Research on autonomous ships is being vigorously pursued globally. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is leading a phased approach to the development of unmanned large ships. In contrast, the development of small ships is progressing independently in countries with a robust recreational maritime culture, focusing on innovative hull designs and systems. The small ship market is distinguished by high rates of used vessel purchases, a preference for cost-effectiveness, and a general lack of navigational aids compared to larger vessels. Furthermore, small ships are often operated by amateurs rather than professional navigators. These market characteristics suggest that the adoption of small autonomous ships will likely lag behind that of larger vessels. In response, our research aims to develop an economical program that enables autonomous operations in existing small ships or provides navigational assistance to inexperienced operators. Initially, we identified the necessary technology and economical equipment required to retrofit existing small ships for autonomous functionality. Subsequently, we analyzed the vessel's motion model to determine suitable control parameters. A straightforward control method was selected to facilitate user comprehension of the ship's status and interaction with the autonomous program. Our goal is to allow users to grasp the ship's motion dynamics through devices designed for autonomous navigation and to effectively implement navigational programs.

Subsea manifold is a metallic structure fixed to the seabed, in which valves and accessory equipment are installed that make it possible to couple Wet Christmas Trees and other production systems (such as Pipeline End Manifold, Pipeline End Termination and risers);it is required during the completion and production of oil and gas wells. The failure of the subsea manifold can cause serious damage to the environment and human health, as well as stop production causing the loss of large foreign exchange, so ensuring its integrity is extremely important for the sector. In this article a Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis is presented for the criticality classification of the components of a typical subsea manifold cluster, Pipeline end manifold and Pipeline end termination. The final effect of equipment failure in the manifold was evaluated as a function of production interruption, production reduction, rupture, environmental pollution, plugging, leakage and structural collapse. Different means of detection were considered. The results of this study provide information about the weakness of the subsea manifold equipment. It is expected that this paper can contribute to future analysis of similar equipment and means to contribute to future work involving risk analysis, and inspection maintenance plan. © 2022 ESREL2022 Organizers. The work proposes the Zero Harmonic Distortion Converter (ZHD) as a grid-connected grid-forming (GFM) converter due to its unique sinusoidal characteristic without capacitive filters, low parts count, and off-the-shelf power circuitry with a simple open-loop control structure that does not contribute to possible control interaction and resonances in grid-connected mode. These characteristic are reached by a harmonic cancellation in a three-winding transformer along with harmonic elimination using the Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (SHE PWM). The ZHD GFM converter is a compelling alternative for GFM battery energy storage systems (BESS) in medium-voltage applications.

This work proposes a single-layer finite-horizon optimal control strategy to solve the autonomous navigation problem while accounting for energy efficiency and providing obstacle avoidance feature in cluttered environments with unknown obstacles. Considering the rate capacity effect of electric batteries, the nonlinear state-of-charge behavior is described and included in the optimal control problem to achieve energy-awareness. Besides, artificial potential fields are considered to obtain obstacle avoidance capabilities. The control problem is formulated inspired by the tracking model predictive control framework, and it considers the central idea of including artificial variables into the control problem to obtain a closed-loop system with an enlarged domain of attraction and with feasibility insurance. Finally, numerical results in a case study considering a quadrotor UAV are provided to corroborate the proposed strategy. © 2021 IEEE.

Elevating urban sustainability: An intelligent framework for optimizing water-energy-food nexus synergies in metabolic landscapes

As global urbanization accelerates, harmonizing water, energy, and food (WEF) resources within urban contexts is pivotal for sustainable development. This study introduces the Intelligent Urban Metabolism Framework (IUMF) for synergizing WEF dynamics, with a focus on socio-technological linkages and environmental concerns arising from climate change. Through a pioneering fusion of system dynamics simulation, machine learning surrogate, metaheuristic optimization, and multi-criteria decision making techniques, IUMF offers a transformative approach to resource management under climate uncertainty. Leveraging comprehensive data sourced from Taipei, Taiwan, this study demonstrates noteworthy enhancements in WEF nexus synergies, including a 9% boost in water supply, an 8% rise in energy benefits, and a significant 13.8% increase in food production. The cases corresponding to the best solutions under the scenario depicting a wet year and high solar radiation intensity would attain the largest benefits: 873 million m3 of water supply (water sector), 90.3 million USD of power benefits (energy sector), and 79 million kg of food production (food sector). These advancements are achieved while reducing computational runtime from 20 h to 30 min. By fostering a user-friendly interface and embracing an intelligent framework, IUMF catalyzes urban sustainability efforts. Our study highlights the potential of intelligent frameworks in addressing complex urban challenges and guiding the evolution of resource-efficient systems and offers a blueprint for a more resilient and sustainable urban future. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Every year, buildings undergo services of adaptation to account for changes in users’ needs, deterioration, code updates, among others. This process, also called building obsolescence, is inevitable and most of these buildings lack a proactive adaptation plan. New buildings, however, can be designed to be more resilient when dealing with obsolescence by leveraging circular economy principles. The understanding of building obsolescence is crucial since they are the triggers of a process of adaptation. Studies have investigated different types of building obsolescence but have not focused on specific causes. Through qualitative analysis of interviews, we identified challenges faced by Architecture, engineering, and Construction professionals in the building adaptation process. Recommendations to tackle these challenges were given, including the selection of durable materials, overdesign of key elements, design for disassembly, and use of modular systems. The research findings can help planners avoid common issues that harm the building adaptation process. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In a relational database management system (RDBMS), when a user searches for a keyword included in a document, a keyword search is attempted using various join methods. When a keyword search is performed using a merge join in an RDBMS that stores a large number of documents, the retrieval time for the query is increased due to unnecessary comparison operations. In this study, we propose a keyword search using a Skip Merge Join that minimizes unnecessary comparison operations when a keyword search is performed using a row direction relational inverse index table. We confirmed the results of improving the keyword search performance by implementing the Skip Merge Join algorithm using the relational database PostgreSQL and verifying it through experiments. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

To analyze the radioactive wastes produced by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, we have been developing a laser absorption and emission spectroscopic system for sample screening. By the sputtering technique, neutral atomic vapor can be produced from a solid sample even if the chemical forms of the samples are complex. This system utilizes a DC glow-discharged hollow cathode atomic source that does not require an extensive chemical pretreatment. Although it is possible to perform emission spectroscopy for multi-element simultaneous analysis to clarify the elements of samples with this system, it takes much time to assign complex peaks of the samples. A program was developed for the rapid assignment of the emission spectra. We utilized a Czerny-Turner spectrometer, which has a low resolution power. The program written in Python could assign the large emission peaks because of the ease of signal discrimination. © 2021 Atomic Energy Society of Japan, All Rights Reserved.

During the rapid economic growth of Japan in the 1960s, the country's infrastructure development progressed swiftly. Since 2014, the Japanese government has mandated regular inspections of major urban infrastructure. This policy has resulted in the annual accumulation of substantial amounts of infrastructure inspection data. Two years prior to implementing this policy, the Japanese government also launched an open data initiative to encourage industry developers to utilize open data. However, this study observes that inconsistencies in data formatting and standards across different regions pose significant challenges to the utilization of this data. To address the obstacles hindering the use of open data, this study proposes an integrated system(Service Link Platform) for effectively managing and utilizing periodic transportation infrastructure inspection data which encompasses data collection, data format processing, cloud storage and transmission, and data utilization. This article will layout the manner in which the system employs a method for distributing data in JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format to publicly manage bridge inspection data and ensure compatibility of data formats.
