ABET accreditation is the established benchmark for undergraduateengineeringprograms in the United States, yet there are but four accredited undergraduateengineeringmanagementprograms and one accredited engineeringmanagement technology program in the United States. This apparent paradox results from the many elements, characteristics, and factors contributing to successful accreditation. The scarcity of accredited programs is a concern to the engineeringmanagement discipline and a question to be dealt with. ABET accredited since 1992, Stevens Institute of Technology presently has a relatively large, well established engineeringmanagement (EM) program. Its success is evidenced by the size of its faculty (15 full-time faculty) and external recognition (3 awards from the American Society of engineeringmanagement [ASEM] over the past 15 years). The University of the Pacific, by contrast, has a very small engineeringmanagementprogram (1 full-time dedicated faculty) that just received ABET accreditation in 2003. This program also received ASEM's 2004 Founder's Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership for undergraduateprograms. This article compares and contrasts the accreditation processes in place at the engineeringmanagementprograms at Stevens Institute of Technology and the University of Pacific. Among the factors considered most central to their accreditation success are the project and people management skills inherent to the discipline of engineeringmanagement. These skills provide the basis for a plethora of successful accreditation-focused activities within an EM program. Examples of activities leading toward accreditation and recommendations of how colleges and universities can implement similar processes are discussed.

The multi-stage, multi-machine capacitated lot-sizing problem (MSMMCLSP) consists of scheduling the production of one product in a multi-machine production system with a multi-stage structure. This study first proposes an improved heuristic for the MSMMCLSP under deterministic demand over a finite planning horizon. Eliminating overloads by shifting the end item (e.g., all components) backward to a past period or forward to a future period, it uses Wagner-Whitin/lot-for-lot rescheduling to ensure schedule feasibility and uses an improving procedure to improve the scheduling of components in lower stages of production. Preliminary examination, however, revealed that this does not always optimize production schedules as well as the heuristic of Franca et al.[l] does. We therefore developed an integrated heuristic that guarantees a better solution for general MSMMCLSP by combining the heuristic of Franca et al. and the improved heuristic. We also evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed heuristics by using a simulation test with various planning parameters.
Motivated by the incentive programs that have been offered by energy companies under tight market conditions in the past few years, we consider a production control problem in which time alternates randomly between pe...

The University of Missouri Rolla's engineeringmanagement and systemsengineeringdepartment has developed a graduate Certificate program in Project management that offers an opportunity for professionals to expand their project management knowledge through a flexible graduate education program. The introduction of this certificate was motivated by the increasing demand for postgraduate education in this area. The distance education program is designed to fit around the work, travel and family demands of the busy technical professional. The certificate provides a solid foundation in the methods and practices of project management and provides information that can be immediately applied to managing projects in the work place. The certificate consists of three engineeringmanagement courses in project management and one course in economic analysis.

For the first time, the technical program for the American Society for engineeringmanagement (ASEM) in 2005 was conducted on the web. A Web-based application was developed to upload abstracts and papers, conduct peer reviews, and provide authors with feedback. In this paper, we provide an overview of the software application, its requirements and capabilities.

In this paper, we review methods for assessing and managing the risk of extreme events, where “extreme events” are defined to be rare, severe, and outside the normal range of experience of the system in question. First, we discuss several systematic approaches for identifying possible extreme events. We then discuss some issues related to risk assessment of extreme events, including what type of output is needed (e.g., a single probability vs. a probability distribution), and alternatives to the probabilistic approach. Next, we present a number of probabilistic methods. These include : guidelines for eliciting informative probability distributions from experts; maximum entropy distributions; extreme value theory; other approaches for constructing prior distributions (such as reference or noninformative priors); the use of modeling and decomposition to estimate the probability (or distribution) of interest; and bounding methods. Finally, we briefly discuss several approaches for managing the risk of extreme events, and conclude with recommendations and directions for future research.

Sensitivity analysis of capital investments can be effectively carried out by employing a metamodel approach and experimental designs. Although polynomial regression metamodels are popular and straightforward, they do not consider spatial relationships among the data. Dual kriging is an estimation technique that allows the incorporation of spatial correlation into the interpolation or estimation process and has been used primarily in geophysical statistical analysis. This article investigates the dual kriging approach as an alternative technique to polynomial regression and artificial neural networks for metamodel analysis of capital investments. It is observed that dual kriging shows potential in performing sensitivity analysis as its accuracy is as good as, or better than, other techniques, and, while model building and interpretation is more complicated than that of polynomial regression, it is significantly more straightforward than that of neural networks. Furthermore, this is the first known work of using kriging in the field of engineering economics;there may be other useful applications such as in cost estimation.

This report proposes a double simulated annealing (DSA) for functional magnetic resonance image (fMRI) analysis. The first simulated annealing (SA) is used to disconnect the brain from the skull. The second SA is applied to locate the activation area of the fMRIs. The performance evaluation of this approach includes receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, similarity analysis, and comparisons with other analytical methods such as classical SA (CSA), a t-Test, cross-correlation (CCR), and a general linear model (GLM). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can get better solutions than other approaches.

For Internet-based tele operation systems, user-friendly natural interfaces are advantageous because those systems are intended to be used by non-experts. In developing user friendly interfaces, natural language communication is mandatory. This paper presents a system in which a sub-set of natural language is used to command a tele-robot manipulator doing an object sorting task. The paper discusses about referring to objects with natural language commands such as "pick the small red cube". This is achieved by learning individual lexical symbols that refer to colors, shapes, and sizes independently, and then inferring the meaning of a combination of them.
