A Flexibility-Oriented Optimization Model for Enhancing Economic and Emission Sustainability in a Local Multi-Carrier Energy Community Considering Hydrogen Fuel Station and Power-to-Gas Unit

Hydrogen vehicles (HVs) represent a promising advancement towards a greener and more sustainable world. In this context, Local Multi-Carrier Energy systems (LMCESs) offer intelligent solutions for addressing this opportunity. The LMCES incorporate Power-to-Gas (P2G), Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units, water desalination, electrical, water, hydrogen, and heat energy storages, and renewable energy resources to facilitate the integration of HVs and enhance overall energy efficiency. This paper proposes a probabilistic approach for operating an LMCES, taking into account various energy carriers such as electricity, heat, gas, and water. To simultaneously address economic and emission-related objectives, the lexicographic method as a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach is employed. Furthermore, the integration of flexibility commitments imposed by upstream levels into the LMCES is incorporated as a constraint within the optimization problem. Additionally, the objective function accounts for the incentive to encourage cooperation from the LMCES in the flexibility program. Moreover, a scenario-based method is employed to model the uncertainty. The optimization results underscore that increasing flexibility defaults while keeping flexibility prices constant reduces the operational cost of LMCES, but the impact on cost when increasing flexibility prices depends on whether the flexibility default is low or high. © 2023, The Authors. The main challenge in AM processes of continuous fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is the lack of matured technology, advanced polymers and nanocomposites that match the performance and fabrication requirements. This research addressed the fabrication technology and materials concerns. The research presented herein developed a fast-curing porous carbon nanofiber z-threaded CFRP (P-ZT-CFRP) prepreg tape using a radial flow alignment technique (RFA) and fabricated the P-ZT-CFRP laminate using MCFA-AM. For comparison, two porous CFRP (P-CFRP) laminates cured by the Out-Of-Autoclave Vacuum-Bag-Only (OOA-VBO) method were also manufactured. The interlaminar shear strengths (ILSS) for the two P-CFRPs were 38.5 MPa (with 50 % acetone in resin to create voids) and 43.8 MPa (with 20 % acetone) respectively. The P-ZT-CFRP (with 20 % acetone) manufactured with the MCFA-AM (without vacuum) produced the ILSS of 54.5 MPa. The 0.5 wt% CNF z-threads in resin provided an effective structural integrity enhancement in the porous laminate. The specific ILSS per weight of the P-ZT-CFRP was 83% and 87% of that from the control CFRP manufactured by OOA-VBO (75.5 MPa) and the regular CFRP produced by MCFA-AM (70.5MPa), respectively;which indicated the interesting potentials to tailor lightweight and high-strength CFRPs using AM and nanomaterials. Signal Temporal Logic Meets Convex-Concave programming: A Structure-Exploiting SQP Algorithm for STL Specifications

This study considers the control problem with signal temporal logic (STL) specifications. Prior works have adopted smoothing techniques to address this problem within a feasible time frame and solve the problem by applying sequential quadratic programming (SQP) methods naively. However, one of the drawbacks of this approach is that solutions can easily become trapped in local minima that do not satisfy the specification. In this study, we propose a new optimization method, termed CCP-based SQP, based on the convex-concave procedure (CCP). Our framework includes a new robustness decomposition method that decomposes the robustness function into a set of constraints, resulting in a form of difference of convex (DC) program that can be solved efficiently. We solve this DC program sequentially as a quadratic program by only approximating the disjunctive parts of the specifications. Our experimental results demonstrate that our method has a superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art SQP methods in terms of both robustness and computational time. A novel strong duality-based reformulation for trilevel infrastructure models in energy systems development

We explore the class of trilevel equilibrium problems with a focus on energy-environmental applications and present a novel single-level reformulation for such problems, based on strong duality. To the best of our knowledge, only one alternative single-level reformulation for trilevel problems exists. This reformulation uses a representation of the bottom-level solution set, whereas we propose a reformulation based on strong duality. Our novel reformulation is compared to this existing formulation, discussing both model sizes and computational performance. In particular, we apply this trilevel framework to a power market model, exploring the possibilities of an international policymaker in reducing emissions of the system. Using the proposed methods, we are able to obtain globally optimal solutions for a five-node case study representing the Nordic countries and assess the impact of a carbon tax on the electricity production portfolio. Split Fine-Tuning for Large Language Models in Wireless Networks

