In Multiple Fibers Optical Packet Switched (MF-OPS) networks, multiple data on one wavelength can be transmitted over multiple fibers. Therefore, it is important to consider the multiple fibers' resources in wavelength assignment problem. This paper focuses on this problem and proposes a wavelength assignment method smoothing available fiber resources for MF-OPS networks. As a result, the paper clarifies the effectiveness of considering multiple fiber resources.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main factors involved in pollution control and global warming in industrialized nations. Various treatment methods involving incineration, adsorption, etc., were employed to reduce VOCs concentration. Various absorbents, such as activated carbon, zeolite, silica gel or alumina, and so on were broadly used to adsorb VOCs in various industrial applications. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was handled to analyze the thermal characteristics of absorbents. Typically, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to evaluate the structure variation of absorbents under high temperature situations. In view of pollution control and loss prevention, versatility and analysis of recycled adsorbents are necessary and useful for various industrial applications. © 2009 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

Man as a social being, as a being in social relations, is in constant motion. Such mobility affects the social networks that Man builds throughout one's existence. Networks that can consist of dozens, hundreds or even thousands of other people, with various degrees of mobility. During the formation of such networks, problems can arise, such as elements that concentrate many relationships, very isolated individuals or peripheral members of a network, people who are the only link between two distinct groups, agglomerations of people in isolated points. This can cause a series of losses to the most important element that flows through social networks: knowledge. In scientific social networks, this assertion takes even more importance, mainly on account of the mobility of researchers and the excess of knowledge circulating in it, making it more vulnerable to the movements of Man. It is with the intent of solving this problem that our work seeks to achieve success, as it analyzes the scientific social networks based on the GCC tool detects the problems related to them, and suggests recommendations of relationships to users considered harmful to the flow of knowledge in the network. We call this process of social network balancing. For the evaluation of this work we conducted a comparison with several similar proposals, and developed a working prototype, which in turn was used to make our case studies.

The mobile cellular systems are expected to support multiple services with guaranteed quality of service (QoS).But, the ability of wireless systems to accommodate expected growth of traffic load and broadband services is limited by available radio frequency spectrum. Call admission control (CAC) is one of the resource management functions, which regulates network access to ensure QoS provisioning. However, the decision for CAC is very challenging issue due to user mobility, limited radio spectrum, and multimedia traffic characteristics. In our previous work, we proposed a fuzzy-based CAC system and compared the performance of the proposed system with shadow cluster concept (SCC). In this work, we extend our work by considering the priority of the on-going connections. We evaluate by simulations the performance of the proposed system and compare its performance with our previous work. The performance evaluation shows that the proposed system has a good behavior in keeping the QoS of on-going connections.

Our final goal is to utilise a cognition viewpoint for the engineering of a better design of human communication tools. In this paper, we extend the concept of affordance to cover human-to-human communication and propose the novel concept of 'human affordance', which is afforded from humans, not artefacts. As one possible utilisation of the concept, we introduce the example of affordance in evaluating the strength of agreement/disagreement phrases. In text-based communication, it is important for mutual understanding to effectively afford information about how a person feels about the text itself. This paper presents experimental results on over/underestimation in understanding the strength of agreement/disagreement in text-based communication. The human affordance identified in typical agreement/disagreement phrases is analysed in order to explore how to better augment human affordance in text-based communication. Mobile Ad Hoc Networks are communication networks built up of a collection of mobile devices which can communicate through wireless connections. Mobile Ad Hoc Networks have many challenges such as routing, which is the task of directing data packets from a source node to a given destination. This task is particularly hard in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: due to the mobility of the network elements and the lack of central control, robustness and adaptability in routing algorithms and work in a decentralized and self organizing way. Through the principles of systems architecting and engineering, the problem statement in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks could be defined more specifically and accurately. The uncertainties and techniques for mitigating and even taking positive advantages of them can be achieved through a framework of uncertainties as in [1]. The systems methodology framework called Total systems Intervention (TSI) described by Flood and Jackson [2] select a systems methodology for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. The purpose of this paper is to show how TSl when integrated with a framework created to understand the risks and opportunities can help develop strategies to minimize the risks and to take advantage of the opportunities for facing challenges in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. ©2008 IEEE.

