In the present paper the hydrodynamic analysis of a floating, free-surface piercing, porous cylindrical body with vertical axis of symmetry is presented. Linear potential theory is assumed, and the associated diffraction and radiation problems are solved in the frequency domain. Analytical representations of the velocity potential are derived through the idealization of the flow field around the body using ring shaped fluid regions. The condition on the porous boundary is defined by applying the Darcy’s law, whereas the fluid velocity and its derivatives are matched at the common boundaries of adjacent fluid domains by enforcing appropriate continuity conditions. The theoretical hydrodynamic approach is supplemented by numerous results comparing the hydrodynamic forces and free-surface elevation at a porous cylindrical body with the corresponding ones on an impermeable solid. The presented results demonstrate that a porous surface can reduce the hydrodynamic loads on the body enhancing its survivability on severe wave conditions. © 2021 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Reliable modeling of river sediments transport is important as it is a defining factor of the economic viability of dams, the durability of hydroelectric-equipment, river susceptibility to pollution, suitability for navigation, and potential for aesthetics and fish habitat. The capability of a new machine learning model, fuzzy c-means based neuro-fuzzy system calibrated using the hybrid particle swarm optimization-gravitational search algorithm（ANFIS-FCM-PSOGSA） in improving the estimation accuracy of river suspended sediment loads（SSLs） is investigated in the current study. The outcomes of the proposed method were compared with those obtained using the fuzzy c-means based neuro-fuzzy system calibrated using particle swarm optimization（ANFIS-FCM-PSO）, ANFIS-FCM, and sediment rating curve（SRC） models. Various input combinations involving lagged river flow（Q） and suspended sediment（S） values were used for model development. The effect of Q and S on the model's accuracy also was assessed by including the difference between lagged Q and S values as inputs. The model performance was assessed using the root mean square error（RMSE）, mean absolute error（MAE）, Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency（NSE）, and coefficient of determination（R2） and several graphical comparison methods. The results showed that the proposed model enhanced the prediction performance of the ANFIS-FCM-PSO（or ANFIS-FCM） models by 8.14%（1.72%）, 14.7%（5.71%）, 12.5%（2.27%）, and 25.6%（1.86%）,in terms of the RMSE, MAE, NSE and R2, respectively. The current study established the potential of the proposed ANFIS-FCM-PSOGSA model for simulation of the cumulative sediment load. The modeling results revealed the potential effects of the river flow lags on the sediment transport quantification.

The Sortie Generation Rate (SGR) which refers to the number of sorties that can be generated per unit time, is a key indicator for evaluating the ability of an airbase. However, an aircraft carrier has many constraints compared to a land-based airbase, such as spatial and environmental constraints, making it difficult to apply existing land-based research to analyze aircraft carrier operations. On the other hand, the Sortie Generation Process (SGP) on an aircraft carrier is similar to a logistics/production system in that sorties are generated through aircraft. Therefore, this study proposes a framework for analyzing the SGP on an aircraft carrier using discrete event simulation and defines the classes that make up the simulation. In addition, SGP analysis simulations were implemented using the proposed framework and several experiments were performed to demonstrate the feasibility of applying the proposed framework in practice.

In repeat-pass interferometric synthetic aperture radar (In-SAR), the coherence loss derived from temporal decorrelation can be modeled using an exponential decay function. Many researches have investigated the relationships between decay parameters over various land-cover types for C-band SAR satellites. Although ALOS PALSAR provides many L-band SAR images, its revisit time was insufficient for understanding the rapid exponential drop in temporal decorrelation. Due to the lack of an appropriate archived dataset, analyzing the decay parameters for L-band SAR was a challenging task. In this study, we processed four-year interferometric pairs derived from ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 full-aperture ScanSAR images. This dataset has a 14 day minimum temporal interval. We selected Nairobi, Kenya, in the middle of the East African rift, as the study area and investigated how decay functions differ over multiple land-cover types. In addition, we compared decay models for Sentinel-1 interferograms. This study demonstrates that the decay parameters of L-band coherence completely differs across forest types, whereas C-band coherence is low coherence regardless of forest type.

