graduate school, especially during the first semester, can be challenging for several reasons. Unlike undergraduate programs, most graduate students graduate in one to two years from their master's programs. To remain in good academic standing, graduate programs have minimum grade and GPA requirements, which are typically higher than the requirements the students had to meet in their undergraduate program. These expectations in graduate school require that graduate students be ready from day one. International graduate students face additional challenges in their first semester. Unfortunately, several international students take too much time to overcome the initial challenges, negatively impacting their ability to integrate and thrive in their graduate program. This paper reviews the factors that support the early integration of graduate students in their first semester. A survey was designed to understand the factors that international graduate students perceive as critical to thriving in their first semester. The feedback from the students indicates that adjusting to the classroom is the least important factor in achieving academic success as a graduate international student. However, a good understanding of the educational system was highly perceived by the students as critical for thriving in the United States. © American Society for engineering Education, 2024.

The global trend in broadband internet services reveals an increased focus on reliability, customer service, and integrating new technologies like IoT, 5G, or FMC. Customer service is primarily determined by network quality and reliability, price, and the quality of customer support provided by ISPs. Meanwhile, existing network quality measurement methods often involve numerous parameters, ranging from download speed and server response time to video streaming quality, each providing a separate insight into aspects of user experience. Therefore, the importance of the composite index method is becoming increasingly relevant. This method allows the integration of these various parameters into a single, easily understandable integrated index, simplifying complex data analysis into a more concise and interpretable form. As a result of this approach, internet service providers can more effectively monitor and enhance the customer experience and the overall quality of their services for various purposes with a single composite parameter value, providing reassurance and confidence in their operations. © 2024 IEEE.

Underwater wireless sensor networks(UWSNs)rely on data aggregation to streamline routing operations by merging information at intermediate nodes before transmitting it to the ***,many existing data aggregation techniques are designed exclusively for static networks and fail to reflect the dynamic nature of underwater ***,conventional multi-hop data gathering techniques often lead to energy depletion problems near the sink,commonly known as the energy hole ***,cluster-based aggregation methods face significant challenges such as cluster head(CH)failures and collisions within clusters that degrade overall network *** address these limitations,this paper introduces an innovative framework,the Cluster-based Data Aggregation using Fuzzy Decision Model(CDAFDM),tailored for mobile *** proposed method has four main phases:clustering,CH selection,data aggregation,and *** CH selection,a fuzzy decision model is utilized to ensure efficient cluster head selection based on parameters such as residual energy,distance to the sink,and data delivery likelihood,enhancing network stability and energy *** the aggregation phase,CHs transmit a single,consolidated set of non-redundant data to the base station(BS),thereby reducing data duplication and saving *** adapt to the changing network topology,the re-clustering phase periodically updates cluster formations and reselects *** results show that CDAFDM outperforms current protocols such as CAPTAIN(Collection Algorithm for underwater oPTical-AcoustIc sensor Networks),EDDG(Event-Driven Data Gathering),and DCBMEC(Data Collection Based on Mobile Edge Computing)with a packet delivery ratio increase of up to 4%,an energy consumption reduction of 18%,and a data collection latency reduction of 52%.These findings highlight the framework’s potential for reliable and energy-efficient data aggregation mobile UWSNs.

Vision Transformers have demonstrated remarkable performance in various vision tasks. However, general-purpose processors, such as CPUs and GPUs, face challenges in efficiently handling the inference of Vision Transformers. To address the issue, prior works have focused on accelerating only attention due to its high computational cost in NLP Transformers. In contrast, Vision Transformers demonstrate a higher computational cost due to linear modules such as linear transformation, linear projection and Feed-Forward Network (FFN), compared to attention. In this paper, we present ViT-slice, an algorithm-architecture co-design that enhances end-to-end performance and energy efficiency by optimizing not only attention but also linear modules. At the algorithm level, we propose bit-slice compression that avoids storing the redundant most significant bits (MSBs). Additionally, we present bit-slice dot product with early skip to efficiently compute the dot product using bit-sliced data. To enable early skip during the dot product computation, we leverage a trainable threshold. On the hardware level, we introduce a specialized bit-slice dot product unit (BSDPU) to efficiently process the bit-slice dot product with early skip algorithm. Additionally, we present a bit-slice encoder and decoder for on-chip bit-slice compression. ViT-slice achieves 244×, 35.3×, 16.8×, 10.4×, 5.0× end-to-end speedup over Xeon CPU, EdgeGPU, TITAN Xp GPU, Sanger accelerator and ViTCoD accelerator, respectively. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This working-in-progress paper aims to present a three-dimensional reconstruction using aerial images in different environments. The Effects of Countermeasures for Preventing Vigilance Decrement During Manual and Automated Driving

