This paper explores whether the sending of direct mail (DM) coupons via mobile phone increases the probability of beauty salon customers using a coupon when visiting the store. Customer research was conducted after the statistical analysis of an experiment in 2004, in which a mobile DM coupon did not positively affect customers' store visit probability, but a coupon sent on a postcard did. This research examines the promotional effects of three types of mobile DM coupon on the probability of shop visit, coupon use and additional service purchase by adding two types of mail that might induce customers to take an action for strengthening recall of receipt. The variable of mobile DM coupon availability was statistically significant on store visit. The variable of mobile DM coupon type was statistically significant on coupon use probability, with positive effects of hyperlink vs negative effect of ordinary mail or telephone reservation mail (ie ‘ordinary mail’, ‘hyperlink mail’ and ‘telephone reservation mail’).

Teaching engineering and technology subjects involves conveying understanding of abstract information structures and processes such as complex telecommunications protocols, complex mathematical concepts, and data structures. These are multidimensional and can be difficult to grasp quickly. Supported by a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Technology for Teaching grant, the School of engineering and Technology at National University has embarked on a project to enable students to grasp these complex concepts more quickly and easily, using continuous dialog among students and instructors as the structures are first introduced and then examined from multiple perspectives through real-time interaction among students, small groups, and instructors. HP Wireless Tablet PCs are used to discuss and experiment with diagrams and processes in realtime. This allows combining lectures and problem-solving sessions into a single class session. Our hypothesis is that: 1) an in-depth learning of theory is accomplished, and 2) student engagement is enhanced. Presentation of theory by the instructor is integrated with application while the theory is still in the student's short-term memory. Students no longer have to wait for a separate session such as a recitation session to apply the concepts. This approach often takes less time. In addition to accelerating the learning process, expert instructors find this approach more rewarding as students grasp new concepts more quickly. Analysis of data captured from both students and instructors are presented to support our hypotheses, and our results are compared with similar research carried out by other universities. In addition, the level of interaction enabled by the use of HP Tablets in on-line classes is discussed. The best teaching tools available in existing on-line teaching platforms are compared with the additional tools available in on-site courses when every student has a wireless Tablet PC and specific recommendations are made to on-line teachi

Sintered Fergusonites NdNbO4 and YNbO4 were prepared by the hot-press method and their density, bending strength, elastic properties, micro-Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, and damping properties were measured. The damping capacities of NdNbO4 and YNbO4 were 6-7 % at 1 × 10-3 of the maximum surface shear strain. They increased with the maximum surface shear strain and reached 17-20%. The damping capacities of NdNbO4 and YNbO4 exhibited the maximum at room temperature, and decreased with increasing temperature. These values of damping capacities were higher than those of other representative ceramics. The microplastic strain of NdNbO4 and YNbO4 was caused at 10-5 MPa of stress. High damping behaviors of NdNbO4 and YNbO4 were caused by internal friction due to the movement of dislocations and twins which were observed by transmission electron microscopy.

SLICE is a multi-year initiative at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) that is designed to embed service-learning opportunities for students throughout the undergraduate curriculum in the College of engineering, with the ultimate goal that each student would have at least one course every semester with a service-learning project. Since it began in 2004, thirty-seven full-time faculty members in the engineering college at UML have tried service-learning (S-L) in at least one of their courses over the last three years, out of an average of 70 faculty members who taught undergraduate courses. In 2003 there was one full-time faculty member engaged in S-L. As a result of SLICE, a total of 52 courses (35 of them required core undergraduate courses) taken by engineering students have had S-L integrated into them, with a total of over 700 student-courses each semester. This group of faculty members is perhaps the largest associated with a single engineering college using S-L. They were recruited in part by the principle of "start small rather than not at all." The program has a combination of grass-roots initiative and administration support. As part an ongoing evaluation, in depth interviews with fourteen faculty members who had tried SLICE were undertaken by experienced assessors of S-L projects from an outside university. All of the faculty members interviewed indicated that they saw SLICE as a valuable element in the engineeringprogram, based on their own experience. All saw it as adding important dimensions to the learning experience that were not available through traditional classroom exercises, and all believed that it was consistent with efforts to broaden students' understanding of both engineering and their role in society. Finally, though all noted challenges with regard to implementation, they also indicated that the integration of S-L was worth the extra effort that it often involved. One faculty member even said, "It will change the way we think ab

The integration of entrepreneurship and innovation into undergraduateengineering education has been found to enhance student performance and improve retention rates (Ohland, 2004). It also prepares graduating engineers to work in rapidly changing environments defined by a competitive global marketplace. Industry is asking for engineers with better communication and teamwork skills, and most importantly, a broader understanding of how to solve real world problems and create value in the marketplace. While some engineering schools are beginning to integrate entrepreneurship and business concepts into the curriculum, many ABET-accredited schools are slow to react to the needs of industry and the marketplace. Recognizing that this problem is threatening the quality of U.S. engineering talent, the Kern Family Foundation established the Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network (KEEN) with the mission to create an action-oriented, entrepreneurial mindset among engineering, science and technical undergraduates. The KEEN initiative, launched in 2005, represents a new and unique entrepreneurial approach to improving undergraduate education in the U.S. This paper shows how building an entrepreneurial ecosystem within and among engineering schools, as exemplified by KEEN, will provide a strong foundation for graduating engineers entering organizations operating in an innovation-based economy. Ecosystems can be defined as environments with interconnected relationships influenced by a variety of factors. An entrepreneurial ecosystem links people by vision, commitment, passion, and innovation surrounding the achievement of a common goal. The paper has five objectives: (1) establish the need for an innovative and entrepreneurial talent pool coming out of U.S. engineering schools;(2) identify critical skills and abilities that can be taught to fulfill this need;(3) describe KEEN from its inception, documenting how new and innovative entrepreneurship-based undergraduateengineering e

In this paper we present the architecture for the Personal Autonomic Desktop Manager, a self managing application designed to act on behalf of the user in several aspects: protection, healing, optimization and configuration. The overall goal of this research is to improve the correlation of the autonomic self* properties and doing so also enhance the overall self-management capacity of the desktop (autonomicity). We introduce the Circulatory Computing (CC) model, a self-managing system initiative based on the biological metaphor of the cardiovascular system, and use its concepts in the design and implementation of the architecture.
