Nonconvex-concave (NC-C) finite-sum minimax problems have broad applications in decentralized optimization and various machine learning tasks. However, the nonsmooth nature of NC-C problems makes it challenging to design effective variance reduction techniques. Existing vanilla stochastic algorithms using uniform samples for gradient estimation often exhibit slow convergence rates and require bounded variance assumptions. In this paper, we develop a novel probabilistic variance reduction updating scheme and propose a single-loop algorithm called the probabilistic variance-reduced smoothed gradient descent-ascent (PVR-SGDA) algorithm. The proposed algorithm achieves an iteration complexity of ${\mathcal{O}}\left({{\varepsilon ^{ - 4}}}\right)$, surpassing the best-known rates of stochastic algorithms for NC-C minimax problems and matching the performance of the best deterministic algorithms in this context. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through numerical simulations.

In machine learning, one of the methods to solve multiclass classification problems is a framework called Error-Correcting Output Codes (ECOC), which constructs a multiclass classifier by combining a lot of binary classifiers. ECOC assigns binary codewords to each category, and the multiclass classification performance varies depending on the code. In this study, we treat each element of the codeword as a random variable and evaluate the average performance of ECOC. As a result, for M class classification if the number of binary classifiers is O(M), then the average error probability of various codes approaches that of MAP estimation. We show that the important points are the ratio between the number of binary classifiers and M and the difference between the maximum posterior probability and the second highest posterior probability for the categories. © 2024 IEEE.

The assurance of the operability of surface water treatment facilities lies in many factors, but the factor with the largest impact on said assurance is the availability of the necessary chemicals. Facilities across the country vary in their processes and sources, but all require chemicals to produce potable water. The purpose of this project was to develop a risk assessment tool to determine the shortfalls and risks in the water treatment industry's chemical supply chain, which was used to produce a risk mitigation plan ensuring plant operability. To achieve this, a Fault Tree was built to address four main areas of concern: (i) market supply and demand, (ii) chemical substitutability, (iii) chemical transportation, and (iv) chemical storage process. Expert elicitation was then conducted to formulate a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and develop Radar Charts, regarding the operations and management of specific plants. These tools were then employed to develop a final risk mitigation plan comprising two parts: (i) a quantitative analysis comparing and contrasting the risks of the water treatment plants under study and (ii) a qualitative recommendation for each of the plants-both culminating in a mitigation model on how to control and monitor chemical-related risks. © 2022 IEEE.

In the face of a significant public health event,consumers may either increase their panic buying or decrease their willingness to make *** study focuses on the impact of a significant public health event on offline store sales and consumer consumption,utilizing data from chain convenience stores in Hefei and Wuhu during early 2019 and early 2020 in *** a difference-in-differences model,the study investigates the effect of the significant public health event outbreak on weekly store sales,order numbers,and consumer consumption in terms of product quantities,transaction amount,average amount per order,and transaction *** from prior literature that finds hoarding behavior of consumers online,the findings of this paper indicate a significant reduction in stores’offline weekly sales and order numbers,as well as consumers’offline weekly consumption across the four dimensions,as a result of the significant public health event ***,employing a mediation model,the study explores the pathway of population mobility through which the significant public health event adversely affects offline ***,subset analysis is conducted for stores located in different areas and consumers with varying characteristics,revealing that the aforementioned conclusions predominantly apply to stores situated in office areas and residential areas,as well as consumers with either no apparent preference for different product categories or a noticeable preference for food.

System Architecture, its derived requirements and decision analysis performed, are often attributed to defining 70% of the cost and capabilities of a system. However, after nearly two decades of Model Based systems engineering (MBSE), there is a lack of architecture focused methodologies and tools to aid programs in creating a robust, transdisciplinary system architecture. One notable exception is the Thales developed Architecture Analysis and Design Integrated Approach (ARCADIA) method. The ARCADIA Architecture Development Method (ADM) provides instance-based methodologies for each ADM step with rich viewpoints and views to ensure a robust architecture is obtained. As the goal of the proposed methodology is to rapidly create a robust, transdisciplinary system architecture, ARCADIA was selected for its native alignment with this goal. However, the ARCADIA method is like a framework and requires a defined methodology to be applied to it to determine what views, and in what order, constitutes the desired architectural model. The proposed methodology defined these elements based on alignment with the IEEE 15288:2015 architecture standard, and to further the goals of ease of learning, rapid modeling, and reduced modeler workload/errors. In addition, the proposed methodology adds multiple supplemental views into the system model to add context and ensure a transdisciplinary architecture is realized. The proposed methodology also stresses the integration of decision analysis and requirements derivation into all ADM steps to ensure a complete architecture is realized prior to the development phase. Some basic qualitative findings from a partial test of the proposed methodology are described herein. A larger quantitative comparison between the proposed methodology and other MBSE standards is planned for Fall 2023. © 2023 IEEE.

The 2011 flood in Thailand exposed significant vulnerabilities in industrial areas, highlighting the necessity for enhanced disaster risk management through Area-Business Continuity management (Area-BCM). This preliminary study focuses on identifying how stakeholders rely on information from each other to improve disaster preparedness and response. The research involves systematically identifying Area-BCM stakeholders and designing interview questions, which are evaluated by experts using the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) to ensure relevance and clarity. All interview questions surpassed the IOC threshold of 0.5, confirming their effectiveness in capturing information interdependencies. Expert feedback led to refinements in the questions, underscoring the importance of tailored data collection. This initial plan provides a critical foundation for understanding information interdependence and highlights the importance of well-designed data collection methods. The findings have significant implications for developing more resilient disaster management strategies in industrial areas, emphasizing the need for precise and relevant stakeholder communication to enhance Area-BCM effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

With the popularization of Lean Thinking and Continuous Improvement, there is an increasing motivation for companies to find more efficient ways of producing. However, it is common for companies to test improvements in their processes in a real context, which implies stopping production or allocating extra resources. These experiments can be easily tested using simulation software, which allows the user to compare a large number of variables acting on the assembly cells and how they will influence production results. This way, less time and money are spent in searching for the best solution. Therefore, this article intends to emphasize the importance of this type of software with an example of its application in a project developed in an electrical devices production industry. Inthis paper many improvements in dealing with energy quality issues that could arise in electrical drive systems using asynchronous machines are presented. A series active power filter is used in electrical drive systems with induction motors to reduce harmonic current and voltage. We also propose a variety of active power filters with hysteresis current value control. Lastly, some experimental results for an electrical drive system utilizing an induction motor and a PWM converter are provided. These findings are followed by a discussion of the system's energy quality issues. © 2023 IEEE.