During gene expression, transcription factors are unable to bind to a transcription binding site (TFBS) involved in regulation if DNA methylation has occurred at the TFBS. Methyl-CpG-binding proteins may also occupy the TFBS and prevent the functioning of a transcription factor. Thus, the methylation status of CpG sites is an important issue when trying to understand gene regulation and shows strong correlation with the TFBS involved. In addition, CpG islands would seem to undergo cell-specific and tissue-specific methylation. Such differential methylation is presented at numerous genetic loci that are essential for development. Current DNA methylation site prediction tools need to be improved so that they include TFBS features and have greater accuracy in terms of the DNA region that is involved in methylation. We developed models that compare the differences across these regions and tissues. The TFBSs, DNA properties and DNA distribution were used as features for this classification. From the results, we found some TFBSs that were able to discriminate whether a sequence was methylated or not. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy estimated using 10-fold cross validation were 90.8%, 80.54%, and 86.07%, respectively. Thus, for these four regions and twelve tissues, the performance levels (ACC) were all greater than 80%. We propose that the differential features or methylations vary between the different regions because the features common to each DNA region made up only 50% of the top 70 features. Risk communication about high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal is necessary for public acceptance of the HLW disposal program in Japan. To support risk communication, we developed the Online Risk Communication Assistant Tool (ORCAT) system on the World Wide Wed (WWW). In this research, we analyzed the changes in participants' attitudes to HLW disposal through the test operation of the ORCAT system. We carried out the test operation of the ORCAT system from Oct. 29 to Dec. 12, 2005. One hundred fifty nonexpert participants, five experts, and two facilitators participated in this operation. To measure the changes in participants' attitudes to a HLW disposal program, we carried out web questionnaires before and after the test operation. Consequently, we found that most of the participants exhibited on increased level of concern about HLW as well as increased understanding regarding the necessity of HLW disposal. Nonetheless, they did not necessarily reduced their perceived risk of HLW disposal. In addition, we also found that the active participants drew conclusions based on thorough review of the information that experts posted on the ORCAT system, while the inactive participants made decisions primarily based on the context of the information presented on the ORCAT system.© Atomic Energy Society of Japan.

Graph classification is an increasingly important step in numerous application domains, such as function prediction of molecules and proteins, computerised scene analysis, and anomaly detection in program flows. Among the various approaches proposed in the literature, graph classification based on frequent subgraphs is a popular branch: Graphs are represented as (usually binary) vectors, with components indicating whether a graph contains a particular subgraph that is frequent across the dataset. On large graphs, however, one faces the enormous problem that the number of these frequent subgraphs may grow exponentially with the size of the graphs, but only few of them possess enough discriminative power to make them useful for graph classification. Efficient and discriminative feature selection among frequent subgraphs is hence a key challenge for graph mining. In this article, we propose an approach to feature selection on frequent subgraphs, called CORK, that combines two central advantages. First, it optimizes a submodular quality criterion, which means that we can yield a near-optimal solution using greedy feature selection. Second, our submodular quality function criterion can be integrated into gSpan, the state-of-the-art tool for frequent subgraph mining, and help to prune the search space for discriminative frequent subgraphs even during frequent subgraph mining.

Development of a non-contact screening system for rapid medical inspection at a quarantine depot using a laser Doppler blood-flow meter, microwave radar and infrared thermography

In order to conduct fast screening of passengers with infections such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) or pandemic influenza at a quarantine depot, we developed a non-contact screening system with a self-produced program to conduct a human screening within five seconds, via a linear discriminant function from non-contact derived variables, i.e. palmer pulse derived from a laser Doppler blood-flow meter, respiration rate determined by a 10-GHz microwave radar, and facial temperature measured by a thermography. The system evaluation was conducted on seven healthy male subjects (231 years). In order to achieve a pseudo-infection condition, the subjects maintained an ergo-meter exercise load (100W, 10 minutes). Before (normal condition) and after (pseudo-infection condition) exercise, a significant linear discriminant function (p0.001) was determined to distinguish the pseudo-infection condition from the normal condition (Mahalanobis D-square=20.3, classification error rate5%). The proposed system appears promising for future application in fast screening of infection at a quarantine depot.
