Recommendation accuracy is especially important in mobile e-commerce environments due to the limited screen size of mobile devices and relatively expensive connection costs. Mobile content tends to be fashionable and are geared for young users. This paper presents a novel method of building a more accurate recommender system for mobile content in a mobile ecommerce environment. The method is based on collaborative filtering, and models content diffusion and user preference transition and incorporates them in constructing pseudo ratings from implicit feedback data. In a variety of experiments, recommender systems based on the method showed significantly better recommendation accuracy than a pure collaborative filtering-based recommender system.

This paper proposes a method to teach a robot interactively based on behavior primitives. Fuzzy voice commands are used to activate the behaviors in a fuzzy coach player system scenario. An intention control module is implemented in the interaction manager to handle the interactivity and a hierarchical behavior memory is introduced to store the learned behaviors. The proposed system is used to learn complex behaviors based on simple posture movements of a manipulator. The fuzzy voice joint commands are used to trigger the primitive behaviors which represent the single joint movements. The proposed method is demonstrated with a PA-10 robot manipulator.

This work aims to understand and model the inter-modal temporal relations between the audio and visual modalities of speech and validate whether the captured relations can improve the performance of audio-visual bimodal modeling for such applications as audio-visual speaker identification. We propose to extend our audio-visual correlative model (AVCM) with explicit durational modeling of the partial temporal synchrony between the two speech modalities, i.e. where the audio may lead, lag or remain synchronized with the video. We refer to the new extended model as Durational- AVCM. Experiments on the CMU database and a home- grown database demonstrate that Durational-AVCM can improve the accuracies of audio-visual speaker identification at all levels of acoustic signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) from 0dB to 30dB with varying acoustic conditions compared to original AVCM model. The results indicate the importance of incorporating the partial temporal synchrony between audio and visual modalities for audio-visual bimodal modeling.

We consider the optimal control of a production-inventory system with a single product and two customer classes where items are produced one unit at a time. Upon arrival, customer orders can be fulfilled from existing inventory, if there is any, backordered, or rejected. The two classes are differentiated by their backorder and lost sales costs. At each decision epoch, we must determine whether or not to produce an item and if so, whether to use this item to increase inventory or to reduce backlog. We must also determine whether or not to satisfy demand from a particular class (should one arise), backorder it, or reject it. We formulate the problem as a Markov decision process and use it to characterize the structure of the optimal policy. Using numerical results, we compare the performance of the optimal policy against several heuristics.

Requirements changes sometimes cause a project to fail. A lot of projects now follow incremental development processes so that new requirements and requirements changes can be incorporated as soon as *** processes are called integrated requirements processes which integrate requirements processes with other development processes. We have investigated the requirements processes of a project from beginning to end, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Our focus is to clarify the types of requirements based on the components contained within a certain portion of the software architecture. Each type reveals its typical requirements processes through its rationale. The case studied is a system to manage the orders and services of a restaurant. In this paper, we introduce the case and describe the types of requirements processes. Then we discuss the reasons why we could not elicit all the requirements in the early development processes.

The major questions addressed in this paper are: What is the optimal tradeoff between capital cost and downtime/reliability for a data center? How much redundancy is justified? Owners of data centers need to choose an engineering design to decide how much capital to spend in order to minimize the life cycle costs and maximize reliability. Data Center costs include the initial capital for building and equipment, electrical usage, equipment maintenance and periodic upgrades. Downtime can be measured in hours or in monetary terms. A case study will be presented to explore the problem of optimizing data center redundancy. Capital and operating estimates will be provided by a major engineering design firm. Downtime for each design was estimated by a nationally recognized source. An overall decision process is presented which combines cost and benefit estimates with economic and non-economic analyses to arrive at an optimal solution. Three decision process scenarios are identified that are caused by how downtime is measured and whether downtime is considered a dependent or independent attribute in the final decision. One scenario is presented in the paper that uses After Tax Analysis (ATA) to estimate the Life Cycle costs (EUAC) without downtime included and downtime (hours per year) as an independent variable. This scenario uses Cost Effective Analysis (CEA) as the decision analysis approach. The ATA decision process described could be used in an engineering economy course. The scenario could provide a practical example for when and how to use various Figures of Merit (FoMs) and associated decision processes. The case presented illustrates limitations in teaching engineering economics. One limitation is that decision processes like CEA and Multi-Attribute Analysis (MAA) are generally not taught to undergraduateengineering students;they are only covered in some graduateengineeringprograms. Yet, as this case illustrates, these techniques are important to select among va

This paper describes an approach for lip tracking using dynamic deformable templates. The objective is to track lip parameters from an audio-visual corpus recording a voice talent who is reading text prompts in a natural and expressive way. The corpus presents challenges to the conventional method of lip tracking with deformable templates. This is because natural and expressive speech includes relatively large motions of the head and the lips. The head motions lead to changes in the illumination of the face region and changes in the observed lip shape. In addition, emphatic pronunciations lead to large changes in the lip shape. Video frames that are affected by face illumination changes present additional difficulty in locating the mouth region (i.e. region of interest, ROI). Video frames that are affected by changes in lip shapes present additional deviations from the lip templates and hence lower tracking accuracies. Our proposed method incorporates "dynamicity" in the deformable templates to render them adaptive to changes in head pose, face illumination and lip shapes. Experiments show that dynamic deformable templates consistently outperform the conventional deformable templates in lip tracking.
