Despite the variety of potential benefits to society, organizations, and individuals, telework growth has been moderate. We posit that the materialization of telework potential is viable when management recognizes its innovative value and accordingly changes the implementation paradigm from selection to adaptation and from ad hoc based temporary solution of an individual problem to the strategic tool that can improve organizational effectiveness. Based on the changed paradigm, we suggest a conceptual model of intraorganizational adoption/diffusion of telework that describes a causal relationship among important agents and organizational variables.

The paper presents a parallel algorithm for embedding large pyramids into smaller hypercubes with load balancing. With dilation 4, congestion at most 2/sup n-k/2/+4, and load [2/sup 2n-k//3] when k is even, our algorithm embeds the pyramid into the hypercube, otherwise, with the same dilation and load, it has congestion 2/sup n-(k+1)///sup 2+1/+6 when k is odd. The algorithm can be performed in O(k)-bit time.

With the rapid proliferation of computer networks, the potential of electronic communication media to increase the effectiveness of internal processes of organizations and the performance of group activities has been frequently discussed. Especially with the increased adoption of distributive telework across organizations, effective use of low cost and general purpose communication media is becoming an important issue for a successive organizational process. Recent advances in network and computer technologies have led to the development of the mobile computing environment. In this environment, the location management is one of the most important issues. In this paper, for reducing the traffic volume of the location management, we propose a hierarchical location management method. This method divides a network into multiple groups (areas) where each area has at least one router. The locations of mobile hosts in an area are managed within the area, independently from those in other areas. Furthermore, the most suitable location management method for an area is used in this area. We also show results of simulation experiments for verifying the efficiency of the method. These results show that our proposed method can reduce the traffic volume of the location management.

The reliability of a distributed database systems is the probability that a program which runs on multiple processing elements and needs to communicate with other processing elements for remote database will be executed successfully. This reliability varies according to (1) the topology of the distributed database system, (2) the reliability of the communication links, (3) the databases and program distribution among processing elements, and (4) the databases required to execute a program. This paper shows that solving this reliability problem is NP-hard even when the distributed database system is restricted to a series-parallel, a 2-tree, a tree, or a star structure. Two polynomial-time algorithms are proposed for computing the reliability of a distributed program which runs on a linear and a ring distributed database system, respectively.

In order to manage software projects quantitatively, we have presented a new model far software project based on generalized stochastic Petri-net model which can take influence of human factors into account, and we have already developed software project simulator based on GSPN model. This paper proposes methods for calculating model parameters in the new model and estimating the number of faults in the design and debug phases of software process. Then we present experimental evaluation of proposed method using a data of actual software development project on a certain company. As the result of case study, we confirmed its effectiveness with respect to estimating the number of faults in the software process.

Navy ships must be able to operate anywhere in the world and visit any port unencumbered by environmental restrictions. The Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OCNO) has formulated a vision for the environmentally sound ship of the 21st century, which will ensure compliance with environmental requirements applicable to Navy ships, while maintaining fleet effectiveness and readiness. Navy ships generate a variety of solid and liquid wastes and atmospheric emissions. Ships have limited capabilities for holding wastes for offload to shore. Working closely with the OCNO, the Naval Sea systems Command (NavSea) is developing systems, equipment, and procedures to process and manage ship wastes in an environmentally responsible manner. Several pieces of shipboard equipment have been successfully developed to process solid and liquid waste, hazardous materials and ozone-depleting substances (ODSs). The technologies and practices being developed under this program will: ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations, significantly reduce the logistic burdens and costs associated with shoreside offload and disposal of ship wastes, implement Navy environmental and occupational safety and health policies, enhance the quality of life aboard ship, and continue the Navy's leadership role in protecting the marine environment.
