The wind-wave excitations cause structural vibrations on the Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWT) pressing the power generation efficiency and reducing the life expectancy. In particular, tower-top displacement and barge-type platform pitch dynamics are extremely sensitive to wind speed and wave elevation to the point that may even lead to structural instability in extreme conditions. Having into account that computational techniques such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are widely used in artificial intelligence because of their strong predicting and forecasting capabilities, the aim of this article is to create a deep-layer ANN model that incorporates Oscillating Water Columns (OWCs) into the barge platform. This ANN model enables to address stability issues of the hybrid floating offshore wind platform. The proposed control-oriented model has been successfully validated to achieve adequate dynamic behavior and structural performance using FAST.

The electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem caused by power electronic switching devices and pulse width modulation (PWM) affects the normal operation of the motor drive system. In this paper, a random PWM based on unified modulation is proposed for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system. The theoretical basis of unified modulation and the implementation scheme of random modulation are analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed random PWM is verified by simulation.

Complexity of linearized quadratic penalty for optimization with nonlinear equality constraints

In this paper we consider a nonconvex optimization problem with nonlinear equality constraints. We assume that both, the objective function and the functional constraints, are locally smooth. For solving this problem, we propose a linearized quadratic penalty method, i.e., we linearize the objective function and the functional constraints in the penalty formulation at the current iterate and add a quadratic regularization, thus yielding a subproblem that is easy to solve, and whose solution is the next iterate. Under a dynamic regularization parameter choice, we derive convergence guarantees for the iterates of our method to an ϵ first-order optimal solution in O(1/ϵ3) outer iterations. Finally, we show that when the problem data satisfy Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz property, e.g., are semialgebraic, the whole sequence generated by our algorithm converges and we derive convergence rates. We validate the theory and the performance of the proposed algorithm by numerically comparing it with the existing methods from the literature. © 2024, CC BY.

The surge in urbanization and ensuing traffic congestion underscores the imperative for contemporary traffic flow control models. This paper explores the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) theory in the macroscopic domain of traffic flow control. It evaluates the accuracy and mathematical logic of simulation performance of related models, namely Greenshields, Newell-Daganzo, Greenberg, Underwood, and California. This paper employs thorough simulations that utilize a holistic three-dimensional(3D) analysis based on time, location, and density. It provides a comprehensive comparison and discusses specific features of each model. Additionally, a modification to the macroscopic model is proposed. The modified model overcomes the shortcomings of performing well only in some specific short ranges and achieves a full range of application effects. The study offers valuable guidance for real-life scenario selections and applications in the traffic domain.

In this paper, we address the safety verification problem of switched linear dynamical systems under arbitrary switching via barrier functions. Our approach is based on a notion of path-complete barrier functions, which utilizes a collection of barrier functions associated with a directed labeled graph that can encode all the possible switching sequences. We show that path-complete barrier functions effectively generalize notions of common and multiple barrier functions studied in existing literature, and can potentially provide less conservative conditions for safety verification. We demonstrate that, for switched linear systems, the inequalities imposed via path-complete barrier functions can be easily encoded into simple linear matrix inequalities under some assumptions on the regions of interest and appropriately chosen templates for the barrier functions. We also study the relationship between path-complete barrier functions and common barrier functions, and show that for any path-complete graph with an admissible path-complete barrier function, one can derive a suitable (possibly non-smooth) common barrier function by utilizing the path-complete barrier function. Finally, we utilize several examples to illustrate the effectiveness of our approach, and briefly discuss the challenges that lay foundations for future research.

Power electronic switching devices and pulse width modulation (PWM) not only improves the performance of motor drive systems, but also brings about common-mode voltage (CMV) issues, that challenging the normal operation of the system. This article proposes a zero common-mode voltage modulation strategy based on unified voltage modulation for a 60° Y-connected six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor system driven by a dual three-phase inverter. The theoretical basis and zero common-mode implementation scheme of unified modulation are analyzed, and the effectiveness of the proposed zero common-mode voltage modulation strategy is finally verified through simulation.

Operational loads have both static and dynamic characteristics. Dynamic loads occur during the operation of the considered mechanism, both during acceleration and deceleration periods, as well as during steady motion due to the movement of the moving element along an uneven path caused by the presence of the working environment on the elements over which the filter-press plates are moving. The dynamic loading is significant and affects the formation of plate-side displacements during their movement while performing the technological operation. Experimental studies of the load on the movement elements were conducted to determine optimal control modes for the filter-press plate movement mechanism, aiming to avoid overloading during stopping and filter jamming. To analyze the loading, discretization of random processes of the filter movement mechanism loading was performed. The sequence of calculating the statistical characteristics of the schematized dynamic process is presented. Based on experimental data, mathematical calculation of the results of schematization and the type of probability distribution law was carried out. To select the law that best reflects the experimental data distribution of load amplitudes, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit criterion was applied. According to the calculation results, it was found that the Weibull distribution law adequately reflects the distribution of amplitudes since its corresponding Kolmogorov-Smirnov criterion value is the smallest. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a new disturbance observer (DO)-based reinforcement learning (RL) control approach for nonlinear systems with unmatched (generalized) disturbances. While a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) is utilized to measure the plant uncertainties, disturbances can exist in the plant via distinct channels from those of the control signals; so-called mismatched disturbances are theoretically difficult to attenuate within the channel of the system's states. A generalized disturbance observer-based compensator is implemented to address the uncertainty cancellation problem by removing the influence of uncertainties from the output channels. Con-currently, a composite actor-critic RL scheme is utilized for approximating the optimal control policy as well as the ideal value function pertaining to the compensated system by solving a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation for both online and offline iterations simultaneously. Stability analysis verifies the convergence of the proposed framework. Simulation results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Path planning processes in 3D environments with obstacles are essential for ensuring the successful navigation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Recently, the artificial intelligence theory presents increasingly effective algorithms and tools to address such a robotics challenge. This paper presents a comparative study of two most commonly used Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms, namely Q-learning and SARSA learning. Through numerical experimentations under different navigation scenarios with varying levels of complexity and increasing numbers of static obstacles, key performance metrics like path’s length, total actions number, average reward, execution time and collision avoidance are considered and evaluated. The demonstrative results indicate that the Q-learning algorithm well addressed the challenges of UAVs’ path planning in static environments. The performance of such an algorithm has proven to be satisfactory and more promising for UAVs’ navigation in complex configuration spaces when compared to the SARSA algorithm.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for addressing Optimal control Problems (OCPs) with input-affine dynamics and cost functions. This approach adopts a Model Predictive control (MPC) strategy, wherein a controller is synthesized to handle an approximated OCP within a finite time horizon. Upon reaching this horizon, the controller is re-calibrated to tackle another approximation of the OCP, with the approximation updated based on the final state and time information. To tackle each OCP instance, all non-polynomial terms are Taylor-expanded about the current time and state and the resulting Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) PDE is solved via Sum-of-Squares (SOS) programming, providing us with an approximate polynomial value function that can be used to synthesize a bang-bang controller.
