The ability of the deductive database to handle recursive queries is one of its most useful features. It opens up new possibilities for users to view and analyze data. This ability to handle recursive queries, however, still cannot be fully utilized because when recursive rules are involved, the amount of deduced facts can become very large, making it difficult and sometimes impossible to store, view or analyze the query results. In order to overcome this problem, we have proposed the DSK method and the DSK(S) method to discover characteristic rules from large amount of deduction results without having to store all of them. In this paper, we propose two new methods, the DSK(T) method and the DSK(ST) method which are faster than the DSK method and the DSK(S) method respectively. In addition, we propose a new sampling method called magic sampling, which is used by the two methods to achieve the improvement in speed. Magic sampling works when linear recursive rules are involved and the magic set algorithm is used for deduction. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Prioritizing components of concurrent engineering programs to support new product development

For many organizations Concurrent engineering (CE) has become an integral part of their New Product Development (NPD) practices. By focusing efforts on customer needs, multifunctional teams have routinely reported developing higher quality products faster, and with lower costs. Reviews of literature report improvements in reduced time‐to‐market, improved quality, reductions in engineering change notices, lower rework, and reduced costs. Many of these initial successes, however, have not been repeated in subsequent implementations. Further studies reviewing the initial organizations that made the transition to CE to support their NPD processes have found that many organizations could not provide specifics about continuing CE efforts. Not all CE programs are successful. A difficulty often voiced is that the CE effort did not have a clear focus, or understanding of what the process entailed. The goal of this research was to support organizations implementing CE in their NPD processes by identifying and prioritizing CE program components. Data on CE program components were collected through a literature review and focus group with CE practitioners who averaged 17 years experience in research and product development, primarily in aerospace, electronics, defense and communication. The components were then structured into a two‐tier hierarchy using an Affinity Diagram and used as the basis for surveying a larger group of product developers to determine the relative priority of these components. Data were analyzed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process to arrive at a prioritized list of components for a successful concurrent engineering program. Results of this research identified three primary components for CE programs, the most important being effective use of multifunctional teams, followed by a clearly defined and understood product development process, and the availability and effective use of technology. The mobile computing paradigm introduces new technical issues in the area of database systems. In a mobile environment, the location of mobile users is a kind of system data that is referred most frequently. In mobile environments, location data are stored in databases. However, as the location of user is a frequently changing piece of data, queries on location data are prone to inconsistency. Aggregate queries are among the type of queries that will suffer greatly. In this paper, we propose the two-step locking protocol for location databases that can guarantee aggregate queries to get consistent results. We show that our proposed protocol performs much better than the conventional single-step locking protocol if used for location databases in mobile environment.

We also touch on problems that may be encountered and how they can be overcome. The successes realized and situations encountered by this merger may benefit other institutions that face similar resource constraints.

Recently, two approaches investigated indexing and retrieving video data. One approach utilized the visual features, and the other approach exploited the spatiotemporal features. In this paper, we present a new Visual-Spatio-Temporal model (VST model), to represent videos. The visual features and the spatio-temporal features of video objects are integrated and represented uniformally by a topological model. As a result, rich set of new relationships are defined to support and simplify the formulation of more semantical queries. The expressiveness of the VST video model is validated by some query examples.

Tolerance design is the process of deriving a description of geometric tolerance specifications for a product from a set of specifications on the desired properties of the product. Existing approaches to tolerance analysis and synthesis entail detailed knowledge of geometry of assemblies and are mostly applicable during advanced stages of design, leading to a, less than optimal design process. During the design process of assemblies, both assembly structure and associated tolerance information evolve continuously and significant gains can be achieved by effectively using this information to influence the design of an assembly. Any pro-active apprbach to the assembly or tolerance analysis in the early design stages will involve decision making with incomplete infomation models. In order to carry out early tolerance synthesis and analysis in the conceptual stages of the product design, we need to devise techniques for representing function behavior-assembly models that will allow analysis and synthesis of tolerances, even with the incomplete data set. A 'function' (what *** is for) is associated with the transformation of an input physical entity into an output physical entity by the system: The problem or customer's need, initially described by functional requirements on an assembly, and associated constraints,on the functional requirements derives the concept of an assembly. This specification of, functional requirements and constraints define a functional model for the assembly. Many researchers have studied functional representation (function based taxonomy and ontology), function to form mapping, and behavior representation (behayior means how the system/product works)., However, there is no comprehensive function-assembly-behavior (FAB) integrated model In this paper, we discuss the integration of function, assembly, and. behavior representation into a comprehensive information model (FAB models). In the Fiscal Year 1996 National Defense Authorization Act, Congress amended the Clean Water Act to provide the department of Defense and the Environmental Protection Agency authority to jointly establish standards for incidental discharges from Armed Forces' vessels. The uniform national standards would apply to discharges from vessels of the Navy, Military Sealift Command, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard to the navigable waters and contiguous zone of the U.S. and its territories. Uniform National Discharge Standards (UNDS) will require control of discharges, by either a technology or management practice. UNDS will facilitate the Armed Forces' ability to better design and build future vessels to be environmentally sound and to maintain the operational flexibility of Armed Forces' vessels both domestically and internationally. The development of standards for Armed Forces' vessel discharges may have greater impact on naval engineering requirements for future vessels than any other single environmental issue, These standards are expected to stimulate the development of innovative vessel pollution control technologies, which on be used for both Armed Forces' vessels and commercial shipping vessels. This paper provides an overview of UNDS development, summarizes the results of UNDS Phase I, provides a summary overview of the preliminary approach for accomplishing UNDS Phase Il, and discusses implications for future naval engineering efforts.

Deals with spatio-temporal indexing methods for moving objects. Spatio-temporal indexing gives a basis for a data management structure for the efficient searching of large-scale spatio-temporal data. In this paper, two types of indexing methods are proposed for managing spatio-temporal data for moving objects. Both methods are evaluated by computer simulation and the merits and demerits of both methods are discussed. These methods can be used to realize a highly interactive environment including moving objects.
