The study is focused on the development of an automation platform performing data mining works on telemetry database for computer systems. Very common computer systems encounter failures in an unexpected manor. It is therefore valuable to have prognostics task for computer systems to minimize the situation of unexpected system failure. Data acquisition schemes employing telemetry techniques are considered the most effective method for the collection of in-service information for computer systems. However, analysis of the enormous telemetry database with high complexity is another important phase before useful knowledge can be extracted. In this research, an automatic data mining platform is reported for the extraction of useful knowledge from the telemetry database. This paper describes the structure and basic theories underlying the data mining of the telemetry database. Also, an automatic computer program capable of performing database management, filtering, data analysis and reporting is described. Some useful highlights generated with the platform are reported for the telemetry database. © 2010 IEEE.

Meta-heuristics are efficient techniques for solving large scale optimization problems in which traditional mathematical techniques are impractical or provide sub-optimal solutions. The Shuffled Frog Leaping algorithm (SFLA) is a stochastic iterative method, bio-inspired on the memetic evolution of a group of frogs when seeking for food, which combines the social behavior-based of the particle swarm optimization technique (PSO) and the global information exchange of memetic algorithms. However, the SFLA algorithm suffers on large execution times, being this problem clearly evident when solving complex optimization problems for embedded applications. This drawback can be overcome by exploiting the parallel capabilities of the SFLA. This paper proposes a hardware parallel implementation of the SFLA algorithm (HPSFLA) using FPGAs (Field programmable gate Arrays) and the efficient floating-point arithmetic. The proposed architecture allows the SFLA to improve the functionality of the algorithm as well as to decrease the execution times by implementing parallel frogs and parallel memeplexes. Three well-known benchmark problems have been used to validate the implemented algorithm and simulation results demonstrate that the HPSFLA speeds-up by factors of 362, 727 and 211 a C-code implementation using an embedded microprocessor for the Sphere, Rastrigin and Rosenbrock benchmarks problems, respectively. Synthesis, simulation and execution time results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed HPSFLA architecture for embedded optimization systems. © 2010 IEEE.

The conventional ultrasonic inspection is a detection of the ultrasonic wave reflected at the abnormal points in an inspected object. However, the ultrasound passes through an indistinct or minute abnormality. The conventional ultrasonic inspection is unavailable to detect them. In this paper, the authors focus their attention to frequency modulation of the ultrasonic wave, and attempt to detect the minute abnormality by using it. In the proposed method, the frequency modulation is observed as a variation of instantaneous frequency of the ultrasonic wave, and the instantaneous frequency is defined as the derivative of a time-dependent phase angle of the ultrasonic wave. In the case that the indistinct or minute abnormality exists in an object, the authors find that the instantaneous frequency of the ultrasound passing through the abnormality deviates from usual frequency level. Therefore, the abnormality can be detected by the variation of the instantaneous frequency, that is, the frequency modulation. It is difficult for the usual Fourier transform to catch the modulation because of a limitation of a frequency resolution. A feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simple experiment.

Nowadays, Kaizen technology has been widely utilized as one of the tools of Kaizen activity. However development of it has been mostly performed under the support of experts which have the know-how to apply Kaizen technology. One relevant way to realize the progress of Kaizen activity without their support is to establish an approach enabling systematic technology development. In this paper, especially focusing on Visual management technology as one of the Kaizen technologies, a technological level of Visual management technology as one guideline of the approach is discussed. The proposed technological level consists of the following six levels from primitive level to advanced level: (1) visualization of unusual phenomena, (2) visualization of root cause, (3) visualization of spill-over effect, (4) visualization of procedure to cope with the problems, (5) visualization of real time action sequence for problem solving and (6) visualization of 100% normality. Two case studies are performed to assure the relevance of the proposed level by focusing on Kaizen projects of chemical plant. Then the proposed technological level is qualified by experts as useful method for education/training against manufacturing workers through collaboration with a factory eager to implement Visual management technology.

