His work has included instruction in Naval Construction and Marine Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology leading to a Master of Science degree in 1944 and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1964. As an Engineering Duty Officer (EDO)
he has served in various Navy commands including the Mare Island Naval Shipyard the former New York Naval Shipyard the USS Philippine Sea (CVA-47) during the Korean War as Chief Engineer and CINCPACFLT and COMSERVPAC Staffs as Fleet and Force Maintenance Officer. Within the Naval Ship Systems Command and its predecessor BUSHIPS his duties have included Director of the Facilities Division Head of the Hull Design Branch Director of the Ship Design Division Assistant Chief for Design Shipbuilding and Fleet Maintenance and as Commander Naval Ship Systems Command from 1969 until 1972. Other duties have included an assignment as the Project Manager for the Navy's Fast Deployment Logistic Ship Project from 1965 to 1967 Deputy Chief of Naval Material for Logistic Support from 1967 to 1969 and Chairman of the Naval Material Command Shipbuilding Council which commenced upon completion of his tour as Commander NAVSHIPS in 1972. On 4 September 1973 he was appointed Director of the Defense Energy Task Group (DETG) and subsequently on 15 November 1973 as Director of Energy for the Department of Defense. A former President of ASNE from 1970 to 1971 he is currently Vice-President of the American Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. In addition he is a member of the honorary engineering society Sigma Xi and listed among those in Who's Who in America.

graduating in 1966 and is currently completing requirements for a Master of Business Administration degree at the George Washington University. After gradwlting from Webb he was employed by Texaco Inc. Marine Department and later served three years active duty in the Navy as the DEG-7 Project Oficer at Supervisor of Shipbuilding Conversion and Repair Third Naval District. Subsequent thereto he was employed by the Naval Ship Research and Development Center prior to assuming his present position in the Ship System Design Division of the Naval Ship Engineering Center. He is a member of ASNE and SNAME. Mr. Anthony R. Di'hapani received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1958
and subsequently completed course requirements for a Master of Engineering Science while an evening student at the George Washington University. He began his engineering career in 1958 in the BuShips Steam Turbine and Gear Branch specializing in steam turbine systems for nuclear submarines. In 1962 after completing a Navy-sponsored Electronics Training Program he joined the SQS-26 Sonar Project and served as Head of the Special Projects Section and subsequently the Test and Analysis Section until selected in 1967 to head the ASW Branch for the newly-churtered DXIDXG Project now the DO963 Ship Acquisition Project in the Naval Ship System Command. In 1970 he was designated a8 Acting Director of the DD963 Technical Management Plans Division and when the PF Program emerged in 1971 was reassigned as Deputy Project Manager for the Patrol Frigate Project.

This book includes selected papers presented at the Fifth International Workshop on Agent-Based Approaches in Economic and Social Complex systems held in Tokyo in 2007. The International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL) is an annual international forum that provides opportunities for librarians, researchers and experts to exchange their research results, innovative ideas, service experiences and state-- the-art developments in the field of digital libraries. Building on the success of the first six ICADL conferences, the 7th ICADL conference hosted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Shanghai Library in Shanghai, China aimed to further strengthen the academic collaboration and strategic alliance in the Asia- Pacific Region in the development of digital libraries. The theme of ICADL 2004 was: Digital library: International Collaboration and Cross-fertilization, with its focus on technology, services, management and localization. The conference began with an opening ceremony and the conference program featured 9 keynote speeches and 5 invited speeches by local and international experts. During the 3-day program, 40 research paper presentations were given in 3 parallel sessions. The conference also included 6 tutorials and an exhibition. The conference received 359 submissions, comprising 248 full papers and 111 short papers. Each paper was carefully reviewed by the program Committee members. Finally, 44 full papers, 15 short papers and 37 poster papers were selected. On behalf of the Organizing and program Committees of ICADL 2004, we would like to express our appreciation to all authors and attendees for participating in the conference. We also thank the sponsors, program Committee members, supporting organizations and helpers for making the conference a success. Without their efforts, the conference would not have been possible.

Biomolecular computing has emerged as an interdisciplinary ?eld that draws - gether chemistry, computer science, mathematics, molecular biology, and physics. Our knowledge on DNA nanotechnology and biomolecular computing increases exponentially with every passing year. The international meeting on DNA Based Computers has been a forum where scientists with di?erent backgrounds, yet sharing a common interest in biomolecular computing, meet and present their latest results. Continuing this tradition, the 8th International Meeting on DNA Based Computers (DNA8) focuses on the current theoretical and experimental results with the greatest impact. Papers and poster presentations were sought in all areas that relate to b- molecular computing, including (but not restricted to): algorithms and appli- tions, analysis of laboratory techniques/theoretical models, computational p- cesses in vitro and in vivo, DNA-computing-based biotechnological applications, DNA devices, error evaluation and correction, in vitro evolution, models of biomolecular computing (using DNA and/or other molecules), molecular - sign, nucleic acid chemistry, and simulation tools. Papers and posters with new experimental results were particularly encouraged. Authors who wished their work to be considered for either oral or poster presentation were asked to select from one of two submission “tracks”: – Track A - Full Paper – Track B - One-Page Abstract For authors with late-breaking results, or who were submitting their manuscript to a scienti?c journal, a one-page abstract, rather than a full paper, could be submitted in Track B. Authors could (optionally) include a preprint of their full paper, for consideration only by the program committee.

AZIZ, ABDULTHE AUTHOR was born in East Pakistan on January 31
1932 received the Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Dacca University in Pakistan in 1952 and the Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Michigan State University in 1953. He did further graduate work at MIT Columbia and Johns Hopkins Universities and is now a candidate for the doctoral degree at the University of Maryland. He joined the Department of Navy in March 1966 with the Naval Ship Research and Development Center Annapolis Division where he worked on the MESA (Machinery Effectiveness Systems Analysis) Program sponsored by the Navy Ship Systems Command. The present paper is largely based on a 138-page report entitled “Systems Effectiveness in the United States Navy” on the works of the MESA Program. Currently he is assigned to the Naval Research Laboratory to provide inhouse engineering support in the development and analysis of systems and their components for the conduct of fundamental research in Astronomy and Astrophysics by the Laboratory. Prior to joining the Department of Navy he worked for General Electric Cdmpany in the analysis and development of large steam turbine components and for Burns & Roe Corporation in systems design and analysis for power plants both fossil powered and nuclear. With Burns & Roe he participated in the systems effectiveness analysis of the Army PM-3A nuclear power plant in the Antarctica. He received the United States citizenship in January 1966 is a member of the ASME and the U.S. Naval Institute.
