Data science for motion and time analysis with modern motion sensor data

The motion-and-time analysis has been a popular research topic in operations research, especially for analyzing work performances in manufacturing and service operations. It is regaining attention as continuous improvement tools for lean manufacturing and smart factory. This paper develops a framework for data-driven analysis of work motions and studies their correlations to work speeds or execution rates, using data collected from modern motion sensors. The past analyses largely relied on manual steps involving time-consuming stop-watching and video-taping, followed by manual data analysis. While modern sensing devices have automated the collection of motion data, the motion analytics that transform the new data into knowledge are largely underdeveloped. Unsolved technical questions include: How the motion and time information can be extracted from the motion sensor data, how work motions and execution rates are statistically modeled and compared, and what are the statistical correlations of motions to the rates? In this paper, we develop a novel mathematical framework for motion and time analysis with motion sensor data, by defining new mathematical representation spaces of human motions and execution rates and by developing statistical tools on these new spaces. Developing strategies to promote adequate dietary intake in children experiencing toxic stress could potentially reduce the cognitive impact on the brain and promote physical and mental health. The purpose of this research was to explore the impact of an afterschool agricultural and nutrition program on dietary behavior in 18 at-risk youth. We examined dietary intake and used Photovoice and semi-structured interviews to explore factors relating to dietary behavior. Results indicated higher intakes of fruit, vegetables and milk compared to a national sample. Further, the youth participants discussed the impact of the program on their dietary behavior through key socio-environmental and cognitive factors. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Cartilaginous fishes possess gel-filled tubular sensory organs called Ampullae of Lorenzini (AoL) that are used to detect electric fields. Although recent studies have identified various components of AoL gel, it has remained unclear how the molecules are structurally arranged and how their structure influences the function of the organs. Here we present the first structural description of AoL gel using microscopy and small angle x-ray scattering, revealing that the material is colloidal in nature. To assess the relative function of the gel’s protein constituents, we compared the microscopic structure, x-ray scattering, and proton conductivity properties of the gel before and after digestion with proteolytic enzymes. We discovered that while proteins were largely responsible for conferring the stiffness of the gel, their removal did not diminish proton conductivity. The findings described here lay the groundwork for more detailed studies into the specific interactions of molecules inside AoL gel at the nanoscale. © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Groundwater is one of the important ecological elements which are now considered as vulnerable resources. The absence and shortage of this precious resource can be grown into an ecologically fragile condition. So, identification of this nature of groundwater resources can be useful for proper concern about this resource and its associated measures. The accurate and meaningful prediction of groundwater potential is a very important need for management of water resources in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Though others have modeled predictions of groundwater distribution using various statistical and machine learning methods, this study tested alternative decision tree (ADTree) and the credal decision tree (CDT) as standalone models as well as in ensembles with dagging, bagging, and decorate. Eighteen groundwater potential conditioning factors (lithology, convergence index, drainage density, elevation, distance to fault, fault density, height above nearest drainage (HAND), distance to surface, train surface texture, topographical wetness index (TWI), land use/land cover, stream transport index (STI), topographical position index (TPI), multi-resolution index of valley bottom flatness (MRVBF), profile curvature (PrC), plan curvature (PC), slope angle, and rainfall) were measured and compiled for 188 spring locations and 188 non-spring locations in the Tabriz Plain of East Azerbaijan Province, Iran. The conditioning factors were tested for multi-collinearity and there was none. The conditioning factors were examined and weighted for their importance for predicting groundwater potential and the data were modeled. The models were trained using 70% of the database and tested with the data for the remaining 30% of the locations. The results indicate that the six ensembles for both decision tree models surpassed the standalone decision trees in terms of success and accuracy. ABSTRACTmanagement information systems (MIS) have an interdisciplinary structure. Naturally, it develops and changes with the influence of other fields. This study tries to analyze MIS through academic studies on this topic. In this context, the analysis included 25304 articles published in the Scopus database from 2016 to 2021. Then, the performance analysis, part of bibliometric analysis, was used to measure the research productivity and impact of authors, institutions, countries, and journals. This way, the field’s most influential authors, institutions, countries, and journals were determined. Afterward, the articles were gathered under 15 categories with topic modeling. These categories were examined on an annual basis, and more detailed results were tried to be revealed. This study both revealed the primary lines of the MIS field and ended up being a guide for researchers about the topics they can focus on in the future.

Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records

Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multibillion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is particularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era. This local order refinement signals time-independent mechanisms underlying annual and career achievement in professional sports, meaning that appropriately renormalized achievement metrics can be used to compare players from eras with different season lengths, team strategies, rules – and possibly even different sports. The well-functioning markets of business transfers can bring competitive advantage regionally and nationally. At the same time, management and leadership culture in transferred companies are in crucial role for the success or failure of the transferring situations. Valuing business transferring and the organizational success of transfers from the profit and loss statement or return of assets or investment point of view, can raise challenges. This article reveals a different way for valuing business transferring and organizational success of transfer. A cash flow earnings-based method that can take into account the changes happening in different kinds of processes. Through this study there is also brought up some of those factors that have huge impact on the success of transfers. This paper presents a novel system architecture that integrates blind source separation with joint beat and downbeat tracking in musical audio signals. The source separation module segregates the percussive and non-percussive components of the input signal, over which beat and downbeat tracking are performed separately and then the results are aggregated with a learnable fusion mechanism. This way, the system can adaptively determine how much the tracking result for an input signal should depend on the input's percussive or non-percussive components. Evaluation on four testing sets that feature different levels of presence of drum sounds shows that the new architecture consistently outperforms the widely-adopted baseline architecture that does not employ source separation. Understanding the decisions made and actions taken by increasingly complex AI system remains a key challenge. This has led to an expanding field of research in explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), highlighting the potential of explanations to enhance trust, support adoption, and meet regulatory standards. However, the question of what constitutes a "good" explanation is dependent on the goals, stakeholders, and context. At a high level, psychological insights such as the concept of mental model alignment can offer guidance, but success in practice is challenging due to social and technical factors. As a result of this ill-defined nature of the problem, explanations can be of poor quality (e.g. unfaithful, irrelevant, or incoherent), potentially leading to substantial risks. Instead of fostering trust and safety, poorly designed explanations can actually cause harm, including wrong decisions, privacy violations, manipulation, and even reduced AI adoption. Therefore, we caution stakeholders to beware of explanations of AI: while they can be vital, they are not automatically a remedy for transparency or responsible AI adoption, and their misuse or limitations can exacerbate harm. Attention to these caveats can help guide future research to improve the quality and impact of AI explanations. © 2025, CC BY.
