Knowledge management (KM) has become an important term in the construction industry. Knowledge management involves creating, securing, capturing, coordinating, combining, retrieving and distributing knowledge. The knowledge can be reused and shared among the involved engineers and experts to improve the construction process and reduce the time and cost of solving problems. Sharing and reusing knowledge depends on acquiring and preserving both tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge as the property of a corporation. This study addresses application of knowledge management in the construction phase of construction projects and proposes a construction map-based knowledge management (MBKM) concept and system for general contractors. This paper proposes a practical methodology to capture and represent construction project knowledge by using knowledge map. Using knowledge maps, users can get an overview of available and missing knowledge in core project areas and take appropriate management in tacit and explicit knowledge. Also, a portal system is developed to assist and present project-related knowledge by providing keyword and map search. The MBKM system is then applied in a case study of a construction precast office building in Taiwan to verify our proposed methodology and demonstrate the effectiveness of sharing knowledge special in the construction phase. By effectively using information and web technologies during the construction phase of a project, knowledge can be captured and managed to benefit future projects. The combined results demonstrate that, an MBKM-like system can be an effective tool for all experts and engineers participating for construction projects by utilizing the knowledge management concept and web technology.

In this paper, we mainly focus on a communication mechanism which enables efficient information publishing and sharing among semantic desktops. We propose MyPortal as a "one stop" for all the information relevant to the user and further propose the conceptual architecture of a P2P community Web information retrieval system based on MyPortal. This architecture enables not only precise location of My-Portal instances and their Web resources but also the automatic or semiautomatic integration of hybrid semantic information delivered through Web content and Web services, and it also ensures that the semantics will not be lost during any part of the lifecycle of the information retrieval process.

Outsourcing more of the design and production than before, manufacturers increasingly take on the role of systems integrators and collaborate with "design chain" partners to bring a new product to market. The purpose of this paper is to provide a preliminary study that applies the concept of activity overlapping to accelerate design chain activities in order to improve the time to market. An activity overlapping model adapted from the literature is used to determine the optimal overlapping time and the number of information exchanges required to minimize the development lead-time between two dependent activities. Two parametric functions are proposed to model information evolution and iteration sensitivity for upstream and downstream activities. The impacts of activity overlapping on development lead-time can be thoroughly analyzed for different combinations of evolutions and sensitivities. Several strategies for managing design chain to improve the time to market are also discussed.
Pipes of a plant should be properly managed, since corrosion of pipes cause leakage of dangerous material. But, the management is a hard and costly job. Though the pipes are maintained costly, the ratio of really corr...

The Industrial engineering and managementsystemsdepartment at the University of Central Florida has incorporated service experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum within a Total Quality Improvement course. This graduate level course teaches the Six Sigma body of knowledge, including quality management principles and problem solving tools. It provides just-in-time experiential learning opportunities to reinforce the in-class instruction. This paper will provide examples of Six Sigma tools applied in the project case studies including Voice of the Customer, Design of Experiments, and Benchmarking.

In this paper, we make the case for an integrated systems approach to the design and implementation of Extravehicular Activity (EVA). We define the EVA system as the set of hardware that enables EVA including the spacesuit, airlock, tools and mobility aids, as well as personnel and intangibles such as training, procedures, and software. In the context of planetary EVA, the system expands to include a rover, dust mitigation devices, and scientific instruments. The EVA system is in fact a complex, system-of-systems. The traditional approach to EVA system design optimizes each individual component, and may introduce inefficiencies into the system, generate logistics and supply management problems, and create hardware legacies that are hard to change and upgrade. We propose an integrated systems approach for advanced EVA system design that seeks to optimize the overall system, rather than just the individual pieces of hardware. The integrated systems approach also designs for uncertainty by anticipating change. By considering the complete system and allowing for change, the integrated systems approach incorporates both systems-of-systems thinking and spiral development. We examine the development of the Shuttle spacesuit and illustrate the challenges designers faced in adapting the suit to changing requirements. We conclude that due to the uncertain nature of exploration-class EVA, a system designed with the integrated systems approach offers significant advantages over the traditional design approach.

This paper documents the development and implementation of STARS (Students, Teachers, And Resources in the Sciences) a unique graduate Fellowship program at the University of South Florida that targets the K-5 school environment. Sponsored by NSF's GK-12 program, the USF implementation has resulted in the development of innovative outreach and educational tools and modules in cutting edge technology areas such as nanotechnology, simulation, genetic engineering, electric circuits, and biosensors. The project is now in its third year, and serves as an exemplary model for the emerging trends in engineering education at the elementary school level. Both the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing this project at the elementary school level are explored and discussed. A documentary style video that chronicles the history and impact of the program will also be presented.

A dexterous micromanipulation system consisting of a two-fingered micro hand, an auto-focusing optical microscope, an image processing system and user interfaces has been developed. The micro hand has 6 DOF: 3 DOF for each of two fingers. These fingers work just like thumb and forefinger. Thus this hand can grasp, move, rotate and release micro objects. A human operator can operate this hand using a joystick or a keyboard, while seeing the microscope image displayed on a TV monitor. The developed system enables automated recognition and handling of micro objects. The microscope focuses on a micro object automatically and detects its position in depth. The image processing system recognizes the object and measures its position on the focal plane. Then, while tracking the micro object in 3D space, the micro hand follows and captures the object automatically. Using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and this micro hand, the mechanical properties of living cells have been measured. A real-time micro VR camera system which generates 3D virtual model of micro environment has been also developed.
