The development of a non-contact screening system for rapid medical inspection at a quarantine depot using a laser Doppler blood-flow meter, microwave radar and infrared thermography

In order to conduct fast screening of passengers with infections such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) or pandemic influenza at a quarantine depot, we developed a non-contact screening system with self-produced program to conduct a human screening within five seconds, via a linear discriminant function from non-contact derived variables, i.e. palmer pulse derived from a laser Doppler blood-flow meter, respiration rate determined by a 10-GHz microwave radar, and facial temperature measured by thermography. The system evaluation was conducted on seven healthy male subjects (23 ± 1 years). In order to achieve a pseudo-infection condition, the subjects maintained an ergo-meter exercise load (100 W, 10 minutes). We propose a programmable and scalable traffic management scheme. programmable traffic management at high-speed routers is difficult because programmability and high-speed packet processing have involved a serious tradeoff. To attain both, the new scheme combines control programs at a control server and simple packet handling functions, such as sampling packet headers and discarding packets, at routers. Therefore, by installing appropriate control programs into the server, a variety of active queue management schemes, per-flow bandwidth management schemes, DoS mitigation schemes, and so on, are achieved. One of the main contributions of this paper is its proposal of a statistical scheme for handling flows. As only a fraction of complete flow information stored at the control server is loaded into the router's flow table and it is replaced cyclically, the proposed scheme scales more than the router's flow table capacity. Our simulation results indicate that the scheme provides efficient traffic management, per-flow WFQ emulation in our example, even with very small flow tables compared to the number of concurrently active flows. Furthermore, we discuss implementation issues with the proposed scheme and reveal that the processing cost at the server and router is sufficiently small for use with 10 Gbps links.

Changes of ICP waveform morphology are characterized with different patients' states like hypertension, hydrocephalus and traumatic brain injury etc. Morphological clustering and analysis of ICP pulse (MOCAIP) approach is recently developed to extract ICP morphology feature, in which hierarchical clustering is used to extract the dominated pulse. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of using principle component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA) to extract dominated pulse. The comparative study among clustering, PCA and ICP based approaches shows that PCA approach may be an alternative of clustering approach to extract dominated pulse in a faster fashion when dataset is of large size.

In petrochemistry, dicumyl peroxide (DCPO) is used in various resins for improving physical properties, which was produced by cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) with oxidization reaction, redox reaction, and dehydration reaction. The reactant, CHP, is a typical organic hydroperoxide and has been intrinsically unstable and reactive due to its bivalent -O-O- structure which can be broken readily with bond-dissociation energy. This sequence on sensitive study aimed at the thermal hazard evaluation for the reactive and incompatible characteristics of CHP mixed with various inorganic alkaline solutions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and vent sizing package 2 (VSP2) were used to analyze the thermal hazards and runaway reaction of redox system, such as decomposition of CHP in cumene solution and CHP react with inorganic alkaline solutions, exothermic onset temperature, peak power, heat of decomposition of dynamic scanning tests, adiabatic self-heating rate, pressure rise rate, maximum temperature, maximum pressure of reaction system, etc. The results of the tests have proven helpful in establishing safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal guidelines. © 2009 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.

The performance of a prototype RFID-wired NASA Cargo Transfer Bag (CTB), implementing the Rule-based analytic Asset management for Space Exploration systems (RAMSES) architecture, was recently tested in both standard and reduced gravity conditions. In addition to gravity, other experimental variables included the material of the test articles (paper, metal, or liquid) and the number of articles within the container at one time. As predicted by ground test results, the best read rates were observed during reduced-gravity flight, with metals detected at 100% accuracy, paper at 96%, and water at roughly 93%, when tests were conducted with 30 articles of the material in the "smart CTB". These results, while still at the prototype level, demonstrate that the system holds significant potential for future flight implementation on ISS and future human spaceflight outposts. The current software development environment has been changing into new development paradigms such as concurrent distributed development environment and the so-called open source project by using network computing technologies. Especially, OSS (Open Source Software) systems which serve as key components of critical infrastructures in our society are still ever-expanding now. However, poor handling of quality attainment and customer support prohibit the progress of OSS. We focus on the problems in low software quality that prohibit the progress of OSS. In case of considering the effect of the debugging process on an entire system in the development of a method of reliability assessment for open source project, it is necessary to grasp the deeply-intertwined factors, such as programming path, size of each component, skill of fault reporter, and so on. In order to consider the effect of each software component on the reliability of an entire system under such OSS development, we propose a new approach to software reliability assessment by creating a fusion of neural networks and the software reliability growth models. Also, it has been necessary to manage the software development process in terms of reliability, effort, and version-upgrade time. In this paper, we find the optimal version-upgrade time based on the total expected software maintenance effort by using our software reliability growth models. © 2008 Academy Publisher.

In some applications, as part of a mobile agent mission, there may be the necessity of meeting a firm end-to-end deadline, although with some itinerary flexibility due to optional resources. This paper proposes an execution model based on the concept of imprecise mobile agents with timing constraints. In this paper it is considered an execution model where agents do not previously know their itineraries. The imprecise mobile agent may choose among alternative and/or optional resources. The objective is to propose and to evaluate heuristics to be used individually or in pairs by imprecise mobile agents that must accomplish a mission within a firm deadline. © 2008 - IOS Press and the authors.
