristic words in each part of speech, which influences onomatopoeias and proposed the use of semantic analysis with these characteristic words to understand the relationship between their onomatopoeias. The semantic analysis extracts the onomatopoeia that is obtained by adding affective elements to the existing onomatopoeias;this helps understand the relationship between onomatopoeias through these affective elements. We used global vectors for word representation (GloVe) to perform the semantic analyses. Thus, we can use the onomatopoeia when designing a new product package by understanding the consumer's perception of the onomatopoeia using the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.

A digital twin calibration for an automated material handling system in a semiconductor fab

To address the complex, dynamic, and stochastic nature of an automated material handling system (AMHS) in a semiconductor fabrication facility (fab), practitioners have used a high-fidelity discrete-event simulation as its digital twin model for decision-making over several decades. Previous studies have focused on fast digital twin-based decision-making in AMHSs under the assumption that their digital twin models are credible enough to prescribe decisions. However, parameter uncertainty and intrinsic bias in an AMHS digital twin model can lead to an inaccurate representation of its field system. To address the challenge, this paper introduces the Bayesian calibration, which modularly estimates a digital twin outcome and its discrepancy using Gaussian process priors. A calibration framework for digital twin-based decision-making is also presented using an AMHS example. Our experimental results with various AMHS operating scenarios demonstrate that: (1) a sophisticated digital twin calibration is necessary, especially when AMHSs operate under heavy-workload scenarios;and (2) exploring model bias considerably decreases the prediction error of an AMHS digital twin within a limited number of field observations. Moreover, we discuss the applicability of the approach to digital twins in various fields. © 2025 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers
