It is very important to support communications among operators in the emergency of large scale plants. This paper deals with a communication support system for emergent situations in a hierarchical management structure for large scale plants. Our system is based on the communication model which considers human related factors such as “competence”, “duty”, “responsibility” and “knowledge”. A prototype of a group communication support system is developed based on the model, and the system is evaluated for a plant example

An empirical study was performed to examine the role of individual-, contextual-, and social-level factors on the media choice of geographically distributed teleworkers. Relevant data were gathered from teleworkers of a company who were distributed throughout several satellite offices. Data analysis indicated that teleworkers choice of a medium resulted from the dynamics of individual-, contextual, and social-level variables. management support as a social influence showed the strongest impact on teleworkers media use. The study confirmed that, though regarded as a lean medium, email could become an effective and rich communication tool through an active social structural process.

The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), in conjunction with the U.S. Navy, initiated a research program for the design and construction of a distinctive warship for the 21st century known as the Arsenal Ship. By using an innovative development and acquisition approach it was hoped to streamline the procurement process and reduce costs. In an environment where budgets are being cut, both industry and Government were challenged to develop, design, and produce the innovative ship and related mission systems to meet specific performance capabilities within strict affordability constraints. A key element of this innovative acquisition approach was a new certification scheme designed to replace the traditional test and evaluation (T&E) and acceptance process. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of the certification plan during Phase LI of the Arsenal Ship program by the American Bureau of Shipping and the contending Shipyard teams, and to discuss the potential benefits of this alternative certification approach. Although the Arsenal Ship program was canceled late in 1997, insight derived from the exploration of new certification concepts could benefit future design and building programs.

The historical analytical data collected at Murdock demonstrate that: Constitutent concentrations in ground water in the area of highest known contaminant concentrations and along the flow path downgradient of that area decreased over the 3.5-year period when we began monitoring at the site and when we conducted the biogeochemical study. The ground water plume has stabilized and will not move further south. Chlorinated hydrocarbon parent products (TCE and 1,1,1-TCA) are degrading to their daughter products (1,1-DCA, 1,1-DCE, and cis-1,2-DCE) and thence to VC. The estimated total mass of chlorinated hydrocarbons dissolved in ground water was reduced from 1032 to 346 pounds between 1993 and the end of 1996 (approximately 66%). However, the scoring from the AFCEE protocol showed that there was only 'limited' evidence of biological dechlorination occurring at the site.

We compare EER and OO data models from the point of view of design quality. Quality is measured in terms of (a) correctness of the conceptual schemas being designed, (b) time to complete the design task, and (c) designers' preferences of the models. Result of an experimental comparison of the two models reveal that the EER model surpasses the OO model for designing unary and ternary relationships, it takes less time to design EER schemas, and the EER model is preferred by designers. We conclude that even if the objective is to implement an OO database schema, the recommended procedure is to: (1) create an EER conceptual scheme, (2) map it to an OO schema, and augment the target schema with behavioral constructs that are unique to the 00 approach.

Flexibility has become an important priority in the formulation and implementation of manufacturing strategies. This in turn has opened up a new class of design problems for such systems. Flexible assembly systems (FAS), consisting of a variety of processors and operations, provide the opportunity for improving product manufacturing flexibility, hence gaining competitive advantages. This paper considers a particular design decision problem for FAS. A matrix-based, polynomial-time lower bound algorithm is presented. Simulated annealing and tabu search metaheuristics are formulated to address the problems. Computational experience with these metaheuristics is reported.

We study the dynamic routing problem for a flexible manufacturing system consisting of two unreliable machines and a finite buffer. One product-type is produced which requires two operations in sequence. The demand rate is assumed to be constant. Each machine is capable of performing both operations. The objective is to trace the demand while keeping the work-in-process low and the cycle-time short. An optimal control formulation is established for the dynamic routing problem. A production flow control algorithm is developed based on a combination of mathematical modeling and heuristics. The control policy is simulated and a comparison with the numerical optimal solution shows that it performs well for the instances under consideration.
