In traditional visual secret sharing (VSS) scheme, the pixel expansion is a drawback which not only increases the transmission cost, but also distorts the recovered secret image. This paper proposes a visual secret sharing scheme which hides a secret into two share images without pixel expansion. It provides high quality of recovered secret image. The experimental results show the stacking result of share images in our scheme is smoother than others. Copyright © 2009 ACM.

Sustainability appraisal of used vehicle trade policy options in sub-Saharan African countries

This paper examines the structure of contemporary vehicle mitigation commitments after lead gasoline phase out in sub-Sahara Africa. First, this paper reviews some of the leading domestic trade policy proposals (emission reduction actions) with regard to their expected technology impacts. Next, it assesses the options based on establishing benchmarks for measuring policy performance in curbing vehicle emissions simultaneously with core sustainable development priorities. Assessing these options identifies the key variables in designing mitigation commitments, offers criteria for evaluating different approaches and discusses the implications of the leading alternatives. This paper argues that a more pronounced dilemma of synergies exists between vehicle emissions reduction and core development concerns as the major players target emissions too narrowly. Finally, this paper sheds more light on strategies that could be employed simultaneously at the regional and domestic levels to enhance sustainable development as trade continues to grow and evolve. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2008.

Risk assessment of arsenic-induced internal cancer at long-term low dose exposure

Previous epidemiological studies have indicated that ingested inorganic arsenic is strongly associated with a wide spectrum of internal cancers. Little is conducted, however, to assess health effects at long-term low dose exposures by linking biologically based mechanistic models and arsenic epidemiological data. We present an integrated approach by linking the Weibull dose-response function and a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model to estimate reference arsenic guideline. The proposed epidemiological data are based on an 8 years follow-up study of 10,138 residents in arseniasis-endemic areas in southwestern and northeastern Taiwan. The 0.01% and 1% excess lifetime cancer risk based point-of-departure analysis were adopted to quantify the internal cancer risks from arsenic in drinking water. Positive relationships between arsenic exposures and cumulative incidence ratios of bladder, lung, and urinary-related cancers were found using Weibull dose-response model r2 = 0.58-0.89). The result shows that the reference arsenic guideline is recommended to be 3.4 μg L-1 based on male bladder cancer with an excess risk of 10-4 for a 75-year lifetime exposure. The likelihood of reference arsenic guideline and excess lifetime cancer risk estimates range from 1.9-10.2 μg L-1 and 2.84 × 10-5 to 1.96 × 10-4, respectively, based on the drinking water uptake rates of 1.08-6.52 L d-1. This study implicates that the Weibull model-based arsenic epidemiological and the PBPK framework can provide a scientific basis to quantify internal cancer risks from arsenic in drinking water and to further recommend the reference drinking water arsenic guideline. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. To improve the responsiveness of engine speed control to disturbances, robust controls were investigated by simulation. The intake air control system of a gasoline engine is a typical nonlinear system, and the disturbances and parameter perturbations are generally regarded as being the unstable factors with regard to engine control. In this paper, a Mean-Value Engine Model (MVEM) with disturbances and parameter perturbations is investigated using Sliding Mode Control (SMC), which is a form of variable structure control, with a view to address instability in the idle speed control process. The simulation results confirmed that, compared with a conventional PI (Proportional-Integral) controller, the stability of the idle speed for an engine that is being subjected to disturbances, parameter variations and background noise is greatly improved by the application of SMC.

A hybrid approach of DEA （data envelopment analysis） and TOPSIS （technique for order performance （preference） by similarity to ideal solution） is proposed for multiple criteria decision analysis in emergency management. Two DEA-based optimization models are constructed to facilitate identifying parameter information regarding criterion weights and quantifying qualitative criteria in TOPSIS. An emergency management case study utilizing data from the Emergency management Australia （EMA） Disasters Database is provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed analysis procedure.

In this paper, user-friendly micro manipulation system for the bio-medical scientist is introduced. An operator usually is not familiar with robot technology. However, supports for RT system have great means for such users. So, user friendly system architecture is necessary to provide useful operation scheme. In this paper, the component-based architecture for micro manipulation system is proposed. Realizing component-based architecture, OpenRTM-aist, which is one of the robot middleware, is focused. And, based on this middleware, micro manipulation system and observation system are constructed as examples. ©2009 IEEE.

The Kyoto protocol was negotiated as a global effort to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The future standing of companies will be seriously affected by the steps they take today in regards to the environment. Perhaps, if vigilant actions are not taken by a firm then it could easily be left behind in today's highly competitive world. This paper presents a novel optimization model for green supply chain management, which integrates environmental management and its impact into the supply chain while taking carbon emissions into account. The model, which we formulate as a mixed-integer program (MIP), can help to reveal an optimal strategy for companies to meet their carbon cap, while minimizing opportunity cost. We demonstrate the viability of the model via a computational study.

West Virginia University College of engineering and Mineral Resources and The EdVenture Group have partnered successfully over the past four years to increase the awareness and classroom applications of engineering curriculum through technology with 7th-12th grade students across the state of WV. Math and Science teachers from across the state have collaborated with education consultants, industry professionals, graduate students, and one another to gain knowledge and create units that focus on STEM careers and curriculum. The units, known as TIME (Tools for Integrating Math and engineering) Kits, are stored electronically on a free teacher resource site for use in classrooms across the country. ***. com The 12-hour units of instruction are developed during a week-long workshop that provides classroom teachers with the opportunity to work with engineering faculty, graduate assistants and industry experts. The model is based on providing time for teachers to learn, tools for teachers to use and strategies to assist them in focusing on and connecting engineering to STEM course work. By connecting university experts, industry experts and 7th-12th grade educators a new network has been created to link these groups and bring all areas of knowledge and application to classroom instructional units. All units are based on content standards, 21st century skills, and a problem-based learning approach and translate regionally to other states Pre and post-assessments are administered to students who take part in a TIME Kit unit to gauge the acquisition of math and/or science concepts as well as attitudinal data concerning engineering as a career choice. This paper describes a sample TIME Kit for illustration. The paper also shows how, over three years, the partners have overcome roadblocks in teacher training, which teacher incentives to use and which to avoid, and how to ensure a solid program evaluation. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.
