systems engineering often employs "-ilities", such as affordability, to represent various aspects of a system. While these "-ilities" are widely used, exact definitions for the terms can vary between individuals. While most definitions of affordability include some cost notion, only a subset balance cost against a benefit. Additionally, some definitions treat affordability as a binary constraint, a system either is affordable or it is not. Others define it in more continuous terms which could be treated as an objective to be maximized. While multiple definitions can be readily observed from different sources, the degree to which definitions for a concept such as affordability differs within a single organization has not been thoroughly studied. This paper presents results from a survey completed by 172 employees of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. Definitions of affordability from each participant are categorized ac-cording to how cost and benefit notions are used in the definition. Eight different categories of definitions were observed;however, 86 of the 172 definitions were categorized as involving a cost constraint with no clear benefit component. Due to the variety of definitions of affordability observed, practitioners should be cautious about assuming what stakeholders and fellow decision makers mean when using the term affordability. The use of affordability definitions categorized as involving only a cost constraint may result in the elimination of alternatives in a design space, rather than driving decision makers to continuously improve affordability. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. In the space community, there is a need to depart from traditional philosophies of spacecraft testing in order to get spacecraft in orbit faster. There is a growing trend to leverage more affordable and/or simple systems, along with a risk threshold that is accepting higher failures as a means to accomplish mission needs. This paper is one part of a larger research effort that seeks to find a middle way between traditional exquisite systems and high-volume, high-risk systems through balancing timelines via truncation/omission and the confidence in spacecraft survivability in nominal operations. This goal of this paper in particular is to characterize the frequency and time impacts of discrepancies found at the systems level of integration of test of 27 American spacecraft sampled from six constellations launched since circa 2000. This research considers statistical trends in categorical discrepancies (anomalies) during prelaunch integration and test (I&T) between past and present data. Additionally, initial preliminary anomaly trends in operational on-orbit data available from 11 of these spacecraft are also statistically analyzed in the same manner. These results will be further analyzed in future research to identify any correlations between prelaunch tests and operational space vehicle reliability, which will enable the characterizing space vehicle reliability through accounting for the assessed reliability of individual subsystems/components, together with the number and characteristics of component/system testing both performed and not performed. This in turn will be used to provide a quantitative means to demonstrate how the spacecraft I&T flow can be optimized for mission needs when balancing risk. © 2024, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Increasing energy demands globally have accelerated the development of renewable technologies including solar photovoltaics (PV). However, this development has unavoidably led to the emergence of significant volumes PV waste considering 20-30 years life span before End of Life (EOL). The standard decision makers practices for PV EOL are disposal to the landfill, recycling, or reuse. Due to complexity of the decision environment, this study aims to analyze and rank solar PV disposition alternative using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based on five main criteria including environmental, economic, social, policy and legislation and technical. AHP Aggregating Individual Priorities (AIP) aggregation method was utilized to evaluate the overall perspective of all the study participant. In addition, individual stakeholder group decision was assessed individually to understand potential different EOL disposition perspective from different stakeholder group. The findings of the analysis shows that the overall ranking of the alternatives based on the main criteria is leaning toward recycling compared to other alternatives. However, there is a variation in the decision between individual stakeholder group. © 2023 IEEE.

As electric vehicles (EVs) gain popularity, the demand for efficient EV routing and innovative charging solutions is increasing. This study proposes a novel integration of Temporal Multimodal Multivariate Learning (TMML) and the Time-Dependent Shortest Path (TDSP) algorithm to dynamically optimize EV routing while incorporating stationary and wireless charging systems. TMML continuously updates travel time distributions based on real-time observations, reducing uncertainties and enabling more accurate predictions. These updated distributions are utilized by TDSP to determine the most efficient routes, considering time-dependent travel times, and the availability of charging infrastructure. The methodology integrates Mobile Energy Distributors (MEDs) and Dynamic Inductive Charging (DIC). MED dynamically dispatches portable charging units, while DIC enables on-the-move charging through road-embedded systems. Real-world data from the Washington, DC metropolitan area, sourced from Regional Integrated Transportation Information System (***), provides granular insights into traffic patterns and charging infrastructure performance. This hybrid system operates by extracting feasible routes, evaluating them using TMML and TDSP, and selecting the optimal path to minimize travel time, waiting time, and charging costs. © 2025 IEEE.

Personal mark density-based high-performance Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) system using K-means clustering algorithm

To evaluate multiple choice question tests, optical forms are commonly used for large-scale exams and these forms are read by the OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) scanners. However, OMR scanners often misinterpret marks that have not been fully erased, which can lead to incorrect readings. To overcome that shortcoming and reduce the time and labor lost in the assessment process, we developed a novel system based on the density of each individual’s markings, providing a more personalized and accurate approach. Instead of reading according to a specific optical form template, a dynamic and flexible structure was generated where users can create own templates and obtain the model that reads according to that template. We also optimized certain aspects of the system for efficiency, such as image memory transfer and QR code reading. These optimizations significantly increase the performance of the OMR scanners. One of the key issues addressed is inaccurate reading of OMR scanners when a student doesn’t fully erase their markings or when markings are faint. After the scanning process, the proposed approach uses a K-means clustering algorithm to classify different density markings. This technique identifies each student’s personal marking density, enabling a more accurate interpretation of their responses. According to the experimental results, we performed 97.7% improvement compared to the misread optics scanned by the conventional OMR devices. In tests performed on 265.816 optical forms, we obtained an accuracy rate of 99.98% and a reading time of 0.12 seconds per optical form. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

In this paper, a new method to address the scheduling problem of a renewable energy community while considering network constraints and users' privacy preservation is proposed. The method decouples the optimization solution into two interacting procedures: conic projection(CP) and linear programming(LP) optimization. A new optimal CP method is proposed based on local computations and on the calculation of the roots of a fourth-order polynomial for which a closed-form solution is known. Computational tests conducted on both 14-bus and 84-bus distribution networks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in obtaining the same quality of solutions compared with that by a centralized solver. The proposed method is scalable and has features that can be implemented on microcontrollers since both LP and CP procedures require only simple matrix-vector multiplications.

Mental disorders such as suicidal behavior, bipolar disorder, depressive disorders, and anxiety have been diagnosed among the youth recently. Social media platforms such as Reddit have become popular for anonymous posts. People are far more likely to share on these social media platforms what they really feel like in their real lives when they are anonymous. It is thus helpful to extract people's sentiments and feelings from these platforms in training models for mental disorder detection. This study uses multi-task learning techniques to examine the estimation of behaviors and mental states for early mental disease diagnosis. We propose a multi-task system trained on three related tasks: mental disorder detection as the primary task, emotion analysis, and sentiment analysis as auxiliary tasks. We took the SWMH dataset, which included four main different mental disorders already labeled (bipolar, depression, anxiety, and suicide) and offmychest. We then added labels for emotion and sentiment to the dataset. The observed results are comparable to previous studies in the field and demonstrate that deep learning multi-task frameworks can improve the accuracy of related text classification tasks when compared to training them separately as single-task systems. © 2024 IEEE.

We consider a quadratic minimization problem with both fixed endpoints and its associated maximization problem from a viewpoint of complementarity. We show that a complementary identity with an elementary inequality generates a pair of (n-1)-variable minimization problem (primal) and (n + 1)-variable maximization one (dual). The identity produces an equality condition, which is a linear system of 2n-equation on 2n-variable. The condition splits into a pair of linear systems of (n-1)-equation on (n - 1)-variable and of (n + 1)-equation on (n + 1)-variable. The former solves the primal, while the latter does the dual. Both the optimal solutions are characterized by the Fibonacci sequence. The solutions are also given through dynamic programming. © 2024, Kyushu Institute of Technology. All rights reserved.

Process capability analysis for simple linear profiles

When a process is under statistical control, one is usually interested in evaluating process performance based on specification limits (SLs) provided by customer. This evaluation is referred to as process capability analysis. This study provides a new method to measure process capability index (PCI) for a simple linear profile based on its parameters. In this regard, the SLs for the proposed PCIs (SLs for the profile parameters) are presented based on SLs of the response variable while considering the in-control profiles. Simulation results reveal satisfactory performance for the proposed method considering absolute percentage error criterion. In addition, the minimum number of profile samples for estimation of the proposed PCIs are determined. A real case in calibration application is also considered to show the applicability of the proposed method in practice. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2023.

Simulation models are subject to uncertainty and sensitivity, meaning that even small variations of input can cause considerable fluctuations in the output results. Consequently, this can amplify the uncertainty associated with the simulation, thereby limiting the confidence one can have in its outcomes. To mitigate these effects, this paper suggests using a cooperative game theory-based feature importance method, which can identify uncertainty in a dataset, and provide additional insights that could be used in the development or analysis of a simulation model. A predator-prey scenario was considered, demonstrating its usefulness in identifying important parameters or features. By identifying the most influential parameters or features, this approach can help improve the accuracy, explainability, and reliability of simulation models as well as other models with highly variable input parameters. © 2023 IEEE.
