The major questions addressed in this paper are: What is the optimal tradeoff between capital cost and downtime/reliability for a data center? How much redundancy is justified? Owners of data centers need to choose an engineering design to decide how much capital to spend in order to minimize the life cycle costs and maximize reliability. Data Center costs include the initial capital for building and equipment, electrical usage, equipment maintenance and periodic upgrades. Downtime can be measured in hours or in monetary terms. A case study will be presented to explore the problem of optimizing data center redundancy. Capital and operating estimates will be provided by a major engineering design firm. Downtime for each design was estimated by a nationally recognized source. An overall decision process is presented which combines cost and benefit estimates with economic and non-economic analyses to arrive at an optimal solution. Three decision process scenarios are identified that are caused by how downtime is measured and whether downtime is considered a dependent or independent attribute in the final decision. One scenario is presented in the paper that uses After Tax Analysis (ATA) to estimate the Life Cycle costs (EUAC) without downtime included and downtime (hours per year) as an independent variable. This scenario uses Cost Effective Analysis (CEA) as the decision analysis approach. The ATA decision process described could be used in an engineering economy course. The scenario could provide a practical example for when and how to use various Figures of Merit (FoMs) and associated decision processes. The case presented illustrates limitations in teaching engineering economics. One limitation is that decision processes like CEA and Multi-Attribute Analysis (MAA) are generally not taught to undergraduate engineering students;they are only covered in some graduate engineering programs. Fatigued bills have harmful influence on daily operation of Automated Teller Machine(ATM). To make the fatigued bills classification more efficient, development of an automatic fatigued bill classification method is desired. We propose a new method to estimate bending rigidity of bill from acoustic signal feature of banking machines. The estimated bending rigidities are used as continuous fatigue level for classification of fatigued bill. By using the supervised Self-Organizing Map (supervised SOM), we estimate the bending rigidity from only the acoustic energy pattern effectively. The experimental result with real bill samples shows the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2008 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper describes an approach for lip tracking using dynamic deformable templates. The objective is to track lip parameters from an audio-visual corpus recording a voice talent who is reading text prompts in a natural and expressive way. The corpus presents challenges to the conventional method of lip tracking with deformable templates. This is because natural and expressive speech includes relatively large motions of the head and the lips. The head motions lead to changes in the illumination of the face region and changes in the observed lip shape. In addition, emphatic pronunciations lead to large changes in the lip shape. Video frames that are affected by face illumination changes present additional difficulty in locating the mouth region (i.e. region of interest, ROI). Video frames that are affected by changes in lip shapes present additional deviations from the lip templates and hence lower tracking accuracies. Our proposed method incorporates "dynamicity" in the deformable templates to render them adaptive to changes in head pose, face illumination and lip shapes. Experiments show that dynamic deformable templates consistently outperform the conventional deformable templates in lip tracking.

A 3D gesture language recognition system was developed so that we can help the hearing disabled to communicate with normal people easily. There are three major parts included in the system. First of all, we implemented a pair of data gloves which can acquire the different datum of bending fingers, palm orientations and moving trajectories. Secondly, we designed a control box with USB/RS232 plug & play interface to transfer the information of both hands to PC. Finally, we finished the 3D gesture language recognition program with fuzzy and neural network algorithms in LabVIEW language. After finishing the hand movement of each word by gesture language every time, computer will show the recognition result on the monitor with 3D Studio MAX multimedia display and voice output. In order to prove the performance of the 3D gesture language recognition system, we also finished the recognition tests for the static gesture language of 26 of English letters A ∼ Z and some dynamic gesture language words. The successful recognition rate of the system is above 90%. We'll set up the more complete database of Taiwanese gesture language step by step. We believe that the more gesture language words built in database, the more feasible the 3D gesture language recognition system will be. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

New robotic systems will be playing an essential role in the future dismantling service for renewing office interiors facilities in buildings. In our study, the dismantling task would be achieved by proper collaboration between human workers and robots utilizing mobile arms, interface devices and software. This paper describes an overview of the proposed dismantling system as well as its requirements. The real experiments presented are focused on the disassembling task of a ceiling lamp panel (LP). In the disassembling task, a robot arm collaborates with the human worker holding the LP, accomplishing an assisting function. At first, in order to approach the robot to the holding position, the worker controls the robot using interface devices which are also evaluated in their usability aspect. Then, a laser pointer fixed at the robot's tip is used both as a guidance in the teleoperation process and as a first indicator of the holding position. As a second step toward the target, the control program applies model-based 3D object recognition techniques to calculate the final position. At this stage the information of an stereo camera, configured as an eye-in-hand system, is necessary. On the last part of the task, the robot reaches the estimated position automatically by using the results of its kinematic analysis. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

In this paper we present the architecture for the Personal Autonomic Desktop Manager, a self managing application designed to act on behalf of the user in several aspects: protection, healing, optimization and configuration. The overall goal of this research is to improve the correlation of the autonomic self{sup}* properties and doing so also enhance the overall self-management capacity of the desktop (autonomicity). We introduce the Circulatory Computing (CC) model, a self-managing system initiative based on the biological metaphor of the cardiovascular system, and use its concepts in the design and implementation of the architecture.

In this paper,we are concerned with the fast solvers for higher order edge finite element discretizations of Maxwell's *** present the preconditioners for the first family and second family of higher order N′ed′elec element equations,*** combining the stable decompositions of two kinds of edge finite element spaces with the abstract theory of auxiliary space preconditioning,we prove that the corresponding condition numbers of our preconditioners are uniformly bounded on quasi-uniform *** also present some numerical experiments to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Nanocomposite enameled wires have been developed for inverter-fed random wound motor windings, however, partial discharge (PD) characteristics is still underlying physics. In this study, effects of environmental conditions on PD characteristics in twisted pairs with conventional and nanocomposite enameled magnet wires were investigated. Measurements of the PD inception voltage (PDIV) and an amount of the PD charge were performed by applying an ac sinusoidal waveform voltage of 60 Hz to the twisted pair. The observed PDIV in this study can be classified into the following three behaviors. First, the PDIV in both wires decreases with increasing relative humidity (RH) at low temperature. Secondly, the PDIV in both wires slightly increases when increasing the RH at high temperature. Thirdly, the PDIV in the conventional enameled wire significantly decreases at 95%RH, while the decrease rate of that in the nanocomposite enameled wire is relatively small. The observed PD phenomena are discussed in terms of material characterization of the enameled wires such as changes in permittivity due to moisture absorption and wettability under voltage application.

This paper provides an application of a consensus problem with nonlinear performance functions to resource allocation in soft real-time systems. In soft real-time systems, fairness of QoS (Quality of Service) levels plays an important role to guarantee appropriate service under timing and resource constraints. We propose fair QoS control with an agent-based controller where each agent manages an allocated resource and a QoS level of each task. We derive an adaptive resource allocation algorithm and sufficient conditions to achieve fair QoS levels by extending results of a consensus problem.
