An advanced engineering mechanics course teaches students to analyze and model a variety of dynamical systems using Newtonian and Lagrangian mechanics approaches. The modeling task typically produces nonlinear differential equations that are best solved numerically. In order to prepare students to competently solve these systems numerically, the students must master a suitable programming environment. This mastery is achieved incrementally throughout the semester. This paper describes a successful approach to developing the necessary programming skills, culminating in a course project in which the students model a complex dynamical system and produce a graphical animation allowing visualization of dynamical behavior. The paper also describes two typical course projects that have been successfully completed by advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. Copyright 2004 by ASME.

Several international agreements developed during the past decade have emphasized the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to delay or reverse the current global warming cycle. Carbon dioxide, as an abundant, global greenhouse gas, has been pegged as the chief villain in global warming. Much of the carbon sequestration research has focused on the largest plants, trees. The goal of this work is to reinforce the idea that planting trees in urban areas and along rural roads can make a measurable difference in air quality.

Within the next 5-10 years, the percentage of Industrial Engineers working outside of traditional manufacturing industries is expected to increase dramatically. Therefore, the goal of this educational research effort is to prepare future IE graduates for careers in emerging areas of Industry such as those found in Information technology, Service Industries and engineeringmanagement. For instance, in addition to the commonly performed tasks, future IEs will also be expected to contribute to system and product design tasks that will enhance the Information Technology Industries and entities heavily reliant upon the use of this IT strategies such as Global Database systems, PDA's, mobile phones, Semantic Web Technology Companies, etc. Also, changes have occurred in the expectation of the sophistication level of "tools and techniques" used to perform system design, product design, and improvement analysis in Industry. Thus, it is imperative for future IE graduates to have courses and educational experiences that develop their knowledge base, skill set, and work experiences in the area of Advanced Information systems. There are many factors within the Educational Environment that impact the successful preparation of students to pursue future roles in the field of Industrial engineering. Some of the more critical factors include the educational curriculum, instructional strategies, and exposure to recent technology and opportunities for experiential learning. Therefore, this research will also concentrate on preparing students for employment with nontraditional manufacturing industries, as well as on integrating Cognitive Learning Theory into decisions regarding instructional strategies. It is important that the faculty is knowledgeable on the foundation principles in Cognitive Theory and its fundamental application to the specific subject matter of the course they are teaching. Thus, recognizing that all instructional strategies aren't appropriate for every subject;but

An innovative new program designed for the subset of senior design course students is discussed. The program is designed for the Florida Tech's students to leverage their design course by commercializing their products and technologies and start-up companies. The students develop real world marketing and business plans for commercializing innovative new products and technologies. The program is designed to facilitate the creation of start-up, technology- based, revenue generating ventures.

Information technology is providing manufacturers with additional flexibility with regard to their supply chain network choices. Our research studies supply chain network organization structures categorized by the organic and mechanistic management control structures. The structural impacts on cost and fill rate performance are studied in two-echelon and two-supply-chain network organization models under different market coordination conditions using system dynamic simulations. Our results show significant effects of demand and network structural factors, and their interactions, on these measures. As demand becomes dynamic, the cooperative interaction model, where supply chains cooperate to satisfy customer demand, is found to have better system performance than the competitive supply chain model. The analysis also suggests that increasing the responsiveness at the downstream plant is particularly important to the overall system performance improvement.

The statewide transportation improvement program (STIP), a three-year programming document required by federal regulations, has been prepared by the Virginia highway agency as an abridgement of its six-year program (SYTP),which is required by state regulations. Generation of the STIP from the SYTP has been determined to not meet federal requirements. The innovation of this effort is the application of business process modeling to improve hierarchical integration of federal and state transportation programming using the IDEF format. Describing the statewide and federal program processes using the IDEF standards has several benefits. The high-level outputs of software models are charts with underlying characteristics of activities (inputs, controls, mechanisms, and outputs). IDEF models support the business analyst to describe the statewide and federal programs and other processes consistently. Use of the IDEF standards for process improvement may evolve to be a common practice across the agency

To help programmers debug visual programs, we propose an animated execution method with supporting functions to be used with the animated execution. The animated execution animates state transitions as the program is executed. To make it easy for the programmer to interpret the animation, it is displayed in a manner similar to the visual program. The functions are used to narrow the possible locations of bugs and to test fixed components quickly. We have implemented animated execution and the functions on 3D-PP, our three-dimensional visual programming system.

STARS (Students, Teachers and Resources in the Sciences) is a National Science Foundation GK-12 funded project whose objective is to foster systemic change in elementary curricula and enrich math, science and long-term professional development of teachers. The program aims to decrease the current educational gap in science and math present in schools within the same school district, as reflected in the Florida comprehensive assessment test (FCAT). One challenging task is the development of new and innovative modules that introduce advanced science and engineering concepts to third, fourth and fifth grade students from diverse backgrounds. The modules have been designed by graduate fellows (resources) with knowledge in science, engineering, math and technology. This paper discusses the methodology for module development, formatting and design of the lessons, and implementation in the classroom. A discussion regarding the modules from the viewpoint of teachers, students and fellows is also provided.

Several institutional frameworks were enacted by jurisdictions in Japan, which were intended to provide some type of economic aid (compensation) to households that are deprived of their dwellings by natural disaster and intend to reconstruct and/or rent a house in the damaged region. In this work a dynamic model is formulated to investigate house-owners and tenants' housing choice after their dwellings are destroyed by an earthquake as well as owners' insurance behavior before the earthquake. The study analyzes the effects of the subsidy for reconstruction and/or lease (compensation) on the housing market in the damaged region. It is found that the compensation motivates damaged households to reconstruct and/or rent a house in the damaged region and consequently prevents households from flowing out of its region, while insurance has neutral effect on housing choice.
