We study interface thermal resistance (ITR) in a system consisting of two dissimilar anharmonic lattices exemplified by the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam and Frenkel-Kontorova models. It is found that the ITR is asymmetric; namely, it depends on how the temperature gradient is applied. The dependence of the ITR on the coupling constant, temperature, temperature difference, and system size is studied. Possible applications in nanoscale heat management and control are discussed.

One of the most common myths in the discipline of project management is the assumption that all projects are the same and can be managed with the same set of processes and techniques. In reality, however, projects differ and "one size does not fit all." Based on our previous research, we have learned that adapting the right approach to the right project is critical to project success;yet, very few organizations know how to distinguish among their project efforts. Furthermore, we have also learned that there is no universal framework that works effectively for all organizations. NASA's procedures suggest several distinctions among projects based on product lines and priority levels. These distinctions form a base for different approval processes. The next step will be to help managers actually manage different projects in different ways. The purpose of this research was to study several NASA programs and start identifying a framework that would work for project managers and teams in the NASA environment. We used four current projects as case studies to test the validity of potential frameworks, and have suggested an initial NASA-specific framework that could eventually lead to guidelines for tailoring project and programmanagement to project type.

The predicted dramatic increase in demand for IT workers in the next decade suggests an opportunity for IT educators to establish plans to ramp up to meet these needs. The purpose of this paper is to help educators understand factors that are important to IT workers and that can be influenced by the educational process. The work reported here is part of an NSF grant that explored current IT worker experiences and motivations. Data for the study was collected using a forty-four-item questionnaire sent to currently employed IT workers in the Boston area. Stepwise multiple linear regression was used to relate certain outcome variables to attributes and opinions of the respondents as represented by question item responses. Relationships have been discovered that will help educators craft academic programs and identify potentially successful students in IT. For example, the analysis indicates questionnaire items associated with the challenge presented by an IT profession and family educational backgrounds in technical areas are important outcome predictors, while gender and age are less important.

The strong tendency toward integrated systems and the system thinking approaches are shaping the way manufacturing enterprises are being managed, especially in an environment of market globalization, ever varying customer requirements and increasing competition. To achieve a competitive advantage an enterprise must cope with these changes in the working environment. The future development of manufacturing simulation systems is directed to integrated enterprise modeling in two direction: horizontally by integration of manufacturing processes with the entire enterprise logistics chain, and vertically by integration of the decision making processes at strategic, tactical and operation levels [1]. In this work, we introduce a hybrid approach to the integration of discrete-event models with system dynamic models to simulate the entire manufacturing enterprise. This approach basically covers the strategic, tactical, and operational levels of decision-making in a single simulation of multiple models at different levels and resolutions. System dynamics (SD) is utilized to model the higher levels of decision-making in the enterprise. On the other hand, discrete-event simulation (DES) models are utilized for the factory and shop floor levels. Studying the interaction between strategic planning and the production activities is the core of this work. Discrete event simulation has been the most usable simulation tool in manufacturing systems. It has the ability to describe the most complex systems at any level of details while allowing tracking the status of individual entities and resources and estimate numerous performance measures associated with these entities various operating conditions. This makes it most appropriate approach to simulate the detailed production activities. At the higher levels of decisions making, the detailed approach of DES is not appropriate [2,3,4]. For one reason the decision maker at such levels do not prefer detailed analyses. In additions unlike m

A risk management approach that integrates risk profile with actual damages and implementation costs to determine the costs and benefits of information security solutions, is discussed. Two crucial concepts of the approach, incident types and bypass rates, used to judge the efficiency and return on investment for an organization's security solutions are described. The data required for risk analysis include observed damage, which is the damage that the company sustains in a given time period for each incident type and cost for a given security solution. The method to calculate risk-based return on investment (RROI) is also described.

A conceptual framework for designing team training programs was discussed to help students in becoming effective team players. The framework was found to imply that any team training program should be designed to prepare team members for managing their own team process. The team training program was suggested to be able to define and apply strategies that allow them to deal with those factors affecting team effectiveness. It was suggested that program content, activities, and resources should be targeted to students achieving a conscious understanding of the process of teaming and team effectiveness.
