We compare EER and OO data models from the point of view of design quality. Quality is measured in terms of (a) correctness of the conceptual schemas being designed, (b) time to complete the design task, and (c) designers' preferences of the models. Result of an experimental comparison of the two models reveal that the EER model surpasses the OO model for designing unary and ternary relationships, it takes less time to design EER schemas, and the EER model is preferred by designers. We conclude that even if the objective is to implement an OO database schema, the recommended procedure is to: (1) create an EER conceptual scheme, (2) map it to an OO schema, and augment the target schema with behavioral constructs that are unique to the 00 approach.

Flexibility has become an important priority in the formulation and implementation of manufacturing strategies. This in turn has opened up a new class of design problems for such systems. Flexible assembly systems (FAS), consisting of a variety of processors and operations, provide the opportunity for improving product manufacturing flexibility, hence gaining competitive advantages. This paper considers a particular design decision problem for FAS. A matrix-based, polynomial-time lower bound algorithm is presented. Simulated annealing and tabu search metaheuristics are formulated to address the problems. Computational experience with these metaheuristics is reported.

We study the dynamic routing problem for a flexible manufacturing system consisting of two unreliable machines and a finite buffer. One product-type is produced which requires two operations in sequence. The demand rate is assumed to be constant. Each machine is capable of performing both operations. The objective is to trace the demand while keeping the work-in-process low and the cycle-time short. An optimal control formulation is established for the dynamic routing problem. A production flow control algorithm is developed based on a combination of mathematical modeling and heuristics. The control policy is simulated and a comparison with the numerical optimal solution shows that it performs well for the instances under consideration.

This paper deals with a manufacturing system consisting of a single machine subject to random failures and repairs. The machine can produce two types of parts. When the production is switched from one part type to the other, a random setup time is incurred at a constant cost rate. The objective is to track the demand, while keeping the work-in-process as close as possible to zero for both products. The problem is formulated as an optimal stochastic control problem. The optimal policy is obtained numerically by discretizing the continuous time continuous state optimality conditions using a Markov chain approximation technique. The discretized optimality conditions are shown to correspond to an infinite horizon, discrete time, discrete state dynamic programming problem. The optimal setup policy is shown to have two different structures depending on the parameters of the system. A heuristic policy is proposed to approximate the optimal setup policy. Simulation results show that the heuristic policy is a very good approximation for sufficiently reliable systems.

We investigated four major teleradiology programmes in Hong Kong. We analysed the overall organizational background of each programme, the context of its implementation, the choice of technology and the decision-making process, and the subsequent dissemination of the technology. Our review suggests that the success of a telemedicine programme is contingent not only on good technology but also on effective management of issues pertaining to human and organizational factors. At the departmental level, the context of the implementation of telemedicine is crucial. At the institutional level, success depends on planning and management. At the professional level, continued education, periodic meetings and seminars are all effective means of promoting telemedicine among health-care professionals and administrators. At the national level, the Hong Kong experience suggests that telemedicine can be effectively developed by starting with urban-based programmes.

This paper proposes a scheme that directly transforms unified system specifications into highly parallel dynamic data-driven programs incrementally in an interactive fashion. In this paper the scheme proposed is described with special emphasis on its application to stream-oriented processing such as the multimedia signal processing. An abstract data type for generalized multiple data streams is introduced in order to facilitate interpretations of hierarchical and diagrammatic specifications. Also an optimization technique applicable in fitting the specifications to a specific hardware configuration is shown. Finally, practicability of the methodology is illustrated through a design process of an HDTV signal decoder.

This paper discusses the unique working relationship between the Manufacturing Innovation Council, GMI's industrial engineering capstone design program, and the Genesee County business community. Discusses the properties of a 64-bit environment and the redesign of our 32-bit INADA/ODMG object management system for the 64-bit environment. The new implementation is introduced based on the 64-bit properties. In the new design, a very large on-disk database can be mapped onto a large-size virtual memory without considering the size limitation. High query performance and storage capability are expected in the new INADA/ODMG. While designing the implementation of a Sequoia 2000 benchmark, we came to the conclusion that OQL is flexible enough to handle massive amounts of complicated data.
