This paper addresses the problem of robust /spl Hscr//sub /spl infin// filtering for linear discrete-time systems subject to parameter uncertainties in the system state-space model and with multiple time delays in the state variables. The uncertain parameters are supposed to belong to a given convex bounded polyhedral domain. A methodology is developed to design a stable linear filter that assures asymptotic stability and a prescribed /spl Hscr//sub /spl infin// performance for the filtering error, irrespective of the uncertainty and the time delays. The proposed design is given in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which has the advantage in that it can be implemented numerically very efficiently.

This paper presents an overview and lessons learned during the evolution of our capstone design experience from case studies to relevant, connected problems. We present some of the pros and cons of conducting real world capstones at the undergraduate level, student's perceptions of the experience, and lessons learned that can reduce the overhead associated with incorporating a real world experience into an undergraduateengineeringmanagementprogram. We also discuss how a capstone can be used to effectively develop those non-technical skills and close competency gaps identified by industry. Lastly, we present a life cycle framework for conducting capstones that we feel is important for ensuring a meaningful experience.

Mobile agent technology has been receiving much attention. Using this technology, we have proposed a multi-agent system named Agent Gateway. In this system, to support location transparency, the routes used for agents' migration are also used for inter-agent communications. However, this system has a problem in that agents cannot communicate with others by a node failure on the routes. To. overcome this problem, it is necessary to set up a new route to go around a failure node. We propose a fast and efficient dynamic routing method. This method finds a roundabout route efficiently by using trace records of agent activity. Finally, we confirmed that the proposed method greatly decreased the total number of messages and made a new route faster than the existing self-healing method by simulation experiments.

We propose a method of relocating storage devices attached to the environment for sharing knowledge efficiently among multiple robots. If a robot stores acquired knowledge into the storage device, other robots can achieve the task by using the knowledge. Since the memory size of the storage device is limited, usefulness of the knowledge is evaluated with respect to the reducible cost. A memory unit containing useless knowledge is removed from the storage device and added to the device where more useful knowledge is required. Then, the robots can store useful knowledge for the whole environment and the memory units are flexibly relocated according to the change of a series of the tasks. The simulation results of multiple robots navigation for repetitive transportation tasks show the effectiveness of our method.

The problem of robust H/spl infin/ filtering for continuous-time uncertain linear systems with multiple time-varying delays in the state variables is investigated. The uncertain parameters are supposed to belong to a given convex bounded polyhedral domain. The aim is to design a stable linear filter assuring asymptotic stability and a prescribed H/spl infin/ performance level for the filtering error system, irrespective of the uncertainties and the time delays. Sufficient conditions for the existence of such a filter are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which can be efficiently solved by means of powerful convex programming tools with global convergence assured. An example illustrates the proposed methodology.

The liberalization of energy markets and the aims of the climate protection promote distributed systems. These systems permit inclusion of all practicable energy resources in the energy mix in connection with storage facilities, controllable loads as well as combined heating and power generation. This article describes an energy management system for distributed energy supply systems and it's application as a planning tool to prepare economy studies. The function of the energy management system is short-term optimization in co-generation systems, incorporating generating units using renewable primary energy. It is based essentially on the function packages forecast (weather, generation and load), operations planning and online modules. The operations planning takes into account different generating units, energy storage mechanisms, demand-side management, contracts and co-generation. The online modules perform redistribution of generation and load schedules, generation control and load control. The studies reported here deal with contract management, evaluation of emissions and renewable energy combined with battery systems.

In this paper we present our computational experience with a heuristic for the problem of minimizing fuel cost on steady-state gas transmission problems on cyclic networks. The procedure is based on a two-stage iterative procedure, where, in a given iteration, gas flow variables are fixed and optimal pressure variables are found via dynamic programming in the first stage. In the second stage, the pressure variables are fixed and an attempt is made to find a set of flow variables that improve the objective function by exploiting the underlying network structure. This work focuses on cyclic network topologies, that is, networks with at least one cycle containing two or more compressor stations. This kind of topologies posses the highest degree of difficulty in real-world problems.
