Lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles are attracting attention as an energy source for the next generation of transportation, but replacing gasoline vehicles requires significant improvement in short mileage and slow charging speed. To overcome the problems, it is essential to improve the specific capacity and electrical conductivity of carbon material used as an anode and a conductive agent. In this study, a descriptor vector (dataset) was constructed by extracting structural-related parameters from a total of 21 carbon samples and experimentally obtaining objective variables. The capacity and conductivity as sensitive variables are shown to be the crystal size of the c-axis and the full width at half maximum of 2D peak, respectively. And they can also describe as "Specific capacity = 374 × (Lc2)0.55 / (53.90.55 + (Lc2)0.55)" and "Ln (Electrical conductivity2) = –1.69 × Ln (FWHM2D / Electrical conductivity) + 8.03". As result of analyzing the capacity with Hill equation, the intercalation of lithium ions through the basal surface at edge determines the amount of lithium ions, and as ion is intercalated, the interlayer distance increases and then returns to the original distance. By verifying with experimental data from 27 samples from previous studies, we could validate that these correlation equations are also applicable to other carbon materials. © 2023, The Authors. Real-time anomaly detection for very short-term load forecasting

Although the recent load information is critical to very short-term load forecasting(VSTLF), power companies often have difficulties in collecting the most recent load values accurately and timely for VSTLF *** paper tackles the problem of real-time anomaly detection in most recent load information used by *** paper proposes a model-based anomaly detection method that consists of two components, a dynamic regression model and an adaptive anomaly threshold. The case study is developed using the data from ISO New England. This paper demonstrates that the proposed method significantly outperforms three other anomaly detection methods including two methods commonly used in the field and one state-of-the-art method used by a winning team of the Global Energy Forecasting Competition 2014. Finally, a general anomaly detection framework is proposed for the future research.

Understanding the urban heat problem, which is intensifying owing to urbanization and climate change, has become a great challenge. Evaluating the thermal environment of urban spaces and predicting changes based on urban planning are essential for developing optimal urban cooling plans. Models using numerical methods are efficient and flexible for accurately simulating thermal comfort in various spatial arrangements in urban areas. In this study, we developed a three-dimensional urban surface model to evaluate the thermal comfort of humans by reflecting complex urban environments. We analyzed the thermal comfort according to the angular change of east–west streets, which are vulnerable to heat, and found that a change of 12.5° has a significant effect on the heat felt by the person on the sidewalk. The results suggest that spatiotemporal thermal comfort simulations considering the orientation of the streets and analytical planning are necessary to efficiently cool the city. This model can be used to develop efficient cooling strategies to achieve sustainable cities. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Multimodal facilities are being built in a majority of urban areas to accommodate both motorized and non-motorized traffic. The resulting transportation system is susceptible to complex interactions between different modes and users. These complex interactions are hard to quantify and capture on a regular basis. There is a need to rely on a microsimulation platform to replicate such real-world scenarios and forecast future conditions. This study focuses on assessing the effect of heterogeneous traffic conditions involving multiple modes like light rail transit (LRT), walking, bicycling, and motorized traffic on vehicle delay at intersections using Vissim traffic simulation software. A 2.5-mile urban arterial corridor comprising of seven at-grade and two grade-separated signalized intersections along US-29 route in the city of Charlotte, NC, USA was chosen for analysis and modeling. Base simulation model was developed by replicating the traffic scenario for the year 2018 (without LRT and non-motorized traffic). External controllers like VisVAP and Viswalk were used to assign signal priority and model heterogenous traffic conditions. The vehicle operational performance of the corridor improved along the major street after the addition of the LRT. An increase in vehicle delay on the major street was observed with an increase in the non-motorized traffic. Contrarily, the operational performance of the cross-streets at at-grade intersections did not see any significant change due to the addition of non-motorized traffic. The proposed framework assists planners to assess the impact of adding a new transit system like LRT and associated non-motorized traffic on the urban corridor. © 2022

Optimal sizing and siting of distributed generation (DG) units play an important role for improving voltage profile and reducing power losses. Moreover, battery energy storage system (BESS) units may help peak shaving. This paper presents a two stage approach, first of which aims optimal DG unit allocation, and second aims to determine optimal location and operation of BESS units. The problem formulation adopted due to the regulations in Turkey that supports DG units (Photovoltaics-PVs and Wind Turbines-WTs) with maximum unit size of 1 MW. A recently developed heuristic optimization method named as Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm is used for obtaining near optimal solutions. We tested the developed model by using 33 and 141 bus distribution test systems.

