Artificial intelligence is widely employed to controlling elevators. On the other hand, we encounter such inefficient situations that all elevators are moving in the same direction or that all elevators come to the same floor even in rush hours of the morning. In order to resolve such situations all elevators should be controlled to assign the best elevator to passengers according time-to-time change of passengers. The group control system is employed in selection of driving patterns according to the change of traffic volumes or driving management in accidents. Such a group control realizes comfortable, safe and economical management of elevators. The objective of this paper is to apply DNA computing to calculate complex and huge combinatorial problems of a group of elevators and huge number of floors. The optimal solution is presented to the group control of elevators on the basis of the DNA computing.

This paper describes the design and development of a Cantonese TTVS synthesizer, which can generate highly natural synthetic speech that is precisely time-synchronized with a real-time 3D face rendering. Our Cantonese TTVS synthesizer utilizes a homegrown Cantonese syllable-based concatenative text-to-speech system named CU VOCAL. This paper describes the extension of CU VOCAL to output syllable labels and durations that correspond to the output acoustic wave file. The syllables are decomposed and their initials/finals are mapped to the nearest IPA symbols that correspond to static viseme models. We have authored sixteen static viseme models together with two emotion-based face models. In order to achieve 3D face rendering, we have designed and implemented a blending technique that computes the linear combinations of the static face models to effect smooth transitions in between models. We demonstrate that this design and implementation of a TTVS synthesizer can achieve real-time performance in generation.

The data presented here reveal how traditional college students cope with a totally online class experience. The largest enrollment online course at The Pennsylvania State University is the general education offering "Energy & the Environment", developed jointly by the department of Energy & Geo-Environmental engineering and the John A. Dutton e-Education Institute. Within the first 2-years <1,000 students (mostly on-campus residential students) have been engaged, online. Students work independently or in self-forming cohorts reading text, listening to audio, watching movie clips, and interacting with imagery or simulations online. The majority of students fit the traditional profile in terms of age and on-campus residential status. The class is consistently 60% male. The students are predominantly sophomores (41%), although all academic standings are present within this general education course. One of the main reasons given for enrolling is "flexibility." Roughly half of the student activity (56%) is after the traditional workday of 8 AM to 5:00 PM. Only 10% of the online activity occurs within the traditional morning hours. In a class with weekly Friday evening deadlines, there was little activity (measured by number of page requests) occurring on Saturday (5%), Friday has the bulk of the activity (27%). About 72% of the students accessed the material from home with a high-speed connection. About 17% did the bulk of their work at a computing laboratory, despite the fact that 96% of the class has a personal computer. While the students gained content specific knowledge, they also learned "self-discipline" and other "professional" behavior, and had exposure to online learning and course management software. © 2004 IEEE.

This paper describes basic elements of the Web-based platform for multimedia programming which is designed in the framework of the WWW-oriented workplace of applied programmer (W4AP). The proposed platform hides the insignificant features of software and hardware from the applied programmers and provides a unified style for different programming development tools; a comfortable environment combining visual and multimedia programming technologies. The architecture of the W4AP server is shown supporting a programming process and manipulations with multimedia data. Examples are demonstrated of the practical use of the proposed platform as well as user interface features

The best exact algorithms for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) have been based on either branch-and-cut or Lagrangean relaxation/column generation. This paper presents an algorithm that combines both approaches: it works over the intersection of two polytopes, one associated with a traditional Lagrangean relaxation over q-routes, the other defined by bound, degree and capacity constraints. This is equivalent to a linear program with exponentially many variables and constraints that can lead to lower bounds that are superior to those given by previous methods. The resulting branch-andcut- and-price algorithm can solve to optimality all instances from the literature with up to 135 vertices. This doubles the size of the instances that can be consistently solved. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper presents our application of Health Level Seven (HL7) standard in a collaborative healthcare information system (HIS). Originally, we have used HL7 message events to flow among HIS systems. Later on, we found that the message interface management become a nightmare for system engineers. Recently, we extract the spirit of HL7 standard to create an alterative HL7 usage over the web services, and reorganize our traditional programmer team into a software collaborative team (SCT) to manage the project schedules effectively. Gradually, this new methodology had already been accepted by most of our system engineers. Moreover, the application of this methodology at National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) has shown that it can decrease the HIS system development cost.

At 70 miles per hour, overcoming aerodynamic drag represents about 65% of the total energy expenditure for a typical heavy truck vehicle. The goal of this US department of Energy supported consortium is to establish a clear understanding of the drag producing flow phenomena. This is being accomplished through joint experiments and computations, leading to the 'smart' design of drag reducing devices. This paper will describe our objective and approach, provide an overview of our efforts and accomplishments, and discuss our future direction. © 2004 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is the cooperative engagement of a collection of wireless mobile nodes without aid of any established infrastructure or centralized administration. The conventional security solutions to provide key management through accessing trusted authorities or centralized servers are infeasible for this new environment since mobile ad hoc networks are characterized by the absence of any infrastructure, frequent mobility, and wireless links. In this paper, we propose an on-demand, fully localized, and hop-by-hop public key management scheme for MANETs. It can be performed by generating public/private key pairs by nodes themselves, issuing certificates to neighboring nodes, holding these certificates in their certificate repositories, and providing an authentication service quickly adaptive to the dynamic topology of the network without relying on any servers. Also, our scheme can be performed successfully as long as there is a physical communication line between two nodes, and it is accustomed well to the on-demand routing of MANETs.
