A new class of meta-heuristics called SOMA (Self-Organizing Migrating Algorithm) was proposed in recent literature. SOMA works on a population of potential solutions called specimen and it is based on the self-organizing behavior of groups of individuals in a ¿social environment¿. This paper proposes a modified SOMA approach to solving the economic load dispatch problem of thermal generators with the valve-point effect. To show the performance of the proposed modified SOMA algorithm based on fundamentals of normative knowledge in cultural algorithms, which was applied to test the power economic problem comprised 10 generating units with valve-point effects and multiple fuels for the load demands of 2400 MW. Simulation results show that the classical and modified SOMA algorithms are efficient and have good convergence property when compared with results of other optimization methods reported in the literature.

This research is concerned with plagiarism in software design. Specifically, the focus is on database design. Generally, producing plagiarized software may be done through illegal use of someone else's source code or database design. Since it is hard to steal source code from the original author(s), the database schema is usually easier to be viewed, studied and hence plagiarized. Efficient design of a database schema requires an understanding of the application area, the data usage patterns, and the underlying database management system. Stealing the effort of this step may be rewarding to some. The main contribution of this paper is the suggestion of a software tool for detecting plagiarized database schemas using structural fingerprints of database tables.

This paper is focused on the problem of uncertain process control by using RMPC (robust model predictive control). A relevant class of RMPC algorithms is the one characterized by the use of the LMI framework. This field started in the middle of nineties and since then several works applying LMIs in the context of RMPC have been proposed. Most of them assume a polytopic representation of the process uncertainties and require full-state feedback. On the other hand, several works describing the theory and applicability of OBF (orthonormal basis functions) in identification and control fields can be found in the literature. So, the present paper proposes the use of OBF for uncertain process modelling and for RMPC algorithm synthesis. It is shown that, due to the proposed approach, one obtains an output feedback control law, with set-point tracking. This represents an advantage in actual applications. Moreover, well established state feedback RMPC strategies can be reviewed under the OBF modelling perspective. Simulation results illustrate the proposed methodology.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of a deep-ground-well method used for improving the grounding resistances of indoor-type substations located in complex soils in the system of Taiwan Power Company (TPC). Three and two ground wells are installed at Kungchia and Kuoan 161/23.9-11.95 kV substations as examples for assessing the improvement. The grounding resistances of ground wells are calculated by one- and equivalent n-layer soil models with the image method and the current distribution electromagnetic grounding and soil structure analysis (CDEGS) program. On the other hand, the grounding resistances of ground wells are measured by the fall-of-potential method. As a result, the calculated grounding resistances of ground wells based on an equivalent two-layer soil model are approximately equal to the measured grounding resistances of ground wells. Moreover, the grounding resistances of Kungchia and Kuoan indoor-type substations after installing ground wells are improved about 70.29 and 58.40%, respectively. In this paper, we presented a design for an automated single cell loading and supply system that can be used with complex microfluidic applications requiring single cell loading such as the current nuclear transplantation method. The aim of the system is to automatically transfer mammalian donor (~15μm) or egg (~100μm) cells one by one from a container to a PDMS micro-channel and then transport them to other modules. The system consists of two main parts;a single cell suction module, and a PDMS-based microfluidic chip controlled by an external pump. The desired number of vacuumed cells can be directed into the microfluidic chip and stored in a docking area. From the batch, they can be moved to next module by activating pneumatic pressure valves located on two sides of the chip. The entire mechanism is combined with monitoring systems that perform the detection/tracking and control program.
