The paper presents a new approach to non-linear adaptive control for power systems using the properties of the degree of stability and the Lyapunov function. Sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of a stabilizing adaptive control law given a non-linear varying system. These conditions are in terms of the controller parameters and apply to systems in which the parameters are not all known. Thus, the control law obtained is implemented by purely local feedback. The stability of the system with the adaptive control is illustrated by the results of a simulation of a single-machine system model.

The higher order phase response functions contain important information about the behaviour of non-linear systems. Unfortunately, simply adopting the linear convention of plotting the phase between +/- 180 degrees produces higher order phase response functions which are virtually impossible to interpret. In the present paper two new algorithms are introduced to overcome these problems by unwrapping the multidimensional non-linear phase. The unwrapped phase responses are shown to be much easier to interpret and details of the implementation together with examples illustrating the new techniques are included. The need to find new sources of power has emerged as an important issue due to the existing worldwide increase in the demand of energy. In this way, nuclear fusion has turned out to be a promising source of this power which has lead to an increasing interest in finding solutions for the different tokamak control problems. In order to find appropriate controllers for tokamaks several kinds of codes and models have been developed. In this paper one of those codes, ASTRA, is used to simulate the performance of a tokamak. The aim of this paper is to show how the ASTRA code for tokamaks can be integrated into the Matlab - Simulink tool with the purpose of making more convenient and easier the development of suitable controllers for tokamaks. In particular as a demonstrative case study, a simple PID controller has been designed for the loop voltage of a tokamak. The simulations obtained from the example presented in this manuscript show the feasibility and the goodness of the proposed ASTRA - Matlab integration. This integration composes a new and innovative issue in the tokamak control area and it provides new possibilities to the development and application of advanced control schemes to the standardized and widely extended ASTRA simulation code for tokamaks.

When converting a time-domain model of a non-linear system into the frequency domain to get non-linear transfer functions, any constant or dc term in the time-domain model can have a significant effect on the time-to-frequency domain mapping. The constant term can not therefore simply be discarded as in the linear case. This paper examines this effect and a new mapping is derived to obtain the non-linear transfer functions from a general class of non-linear rational models in which a constant term is included. The results are illustrated using several examples. (C) 1995 Academic Press Limited