Fine-tuning is the process of adapting the pre-trained large language models (LLMs) for downstream tasks. Due to substantial parameters, fine-tuning LLMs on mobile devices demands considerable memory resources, and suffers from high communication overhead and long fine-tuning delay. In this paper, we propose an efficient LLM fine-tuning scheme in wireless networks, named Split Fine-Tuning (SFT), which can accommodate LLM fine-tuning on mobile devices. Specifically, an LLM is split into a server-side part on the edge server and a device-side part on the mobile device to satisfy the device-side memory constraint. All devices share a server-side model and perform parallel fine-tuning to reduce fine-tuning delay. In addition, to reduce significant communication overhead incurred by data exchange between devices and the edge server, we propose a data compression scheme by jointly leveraging sparsification, stochastic quantization, and lossless encoding methods. Furthermore, we formulate a fine-tuning delay minimization problem under accuracy and memory constraints, taking device heterogeneity and channel dynamics into account. To solve the problem, the nonlinear mixed-integer problem is decoupled into two subproblems in different timescales. The two-timescale resource management algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the compression rate and transformer block allocation in the large timescale using the augmented Lagrangian method, and determine spectrum resource allocation in the small timescale via sequential quadratic programming. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can reduce the fine-tuning delay by up to 80.2% and communication overhead by 93.6% compared to state-of-the-art benchmarks, while satisfying device-side memory and model accuracy constraints. Hydrogels are soft and wet materials with high biocompatibility, and are expected as a material for soft robots that have a touch similar to that of human skin. However, hydrogels have some technical drawbacks such as high-water evaporation rate, different touch and temperature from that of human skin. The purpose of this research is to reproduce a touch of hydrogels similar to the human skin. We designed a flow channel inside the hydrogel for supplying and circulating warm water to mitigate drying of the gel. With this mechanism mass loss due to drying was decreased by 43%. In addition, we found that coating hydrogels with solvent and polymer changes its surface friction coefficient. © The Electrochemical Society.

In this quantitative study, we examined the awareness of mobile health (mHealth) applications among Taiwan’s university students, particularly the government-operated My Health Bank application. The My Health Bank application allows users to access their personal health information simply through their smartphone’s sensor-assisted facial recognition camera and fingerprint sensor. Whether these university students might help older adults to use this application if they perceive it to be helpful was also explored. Two instruments were used in this study, namely, the Perceptions toward My Health Bank (PMHB) and Geriatric Attitudes Scale (GAS). Two hundred twenty-five (225) university students from the departments of Senior Citizen Service management (n = 136) and Nursing (n = 89) at two universities participated in this study. The findings indicated low adoption of My Health Bank and related mHealth applications among students even though they had high adoption rates of smartphones. However, they perceived that the functions of this application are useful and should be promoted to older adults. Thus, building a basic foundation of mHealth and related technology courses is recommended to assist healthcare students in being well-prepared for working with older adults in the digital society. © MYU K.K.

With the rapid growth of the textile, leather, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries, concerns about pollutants in these sectors, especially dye pollutants, are increasing. This research characterizes bacterial nanocellulose acetate membranes made from Sargassum extract reinforced with copper oxide nanoparticles and tests their antibacterial properties and dye removal in water. Sargassum sp. extract was fermented using Acetobacter xylinum for 10 days, producing bacterial nanocellulose, which was then esterified to create bacterial nanocellulose acetate. Copper oxide nanoparticles were added to the bacterial nanocellulose acetate solution in varying concentrations, cast, and oven-dried. The membrane was analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, antibacterial activity, and dye removal. Results showed uniform copper oxide nanoparticles distribution on the membrane surface. Structure analysis revealed diffraction peaks at 35.44° and 38.57°, indicating a reduced crystalline index but improved membrane effectiveness. Antibacterial tests showed a zone of inhibition against bacterial growth, increasing with higher copper oxide nanoparticle content. The addition of copper oxide nanoparticles also influenced the dye removal capacity for Metanil Yellow, Congo Red, Eosin Yellow, Methylene Blue, and Malachite Green. The kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption process follows a pseudo-first-order model, with higher correlation coefficients (R2) compared to the pseudo-second-order model. © 2024 The Author(s)

The aim of our study is to evaluate the quality of water using machine learning methods. Potability is a subjective word that quantifies water quality. In this research, a variety of metrics were used to measure general potability of the water. The prescribed elements are applied like variable matrix to denote water quality. The article used three different classification methods, with success rates ranging from 84.27 to 93.16%, to predict the water quality class including ensemble approach like Random Forest (RFC), SVM for classification (SVC), as well as XGBoost. The Gradient Boosting approach, out of all the ones used, received the greatest accuracy (93.16%), precision (96.3%), recall (92.76%) and F-score (94.54%). Also, it achieved the least computational delay with a mean latency of 1.34 s. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Interactions of the cell with its environment are mediated by the cell membrane and membrane-localized molecules. Supported lipid bilayers have enabled the recapitulation of the basic properties of cell membranes and have been broadly used to further our understanding of cellular behavior. Coupled with micropatterning techniques, lipid bilayer platforms have allowed for high throughput assays capable of performing quantitative analysis at a high spatiotemporal resolution. Here, an overview of the current methods of the lipid membrane patterning is presented. The fabrication and pattern characteristics are briefly described to present an idea of the quality and notable features of the methods, their utilizations for quantitative bioanalysis, as well as to highlight possible directions for the advanced micropatterning lipid membrane assays. © 2023 Author(s).