Using driving mode (manual and automated driving) and countermeasures (chewing gum and auditory-tactile stimulation) for preventing vigilance decrement as experimental factors, this study investigated the effectiveness of chewing gum and auditory-tactile stimulation for preventing vigilance decrement during 2-hour simulated manual and automated driving. The observed reaction times and error rates for the unexpected events revealed the vigilance decrement in the latter half of the 2-hour experiment for both manual and autonomous driving conditions. The countermeasures contributed to mitigating vigilance decrement. The psychological rating on comfort and sleepiness evaluation by KSS during the 2-hour experiment indicated that the chewing gum was more effective than auditory-tactile stimulation. Vigilance decrement was less for the manual driving condition than for the Level 2 automated driving condition with less WWL score of NASA-TLX. The overload explanation applied to the vigilance decrement in manual driving, because the vigilance decrement for the higher workload condition (manual driving without a countermeasure) was more remarkable than that for the lower workload condition (manual driving with a countermeasure). Data of automated driving did not apply to either overload or underload explanation of vigilance decrement, and only the countermeasures contributed to the mitigation of vigilance decrement. © 2013 IEEE.

Artificial general intelligence on graphs has shown significant advancements across various applications, yet the traditional 'Pre-train & Fine-tune' paradigm faces inefficiencies and negative transfer issues, particularly in complex and few-shot settings. Graph prompt learning emerges as a promising alternative, leveraging lightweight prompts to manipulate data and fill the task gap by reformulating downstream tasks to the pretext. However, several critical challenges still remain: how to unify diverse graph prompt models, how to evaluate the quality of graph prompts, and to improve their usability for practical comparisons and selection. In response to these challenges, we introduce the first comprehensive benchmark for graph prompt learning. Our benchmark integrates SIX pre-training methods and FIVE state-of-the-art graph prompt techniques, evaluated across FIFTEEN diverse datasets to assess performance, flexibility, and efficiency. We also present 'ProG', an easy-to-use open-source library that streamlines the execution of various graph prompt models, facilitating objective evaluations. Additionally, we propose a unified framework that categorizes existing graph prompt methods into two main approaches: prompts as graphs and prompts as tokens. This framework enhances the applicability and comparison of graph prompt techniques. There has been little research comparing patients’ perceptions of the quality of care in outpatient and inpatient settings between general and specialized hospitals. This study aimed to address this gap by examining 1,337 outpatients and 1,833 inpatients across all general (n=5) and specialized (n=7) tertiary public hospitals in a major city in China. Patients’ perceptions of the quality of care were assessed across six dimensions: safety, tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. Dimension gap scores were used to compare perceptions of each dimension between the two hospital types, and statistical differences were determined using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Negative dimension gap scores were identified in the safety, tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy of outpatient and inpatient care in general and specialized hospitals, except for the tangibility of inpatient care in general hospitals. The negative dimension gap scores for specialized hospitals were significantly larger than those for general hospitals across all six dimensions of both inpatient and outpatient quality of care, except for assurance of inpatient care. Overall, outpatients and inpatients in both general and specialized hospitals did not experience the care they expected, and outpatient and inpatient care in specialized hospitals were perceived as lower quality than in general hospitals. Patient perceptions indicated that both outpatient and inpatient care in both general and specialized hospitals need further enhancements. © 2024 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

This paper introduces an experimental method to detect the motion of an electrostatic Micro-Electro-Mechanical systems (MEMS) resonator in aqueous media. The resonator comprises a micro cantilever beam subject to electrostatic actuation through a side electrode. A Finite Element Method (FEM) model of the resonator is developed to determine the in-plane mode shapes and their natural frequencies in order to facilitate the experimental study. The motion of the resonator lead to variations in its capacitance and induce a current. The developed experiments demonstrate that motion-induced current can be measured and analyzed to detect the motion of the resonator's higher-order modes and can be used in chemical sensing. © 2024 IEEE.

This research evaluates the effectiveness of Mean-Variance (MV) and Safety-First (SF) portfolio selection strategies for high-volume/high-value traded stocks on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE). Analyzing data from 288 stocks over 7,670 trading days (30 years), we estimated stock returns, assigned probability weights, and conducted optimization models. The results show that the Mean-Variance (MV0.5) strategy achieved the best balance between risk and return, boasting the highest mean and cumulative returns with moderate volatility. The Safety-First (SF) strategy, however, yielded negative cumulative returns, indicating potential issues. The Market strategy had the lowest mean return but also the least risk, appealing to risk-averse investors. The Portfolio Mean-Variance (PMV) strategy provided a reasonable balance of returns and risk. Statistical analysis revealed that only the MV0.5 strategy outperformed market returns. These findings offer crucial insights into risk assessment and portfolio management for investors evaluating these strategies against market performance. © 2024 IEEE.