The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is a member of the wide category of swarm intelligence methods for solving global optimization problems. Its basic idea is the simulation of simplified animal social behaviors such as fish schooling and bird flocking. PSO algorithms are attracting attentions in recent years, due to their ability of keeping good balance between convergence and diversity maintenance. Several attempts have been made to improve the performance of the original PSO algorithm. In this paper, a modified version of the original PSO based on Cauchy distribution and dynamic adaptation of inertia factor, named modified PSO (MPSO), is proposed. to estimate the unknown variables of an inverse heat transfer problem. To validate the optimization performance of the proposed MPSO, an inverse heat transfer problem is illustrated and the algorithm has to estimate its unknown variables. The results testify that the MPSO can perform well in an inverse heat transfer problem. ©2010 IEEE.

The practice of engineering management has been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. However, the academic discipline of engineering management has existed for a little over forty years. engineering management was established as a M.S. program in 1965 at the University of Missouri- Rolla (now Missouri S & T). Today there are over 70 universities offering this important degree in the United States. In Europe, engineering management education is generally linked with Industrial engineering. The largest engineering management organization in Europe is ESTIEM. In China, engineering management was introduced as an academic discipline in the mid-1980's according to Dr. Zhongtuo Wang of Dalian University of Technology. Today there are over 150 universities offering engineering management programs in China.

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms have been proposed to solve engineering problems that require to find an optimal point of operation. There are several embedded applications which requires to solve online optimization problems with a high performance. However, the PSO suffers on large execution times, and this fact becomes evident when using Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) microprocessors in which the operational frequencies are low in comparison with the high operational frequencies of traditional personal computers (PCs). This paper compares two hardware implementations of the parallel PSO algorithm using an efficient floating-point arithmetic which perform computations with large dynamic range and high precision. The full-parallel and the partially-parallel PSO architectures allow the parallel capabilities of the PSO to be exploited in order to decrease the running time. Three well-known benchmark test functions have been used to validate the hardware architectures and a comparison in terms of cost in logic area, quality of the solution and performance is reported. In addition, a comparison of the execution time between the hardware and two C-code software implementations, based on a Intel Core Duo at 1.6GHz and a embedded Microblaze microprocessor at 50MHz, are presented. © 2010 IEEE.

The objective of this work is to embed watermark information into digital audio data as the deterioration of sound quality is not perceivable to human ears. And hence, we consider that watermark information is embedded in the consonance to melody line or bass line. Generally, unison, octave, perfect fifth and perfect fourth are called consonance and human ears can hardly feel annoyed for consonance. And hence, we focus on perfect fifth and perfect fourth in the consonance. For decision of embedding positions, we need to estimate tone pitches, and we use spectrogram analysis as a technique of automatic music transcription. We embed watermark information with perfect fifth or perfect fourth of consonance from the pitch which is estimated by spectrogram analysis, and we aim the sound quality of watermarked audio signal without sense of discomfort. And hence, we propose an audio watermarking method by using automatic music transcription information. ©2010 IEEE.

Formulating the practical schedule planning for the software project, is the basis of orderly carrying out the software project, is the key of project to success. In this paper, study the application of using the critical path method and related technologies to formulate the computer program algorithm for the software project schedule planning. First of all, to clarify the basis preparations, including determine the project scope, definition activities, activity sequencing, activity duration estimation, etc;Secondly, to derive the critical path, including calculate the active time , determine the critical path;then study the Software algorithm, including database design and use the problem analysis diagram to show the core program algorithm;finally, using the program, which is written in accordance with the algorithm, to simulate project plan instance, and according to the simulate result, for the specific management. The results show that, using the computer software programs to achieve the critical path method and the related techniques to formulate the schedule, to reduce the workload of plan formulation, improve the accuracy of the plan, has the higher theoretical and practical value. © 2010 IEEE.

Safety information of evacuees is the most important information for relief activities in disasters. We have discussed about required conditions for computer systems destined for supporting effective relief activities after disasters. In addition, on the basis of this discussion, we also have proposed a network construction algorithm and have performed preliminary evaluation about the installation locations among wireless stations and wireless link connectivity. In this paper, we report the results of preliminary evaluation of the performance of information sharing algorithm ADES. In addition, this paper introduces an improved system called ADES-Plus. ADES-Plus system employs information management function by an existing database. Furthermore, in accordance with the required speed of information sharing, we add a function that enables flexible processings. These new functions are confirmed to be work well through computational experiments. © 2010 IEEE.
