Experimenting with effects based operations involves integrating planning across diverse domains and spanning local to global scopes. Providing a comprehensive planning framework requires a shift from the traditional, single-scope, military strategy experiments and tactics simulations. An integrated planning environment is a manysided approach that allows a user to plan the actions of any entity in the environment, such as a national government, a military force at a given echelon, a key leader, or an organization, and design comprehensive campaigns encompassing diplomatic, information, military, and economic strategies. An integrated planning and experimentation environment facilitates planning at various levels of granularity, composing plans into playbooks, storing playbooks in a shared database, rapidly composing a course of action (COA) from shared playbooks, using COAs to instantiate an experiment, analyzing simulation results with respect to desired goals of a COA, and then further refining the plans based on analysis. Underlying the planning environment are the Experiment Manager (ExMan) and Extensible Net Assessment (xNA), used to instantiate an experiment in order to execute a COA. ExMan configures an experiment with a geographical region, selection of entities and models to include in the synthetic environment, simulations to integrate, data sources to involve, and set of plans to execute. Information relevant to the configuration is pulled from xNA to initialize the simulations for the experiment. The runtime simulation technology consists of the Synthetic Environments for Analysis and Simulation, the Integrated Gaming System, and a Society of systems (SoS) that integrates the simulations into a single experimentation environment. A SoS also enables other simulations and components to join a pre-existing society. Various power trading system models have been proposed, but many of them will not aim at load reduction by making customers cooperate with power suppliers in a power trading market. Some researches tried to solve the problem by introducing reward in the power market. This approach was developed on an evaluation function, but it must estimate customers’ evaluation functions beforehand. Then, this paper proposes a new approach to cope with various kinds of customers by modeling a power market on a satisfaction space. In addition, we have built the proposed system as a Web application on the Internet.

This is commonly thought that CASE tools reduce programming efforts and increase development productivity. However, no paper has provide quantitative data supporting the matter. This paper discusses productivity improvement through the use of an integrated CASE tool system named EAGLE (Effective Approach to Achieving High Level Software Productivity), as shown by various data collected in Hitachi from the 1980s to the 2000s. We have evaluated productivity by using three metrics, 1) program generation rate using reusable program skeletons and components, 2) fault density at two test phase, and 3) learning curve for the education of inexperienced programmers. We will show that productivity has been improved by the various facilities of EAGLE. Copyright © 2006 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

In this paper we consider the problem of testing some linear hypotheses in an extended growth curve model which is described for the data set of k clusters. The model includes the one whose mean structure consists of polynomial growth curves with k different degrees. First we derive likelihood ratio tests for adequacy of the extended growth curve model. Next we consider to test a general linear hypothesis of the parameter matrix for each of k clusters. In general, we propose to use Wald type test. However, likelihood ratio tests are derived for two important special cases. It is shown that the null distributions of our likelihood ratio statistics can be expressed as products of independent lambda statistics. We also give a numerical example. We demonstrate, for the first time, micromechanical detection of the neurotransmitter dopamine and its discrimination from ascorbic acid. Microcantilever sensors were fabricated and coated with the polysaccharide chitosan by electrodeposition. The cantilevers were used for electrochemical oxidation of dopamine solution. The products of this reaction crosslink the chitosan film and create a tensile stress, bending the cantilever out of plane considerably. By contrast, electrochemical oxidation of ascorbic acid solution does not cause chitosan crosslinking and appreciable cantilever bending. This method is an improvement over conventional electrochemical dopamine detection techniques (e.g. cyclic voltammetry) that are highly non-specific. © 2006 Society for Chemistry and Micro-Nano systems.

This subject, Urban Wet-Weather Flows, is comprised of three basic subareas - combined-sewer overflows (CSOs), sanitary-sewer overflows (SSOs), and stormwater discharges. Major proceedings related to wet-weather flow (WWF) published during 2005 were the following: (1) WEFTEC 2005, 78th Annual Conference and Exposition (WEF, 2005);(2) Effective Modeling of Urban Stormwater systems, Monograph 13 (CHI, 2005);and (3) 2005 Watershed management Conference - Managing Watersheds for Human and Natural Impacts (EWRI, 2005). In addition to the conferences listed above, the 2005 Annual Conference of the American Water Resources Association, EWRI's World Environment and Water Resources Congress the 10thInternational Conference on Urban Drainage had significant sessions on wet-weather flows. In addition, many regional conferences also had significant sessions on wet-weather flow issues, such as the 2005 Pennsylvania Stormwater management Symposium. E-learning becomes a very important part in one's learning progress especially in self-learning. In recent years, ubiquitous systems can even support the learning progress in real world, not only on PCs and mobile phones. Even mobile devices can be taken with a learner in everyday life, to provide more effective supports, the cooperation with ubiquitous devices such as sensors and embedded computers is necessary. With the improvement of ubiquitous technology, more and more services and supports can be provided to learners. However, learning systems have an important function: helping the learner improve his ability. In this paper, we present a method that can observe a learner's behaviors by a ubiquitous environment and decide supports based on shaping principles. As a case study, we designed a ubiquitous gym for users who have some special purposes such as physical training or diet. The system can grasp a learner's training actions and compare them with training requirements, and help the learner modify the behaviors and training plans based on shaping principle.

Modeling and simulation (M&S) has been described as one of the key enabling technologies of the 21st century. M&S has been applied to a wide range of operational problems. Supply chain management is an important aspect of operations for some organizations, and it is not surprising that M&S is being applied increasingly to solve supply problems. This article presents a case study of using M&S as a supply chain management tool for a military recapitalization program. It details the model development process, identifies the model's functionality and verification method, and demonstrates an application of an M&S tool to aid in the supply chain management of an Army aviation recapitalization program.

Achievement of a sustainable future implies a collaborative effort between a variety of stakeholders including industry, government, and academia. We are traveling in unfamiliar waters where the course is not always clear and the goals are sometimes daunting. To develop the environmental wisdom we need to help us know the "right answers" we must bring together the knowledge we get from our academic pursuits with the experience we obtain through trial and error. Bringing together the academic world and the business world not only helps us solve the immediate engineering need, it more importantly builds a partnership that will produce greater lasting value through students (future employees) who are attuned to the market demands for improved environmental performance in both business practices and products. This paper describes a new collaborative effort between Steelcase, Inc. and Kettering University that will prepare future engineers, managers, scientists, and policy makers for a workplace that places greater emphasis on conducting business within a framework of environmental and social responsibility. Since its founding in 1912, Steelcase, Inc. has approached its business from a "values driven" perspective focused on the underlying premise of how a responsible business should conduct itself. As such, Steelcase Inc. has been a leading company in promoting sustainable business practices both within the corporation and among a variety of other constituents. Kettering University (formerly GMI engineering and management Institute) has been preparing engineers and managers for the workforce since 1919, emphasizing the importance of leadership, integrity, and practical experience as the keys to success in the workplace. Together these organizations, along with other partners, are committed to demonstrating the practical need for enhanced education in issues of sustainability and social responsibility. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.
