The growth of distributed generation or renewable generation resources and advanced information systems add uncertainties and complexity to the energy system and call for a “smart grid” solution. The mathematical models that are conventionally utilized in the energy management system usually take a long time to develop and execute and are not flexible enough to accommodate operational rules for generations (wind, solar and hydro) under varying conditions and loads. A rule-based system model would allow power system operators (who may lack experience in exploiting mathematical models and computer capabilities) to model their operations directly using their expertise, which enables the power system to make quick responses to real-time conditions. In this paper, a new rule-based system design methodology for power system automation and control is proposed. The methodology formulates the rule-based system as an optimal control problem in a feedback control architecture. The solution to the optimal control problem provides action rules for power system substation operations to achieve operator-configured preferences while minimizing cost. The proposed methodology, which integrates real-time information, optimal control, environmental constraints and human's expertise, provides a systematic tool for rule-based system design that gives more robust and realistic solutions.

The healthcare services cost are constantly increasing during the last 20 years. This trend has two origins: on one hand the people resort to drugs and healthcare services more often than in the past because more medical treatment are known; on the other hand, this evolution was not supported by an intelligent growth and design of healthcare structure and services. Indeed, a lot of hospital processes, such as drugs and equipments purchasing and managing, are not under control of hospital managers. This work faces the cost and management criticalities presenting a healthcare system as a multi-agent cooperative network. The proposed model faces the challenge of (i) gaining the benefits deriving from successful collaborative models already used in industrial systems and (ii) transferring the most appropriate industrial management practices. The model exploits an operations research technique based on combinatorial auctions in order to effective assign drugs to wards.

Organizations that have adopted the principles of the Six Sigma methodology have become aware that once they have achieved the five sigma quality levels, the only way to progress further is to redesign their products or processes. This has led to the development of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). Recently, DFSS has gained much popularity due to the widespread application of Six Sigma principles, particularly in new product development. This research employs the systematic view of the DFSS process and combines it with quality tools to improve the design quality of Original Design Manufacture (ODM) electronic products. A wireless communication company applying the DFSS methodology was analyzed, and an index of one-Year Return Rate (YRR) from TL 9000 Quality management System Requirements of the worldwide telecommunication industry was used to evaluate the measurable effect of product design quality. The average YRR result of an ODM product group employing the DFSS process was observed to be better than an Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) product group without the DFSS process. Furthermore, its relative value can be improved up to 25 times or 1.12 sigma. By applying the DFSS methodology, the demands of customers can be further satisfied, and the specific needs of the customer are fulfilled.

Ammonia (NH3) emission rates were measured at two large high-rise layer barns in Ohio, from August 1, 2007 to March 17, 2008. The tests were conducted to evaluate effects of dried distiller grain solubles (DDGS) in the diet, combined with several best management practices (BMPs). The BMPs included the operation of 36 manure drying fans in the manure pit, reduced crude protein in the feed, improved waterline leak management practices, and lower bird density. The DDGS feed and the BMPs were implemented in Barn 2, and tested for their combined effectiveness on mitigating NH3 emissions. The average daily mean (ADM) NH3 emission rates from the untreated Barn 1 was 729 g d-1 AU-1 (2.21 g d-1 hen -1), where AU is the animal unit (500 kg live mass). When the fiber-enhanced diets and BMPs were implemented, the mean paired difference of NH3 emission between the two barns was 72% (treated barn was lower, n=90 out of 105 days). When only the BMPs were implemented, NH3 emission reduction averaged 64%. However, the reduction was not entirely attributed to the BMPs because of manure remaining from the previous test. The effects of BMPs were evaluated again after manure removal and pit re-bedding in the last test period. The BMPs had reduced the emission rate by 55%. The pit drying fans, leakage managementprogram, and other BMPs successfully lowered the manure moisture content in the treated barn and contributed to lower NH 3 emissions.

Meta-heuristics are efficient techniques for solving large scale optimization problems in which traditional mathematical techniques are impractical or provide suboptimal solutions. The Shuffled Frog Leaping algorithm (SFLA) is a stochastic iterative method, bio-inspired on the memetic evolution of a group of frogs when seeking for food, which combines the social behavior-based of the particle swarm optimization technique (PSO) and the global information exchange of memetic algorithms. However, the SFLA algorithm suffers on large execution times, being this problem clearly evident when solving complex optimization problems for embedded applications. This drawback can be overcome by exploiting the parallel capabilities of the SFLA. This paper proposes a hardware parallel implementation of the SFLA algorithm (HPSFLA) using FPGAs (Field programmable gate Arrays) and the efficient floating-point arithmetic. The proposed architecture allows the SFLA to improve the functionality of the algorithm as well as to decrease the execution times by implementing parallel frogs and parallel memeplexes. Three well-known benchmark problems have been used to validate the implemented algorithm and simulation results demonstrate that the HPSFLA speeds-up by factors of 362, 727 and 211 a C-code implementation using an embedded microprocessor for the Sphere, Rastrigin and Rosenbrock benchmarks problems, respectively. Synthesis, simulation and execution time results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed HPSFLA architecture for embedded optimization systems.

A complex optimization problem in robotics is the optimum movement between certain physical configurations while minimizing certain criteria. The fundamental objective in movement planning for robot arms is to minimize movement time, total distance, joint torque, avoiding obstacles and the robot arm itself as an obstacle. This paper presents a study on clonal selection algorithm (CSA) and CSA with oppositional approach to optimize the 2D point to point movement of a 3-links robot arm. Simulations with MATLAB of the problem were implemented with both techniques to minimize an objective function depending on the mentioned criteria. Results of both methods are presented, showing that the CSA with oppositional approach presented better results than the classical CSA in terms of convergence and response quality.