Weather-dependent distributed renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics (PVs) and wind turbines (WT) are increasingly being connected to distribution networks (DNs). Increased penetration of these intermittent sources brought the necessity of using energy storage systems (ESSs) to achieve the intended benefits. This study presents an optimization process to determine optimal numbers, sizes, locations and distributed energy resources (DERs) as well as to determine the optimal operating strategy of ESSs in a distribution network. The objective is to improve the voltage profile and to minimize the installation costs. The proposed multi-objective formulation problem is solved by using ant lion multi-objective optimization algorithm. At the second part of the study, optimal values are tested with monthly extreme distributions and the impacts of load and distributed generation volatilies on the voltage profiles which were determined by Pareto-optimal solution candidates are analysed. Simulations were performed on 33 bus radial distribution system using Matlab. Finally the benefits obtained by the optimal solutions with less risk are compared.

In order to evaluate the lethality and injury radius of fragments and weaken the average specific kinetic energy, the calculation model of average specific kinetic energy of stun grenade fragments is established based on the Monte Carlo subdivision projection simulation. With the joint simulation method of LS-DYNA and programming, the calculation model of the specific kinetic energy of the semi-prefabricated fragments is solved and compared at different initiation points of the same charge. The mass distribution, vertical target distribution, average specific kinetic energy threshold and safety radius of the whole time-domain fragments at the initiation points 1.5 cm, 3 cm, 4.5 cm, 6 cm, 7.5 cm and 9 cm from the top of the shell are obtained. For the same charge parameters, the results show that the number of fragments near the initiation point of the charge center is less, the mass mean value and standard deviation are larger, and the threshold value of specific kinetic energy is lower than that of both ends of charge;the injury radius of the initiation points 1.5 cm, 6 cm and 9 cm is 4.9 m, 2.94 m and 4.1 m respectively. The initiation point near the charge center can significantly reduce the injury radius of the fragments and improve the safety of the stun grenade.

Tracking multiple moving objects in real-time in a dynamic threat environment is an important element in national security and surveillance system. It helps pinpoint and distinguish potential candidates posing threats from other normal objects and monitor the anomalous trajectories until intervention. To locate the anomalous pattern of movements, one needs to have an accurate data association algorithm that can associate the sequential observations of locations and motion with the underlying moving objects, and therefore, build the trajectories of the objects as the objects are moving. In this work, we develop a spatio-temporal approach for tracking maritime vessels as the vessel's location and motion observations are collected by an Automatic Identification System. The proposed approach is developed as an effort to address a data association challenge in which the number of vessels as well as the vessel identification are purposely withheld and time gaps are created in the datasets to mimic the real-life operational complexities under a threat environment. Three training datasets and five test sets are provided in the challenge and a set of quantitative performance metrics is devised by the data challenge organizer for evaluating and comparing resulting methods developed by participants. When our proposed track association algorithm is applied to the five test sets, the algorithm scores a very competitive performance. © 2020, CC BY-NC-SA.

Aiming at the typical engineering problem of black cotton soil(BCS)subgrade under the alternation of dry and wet climate in the region of Nairobi,Kenya,this paper takes the pavement structure as the research object,and the numerical calculation model of BCS subgrade is established based on the consolidation coupling theory of unsaturated *** the modulus and thickness of the subbase as variables,the deformation characteristics and additional stresses of different pavement structures are *** the adaptability of different pavement structures to replacement treatment subgrade of BCS is evaluated by gray incidence decision analysis *** results show that whatever the pavement structure is,neither subgrade modulus nor thickness is sensitive to the pavement surface deformation,and the deformation differences between each pavement structure are more obvious in wet season;the additional stress at control layer bottom and pavement surface decreases with the increase of subbase modulus,whereas the stress may increase at subbase bottom;the additional stress at subbase bottom,control layer bottom and pavement surface all decreases with the increase of subbase thickness for pavement Structure I and *** pavement Structure III,the change of subbase thickness is not sensitive to the additional stress at the control layer bottom and pavement surface,whereas the stress at subbase bottom increases with the increase of subbase *** is concluded that the most adaptable structure is pavement Structure I,which can minimize the comprehensive level of pavement settlement and additional stress.
