To assist GK-12 teachers in their effort to improve science and math instruction, the STARS (Students, Teachers and Resources in the Sciences) program from the University of South Florida has developed a science training plan for teachers in the 3-5 band. STARS is a National Science Foundation project, which aims to promote systemic change in primary grade levels by enriching the math and science courses and by encouraging long-term professional development for the teachers. This paper discusses the tools employed to facilitate the integration of advanced concepts, such as materials science and nanotechnology, into the teacher curriculum through training modules. The modules were designed to target a population of lead science and math teachers. The main objective of the training program is to form and mature lead teachers that will disseminate to other elementary science educators the advanced science modules, and will provide the necessary in-class support during the implementation phase

This paper describes the research and development of the two compact vision systems for real-time cell detection and manipulation in the capillary in order to apply on the "desktop bioplant" project which will achieve sort of cell manipulation tasks such as positioning, cutting, sizing, and so on, automatically between different interconnected modules. The first prototype vision system with sufficient magnification and image resolution has been designed to be boarded onto the PDMS chip. Design schema and preliminary experimental results of first proposed system have been also given. A second system with a commercially available small size and light-weight microscope unit has also been prototyped to be integrated under microfluidic channel. The integration of two models with desktop bioplant could bring a good solution to automation of the cell manipulation including nuclear transportation. While the size and weight of the total systems are decreased to provide portability and compatibility, determining the position and management of an egg-cell in a capillary has vital importance for the automation of nuclear transportation in a capillary with using micro robotics

Artificial neural networks can be trained to predict outcomes in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This paper expands on past research and shows that neural networks trained by the maximum likelihood estimation criterion will approximate the `a posteriori probability' of NICU mortality. A gradient ascent method for the weight update of three-layer feed-forward neural networks was derived. The neural networks were trained on NICU data and the results were evaluated by performance measurement techniques, such as the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. The resulting models applied as mortality prognostic screening tools are presented

In 2005, the department of Defense completed its fifth round of base realignment and closure (BRAC). This process involved analytically determining the military value (MV) of an installation and then ranking all installations based on MV scores. These rankings were used to determine which installations would be closed or realigned, subject to meeting minimum Army requirements for maintaining certain functions. In 2005, the MV score for an installation was derived as a weighted sum of the installation's score over a set of forty attributes. This paper describes the methods we used in analyzing these attributes, our goal being to identify the attributes that had the greatest impact on the installation rankings. From our analysis, we developed recommendations on which attributes should be kept for future BRAC proceedings, as well as those that could be considered for revision

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems consist of Electric Tags, or transponders, and RF tag readers, or transceivers. Auto-tags of the RFID system have the unique ID feature and are capable of carrying information, which adds the tags more capability of which could be read only or read/write. RFID systems are now being used by more and more organizations connected with management, tracing, and control. The deficiencies of the current entrance control system of an apartment or a high class community are that the remote control unit can be easily copied and the security guards may not pay full attention to their work. Therefore, the outside incomers can enter into the parking lot easily and cause a lot of problems. The purpose of this study was to develop a RFID system coupling with the current entrance system and to update the present capacity of the security system. The entrance can be opened automatically by using the new control system because each car having hung the Auto-tag inside the car itself will be checked carefully. The license information can be seen on the screen of the computer by Digital Video and by executing the new software developed in this study. The development of this new control system using systemsengineering procedure intends to bring the advantage of time saving and reduced risk using RFID technology. systemsengineering procedure contains a life cycle that includes the needs, conceptual design, preliminary design, detail design, development, logistic support, and maintenance. systemsengineering procedure, when coupled with RFID technology, reveals optimal opportunities for bringing the new product into being that will be more cost-effective and more competitive in the industry. Blanchard and Fabrycky's procedure was selected in this study. With the method of systemsengineering, the requirement analysis, function analysis, allocation and system design were executed to proceed for the product framework. Furthermore, they effective

The local heat transfer measurements in the cooling flow passage having both flat surface and semi-cylindrically grooved surface geometries inside the automobile disc brake were made. A uniform wall heat flux boundary condition on both surface geometries was created using gold film Intrex. Liquid crystal was used to measure the surface temperature. The experiments were made at Reynolds number (based on the hydraulic diameter of the rectangular duct) of Re=23,000, groove pitch-to-width (P/D) from 3 to 7, and groove depth-to-width (H/D) from 0.15 to 0.2. The results show that the magnitudes in the average Nusselt number on the grooved surface are maximum 92.8% higher than those on the flat surface without groove. A computer program utilizing the coupled FEM numerical technique that can predict the temperature distributions on the disc brake to analyze the thermal deformation has been developed.

One of the key operations for P2P systems is to locate the requested resources. The efficiency of the operation depends heavily on application routing. Although many P2P systems had been proposed, they are not well suited for heterogeneous networks which consist of both wired and wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a new application routing protocol called DRIP (double-layered ring-based routing protocol). In DRIP, boundary nodes are employed to construct the P2P network. As shown in the experimental results, DRIP has proved it scalable and has low traffic overhead and latency

Experimenting with effects based operations involves integrating planning across diverse domains and spanning local to global scopes. Providing a comprehensive planning framework requires a shift from the traditional, single-scope, military strategy experiments and tactics simulations. An integrated planning environment is a manysided approach that allows a user to plan the actions of any entity in the environment, such as a national government, a military force at a given echelon, a key leader, or an organization, and design comprehensive campaigns encompassing diplomatic, information, military, and economic strategies. An integrated planning and experimentation environment facilitates planning at various levels of granularity, composing plans into playbooks, storing playbooks in a shared database, rapidly composing a course of action (COA) from shared playbooks, using COAs to instantiate an experiment, analyzing simulation results with respect to desired goals of a COA, and then further refining the plans based on analysis. Underlying the planning environment are the Experiment Manager (ExMan) and Extensible Net Assessment (xNA), used to instantiate an experiment in order to execute a COA. ExMan configures an experiment with a geographical region, selection of entities and models to include in the synthetic environment, simulations to integrate, data sources to involve, and set of plans to execute. Information relevant to the configuration is pulled from xNA to initialize the simulations for the experiment. The runtime simulation technology consists of the Synthetic Environments for Analysis and Simulation, the Integrated Gaming System, and a Society of systems (SoS) that integrates the simulations into a single experimentation environment. A SoS also enables other simulations and components to join a pre-existing society. This paper describes an example of how an Integrated Planning and Experimentation framework was implemented to enable experiments studying plan
