This paper presents the analysis and design optimization of a new compact and yet economical micro-nano two-fingered manipulator hand. The proposed manipulator hand consists of two series modules; upper and lower module. Each module consists of a parallel kinematics chain with a glass pipette of 3 to 10 cm length as an end effector. It is driven by three piezoelectric actuated prismatic joints in each of the three legs of the kinematics chain. Each leg of the kinematics chain has the structure of prismatic-revolute-socket ball (PRS) joints structure. As the length of the glass pipette end effector is decreased, the resolution and accuracy of the micro-nano manipulator hand is increased. A new solution for the problem of inverse kinematics is obtained. Based on this solution, a simulation program has been developed to optimally choose the design parameters of each module so that the manipulator have a maximum workspace volume. Also the manipulator hand is small in size due to the proposed architecture.

This paper presents the READING (retrieving news around the world for discovery and knowledge mining) system, which is a self sufficient system for aggregating and classifying news from around the world with a focus on Asia. The system, however, goes beyond the traditional news aggregation sites by mining information and knowledge from the news articles to aid in such tasks as decision making. The system is able to collect, classify and mine knowledge automatically without the need for an editor or intervention by an administrator. Average users, news professionals and researchers alike will find that the system offers something for them. This paper focuses on the underlying algorithms in the system and how they interact in creating the overall system.

The department of Technology systems (TSYS) at East Carolina University has implemented a new faculty mentoring process to enable junior faculty members to learn from senior faculty members as they prepare for a career in academia. Five tenured professors and associate professors in the TSYS department have recently established a new process to mentor faculty members within the department who have begun not yet completed their initial tenure process at a major university. This process includes a series of workshops regarding academic performance expectations during the early stages of an academic career. Our commitment to new faculty takes on several related, yet distinct features. Examples of these initiatives include: 1) reduced workloads for new faculty for the first two years to enable them to generate individual and collaborative research activities, funded grants, and publications, 2) periodic university-wide training to learn policies and procedures that affect day-to-day activities on a college campus, 3) periodic workshops hosted by senior faculty mentors, and 4) one-on-one discussions between senior faculty members and junior faculty members to encourage candid dialogue between professional colleagues. Another feature of the mentorship philosophy is a proposal to the dean of the college to offer newly hired faculty a contractual start date of July 1steach year instead of starting their contract one week prior to the start of fall classes, normally in late August. This additional period of time will be used to train new faculty in essential policies and procedures, to complete a variety of administrative tasks on campus, to get a head start on preparing for classes in the fall, and cleaning up those supplemental tasks that accompany every move to a new location. The goal of this early commitment to new faculty is to reduce the stress associated with preparing for a new course, in a new environment, with a new set of operating procedures. This will also enab

In the present paper, we consider a practical identification of the opening-and-closing speed dynamics of an elevator door. It is important to obtain the actual state of an elevator door for retaining a safety and quick motion. Thus, an identification of the above dynamics is also one of the most important factors for an effective maintenance. However, it is difficult to obtain the actual parameter because of the fact that there are many cases in which an experiment for the identification spends much time and it is undesirable to use a sufficiently excited signal for the identification. These problems should be solved with practical points of view. From these motivative backgrounds, we provide a facile and fast-track identification method for the opening-and-closing speed dynamics of an elevator door. Since the method we proposed here is based on the adaptation of “the fictitious controller” off-line, it is possible to obtain relevant parameters with only one-shot experiment data obtained in the usual operation, which also leads to reduce the cost for the maintenance drastically. In order to show the validity of the result, we also give an experimental result on the identification of the opening-and-closing speed dynamics of the door of an elevator.

In this work, we propose a network-based approach to cluster the protein pockets into similar groups in a database level. A pocket similarity network is constructed to describe structural similarity relationships among the pockets from the systematic perspective, which possesses the community structures and can can be utilized to develop a direct method to cluster the pockets by partitioning the network to small communities, which correspond to pocket groups individually. As a first step, we join the pockets into structurally similar pocket groups via a hierarchical process guided by maximizing a widely used modularity measurement Q. Then we analyze the functional similarity underlying every divided pocket groups. As a result most of the pockets in the same group are identified to share similar functions. These results show that our clustering method is effective and efficient to reveal biologically meaningful pocket groups regard to functional consistence.

In the past it has been difficult to implement lean supply chain management in construction because one entity does not have control over an entire supply chain. This research investigates supply chain practices at GS engineering & Construction in Korea. The purpose of this case study is to explore the lean application on rebar supply chain management practice at GS. The paper discusses vertical integration in the supply system to reduce lead time and to improve a supplier's reliability. It also discusses production control system and task standardization for a contractor's planning reliability.

Technopolis communities are sprouting up all over the world and are creating a profound impact on global economic landscapes. Today's global economy can be characterized by increasing globalization, heightened interdependency and the emergence of a new paradigm of regional, institutional and technological clusters which facilitate innovation and its commercialization called the "Technopolis Phenomenon". This paper reviews research done on creation of Technopolis communities and highlights exemplary best practices from Technopolis communities around the world such as Silicon Valley, Boston, Austin, Ireland, Bangalore, Taiwan, Sophia-Antipolis, and others. The role of academia-industry-government collaboration in creation of Technopolis communities is discussed in detail. This involves sustained, collaborative efforts by academics, industry representatives, Entrepreneur Support Organizations (ESOs), Economic Development Organizations (EDOs), engineers, entrepreneurs, investors, and other practitioners to develop initiatives, plans, methodologies, infrastructure, and action items for Technopolis creation. The authors' experiences in attempting to create a Technopolis community in Central Florida from Florida Tech on the Space Coast, through UCF and the Orlando Metropolis to USF and Tampa on the Gulf Coast to add experiential insights for program implementation and effectiveness. engineering education programming linking academic / continuing education programs with experiential entrepreneurship and community outreach activities is emphasized.