Analyzing the behaviors of pedestrians and cyclists in interactions with autonomous systems using controlled experiments: A literature review

Urban transportation is set to undergo a profound transformation with the advent of autonomous systems such as autonomous vehicles, automated buses, and sidewalk delivery robots. To promote safe, sustainable, and inclusive urban mobility, understanding and predicting the behaviors of pedestrians and cyclists, including their intentions, decisions, and movements, when they interact with autonomous systems becomes crucial. Gaining a thorough understanding of these complex interactions can not only improve the safety, efficiency, and acceptance of autonomous systems but also enhance the design and implementation of these technologies. Through a comprehensive review of the literature spanning the years 2014 to 2023, we identify 99 articles that empirically investigate the interactions of humans and autonomous systems. Based on our overview of progress and challenges within this field, we further identify five research gaps that future research should address to enhance human-autonomous system interactions, including: (1) scaling up experimental scenarios to multi-user and multi-modal setups to better represent real-world challenges, (2) emphasizing safety-critical scenarios that are difficult to achieve in real-world environments by applying virtual reality, (3) incorporating diverse behavioral data from the human perspective to deepen the understanding of vulnerable road user behavior and decisions, (4) embracing continuous and real-time interaction to better predict dynamic future environments, and (5) enhancing the generalization ability to ensure realism and broad applicability. This review article offers valuable insights for the growing human-autonomous system research community, specifically those interested in leveraging controlled experiments to enhance the understanding and prediction of pedestrians' and cyclists' behaviors in future urban environments.

Sensor network localization (SNL) problems require determining the physical coordinates of all sensors in a network. This process relies on the global coordinates of anchors and the available measurements between non-anchor and anchor nodes. Attributed to the intrinsic non-convexity, obtaining a globally optimal solution to SNL is challenging, as well as implementing corresponding algorithms. In this paper, we formulate a non-convex multi-player potential game for a generic SNL problem to investigate the identification condition of the global Nash equilibrium (NE) therein, where the global NE represents the global solution of SNL. We employ canonical duality theory to transform the non-convex game into a complementary dual problem. Then we develop a conjugation-based algorithm to compute the stationary points of the complementary dual problem. On this basis, we show an identification condition of the global NE: the stationary point of the proposed algorithm satisfies a duality relation. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Due to its ease of deployment and high mobility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained great popularity for a variety of applications. To conduct high-level and complicated tasks such as search/rescue missions and target identification, deep learning functions at UAVs are required. To this end, distributed learning methods such as federated learning (FL) and split learning (SL) have been proposed. In this paper, we investigate the SL assisted image classification task in a multi-UAV system for applications such as area exploration and object detection. Specifically, the whole deep learning model is cut into the UAV-side model and BS (base station)-side model. Each UAV performs forward propagation on UAV-side model by using the locally gathered images, and sends the smashed data to the BS. The BS performs forward and backward propagation based on the smashed data, and sends back the gradients of the cut layer to the UAVs, which is used for the backward propagation of the UAV-side model. The performance was evaluated using an aerial perspective geographic dataset, and the effectiveness of the proposed system was validated by comparing with FL-based and centralized learning methods. It was found that SL can significantly reduce computation time at UAV compared with FL, and is particularly effective with non-IID (independent and identically distributed) dataset. SL also requires less data during the training initial phase and has a faster convergence speed compared to centralized learning.

In this paper, we propose a novel disaster damage detection method using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometric analysis. SAR interferometric coherence analysis is an effective method for disaster monitoring especially in the urban area, where the amplitude of SAR image changes only slightly unless the damage level is high. One drawback of the interferometric coherence-based analysis is the existence of the Cramér-Rao lower bound. That is, a small spatial window for its ensemble averaging leads significant bias while a large window makes its spatial resolution worse. To solve this problem, we propose to extend the ensemble average window towards temporal domain by increasing the number of interferometric pairs. Conventional methods which use multiple interferometric pairs firstly calculate coherence values independently. Instead, the proposed method unifies the interferograms first. We report some preliminary experimental results showing the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Sensor network localization (SNL) is a challenging problem due to its inherent non-convexity and the effects of noise in inter-node ranging measurements and anchor node position. We formulate a non-convex SNL problem as a multiplayer non-convex potential game and investigate the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium (NE) in both the ideal setting without measurement noise and the practical setting with measurement noise. We first show that the NE exists and is unique in the noiseless case, and corresponds to the precise network localization. Then, we study the SNL for the case with errors affecting the anchor node position and the inter-node distance measurements. Specifically, we establish that in case these errors are sufficiently small, the NE exists and is unique. It is shown that the NE is an approximate solution to the SNL problem, and that the position errors can be quantified accordingly. Based on these findings, we apply the results to case studies involving only inter-node distance measurement errors and only anchor position information inaccuracies.
