This paper presents a new method for calculating a rational transfer function matrix using a Walsh expansion of the impulse response matrix. The algorithm proposed appears to be computationally convenient owing to certain properties of the Walsh functions. An example is given to illustrate the method.

The paper describes a simple frequency-domain method for the eigenvalue assignment of linear time-invariant multivariable 2-dimensional systems by means of state and output feedback. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established for single-input systems, whereas for the multi-input case, an equivalent single-input-system approach is employed to treat the problem.

This paper considers the problem of matching a system under control to a model using output feedback when both the given system and the model are described by nonparametric models, such as the impulse response matrix. Conditions are established for exact matching, the problem being reduced to that of solving a linear system of equations. The present paper constitutes the first results in non-parametric model matching which appear to be very suitable for practical applications.

A vector measure is discussed which makes available the full information as to the fitness of a model contained implicitly in the mean square error. The vector measure is called the fitting characteristic vector (FCV) in the paper. Dimensionless quantities of three kinds are extracted from the mean square error. The FCV is defined by these quantities. It is shown that each of the quantities has its own intrinsic meaning concerning the fitness. The following concepts are introduced in connection with the FCV: 1) the latent goodness-of-fit, 2) the basic latent goodness-of-fit, 3) the alienation of the realized goodness-of-fit from the latent goodness-of-fit, and 4) the basic alienation. A new view of the fitness is given on the basis of the above concepts. It is shown that the FCV can be used as a criterion for both identification and ex post facto evaluation. The relation between the FCV and Theil's inequality proportions is given. The FCV is applied to a real problem to show its usage and its effectiveness in ex post facto evaluation.

This paper presents a new method for synthesising decoupling controllers for linear time-invariant multivariable systems. The novel approach proposed is based on the idea of formulating, and subsequently solving, the decoupling problem as an exact model-matching problem. This, in effect, results in reducing the decoupling problem to one of solving a linear system of equations.

This paper describes the results of inference and hint-effect experiments, and analyses the human decision-making process from fuzzy-theoretic and concept-formational viewpoints. To begin with, we conduct a fuzzy-theoretic experiment on inference and show an interrelation among memory, newly-known information, and inference. Next, we discuss the problem of the decision-making process subject to a specific and newly given information. In other words, the fuzzy-theoretic experiment concerning with some hints in the estimation and decision processes of the card arrangement is conducted. Then, the concept-formational process is analysed clearly by means of the introduction of both the cusp-curved surface in catastrophe theory and fuzziness concept in fuzzy theory. Finally, we show the hint effect in the estimation and decision processes.
