Opinion and community formation in coevolving networks

In human societies, opinion formation is mediated by social interactions, consequently taking place on a network of relationships and at the same time influencing the structure of the network and its evolution. To investigate this coevolution of opinions and social interaction structure, we develop a dynamic agent-based network model by taking into account short range interactions like discussions between individuals, long range interactions like a sense for overall mood modulated by the attitudes of individuals, and external field corresponding to outside influence. Moreover, individual biases can be naturally taken into account. In addition, the model includes the opinion-dependent link-rewiring scheme to describe network topology coevolution with a slower time scale than that of the opinion formation. With this model, comprehensive numerical simulations and mean field calculations have been carried out and they show the importance of the separation between fast and slow time scales resulting in the network to organize as well-connected small communities of agents with the same opinion.

Generating stationary entangled states in superconducting qubits

When a two-qubit system is initially maximally entangled, two independent decoherence channels, one per qubit, would greatly reduce the entanglement of the two-qubit system when it reaches its stationary state. We propose a method on how to minimize such a loss of entanglement in open quantum systems. We find that the quantum entanglement of general two-qubit systems with controllable parameters can be controlled by tuning both the single-qubit parameters and the two-qubit coupling strengths. Indeed, the maximum fidelity Fmax between the stationary entangled state, ρ∞, and the maximally entangled state, ρm, can be about 2/3≈max{tr(ρ∞ρm)}=Fmax, corresponding to a maximum stationary concurrence, Cmax, of about 1/3≈C(ρ∞)=Cmax. This is significant because the quantum entanglement of the two-qubit system can be produced and kept, even for a long time. We apply our proposal to several types of two-qubit superconducting circuits and show how the entanglement of these two-qubit circuits can be optimized by varying experimentally controllable parameters.

Long-term care facilities are currently exposed to powerful forces demanding organisational change based on synergy and cooperation. The adoption of network structures is frequently regarded as an appropriate solution to this challenge by health politics. Focusing on the concrete example of the integrated long-term care network for the elderly in the Austrian land of Tyrol, the article aims (1) to explore which criteria the lawgiver formulated for the nursing cooperation structures, (2) to examine which targets and functional requirements the managers of the nursing institutions involved theoretically demand from a network structure in long-term care and (3) to investigate the functionality of the network by means of an empirical study focusing on the processes at interorganisational interfaces. Merging the major findings of the legal, theoretical and empirical enquiry, structural and functional efficiency criteria are derived, which are suggested as a framework for the evaluation of integrative nursing networks. The performance of a prototype RFID-wired NASA Cargo Transfer Bag (CTB), implementing the Rule-based analytic Asset Management for Space Exploration systems (RAMSES) architecture, was recently tested in both standard and reduced gravity conditions. In addition to gravity, other experimental variables included the material of the test articles (paper, metal, or liquid) and the number of articles within the container at one time. As predicted by ground test results, the best read rates were observed during reduced-gravity flight, with metals detected at 100% accuracy, paper at 96%, and water at roughly 93%, when tests were conducted with 30 articles of the material in the "smart CTB". These results, while still at the prototype level, demonstrate that the system holds significant potential for future flight implementation on ISS and future human spaceflight outposts. There is a growing body of experimental evidence suggesting that the Ca2+ signaling in ventricular myocytes is characterized by a high gradient near the cell membrane and a more uniform Ca2+ distribution in the cell interior [1]--[7]. An important reason for this phenomenon might be that in these cells the t-tubular system forms a network of extracellular space, extending deep into the cell interior. This allows the electrical signal, that propagates rapidly along the cell membrane, to reach the vicinity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), where intracellular Ca2+ required for myofilament activation is stored [1], [8]--[11]. Early studies of cardiac muscle showed that the t-tubules are found at intervals of about 2 lm along the longitudinal cell axis in close proximity to the Z-disks of the sarcomeres [12]. Subsequent studies have demonstrated that the t-tubular system has also longitudinal extensions [9]--[11], [13].

We investigate the electronic band structure of an undoped graphene armchair nanoribbon. We demonstrate that such nanoribbon always has a gap in its electronic spectrum. Even if the parameters of the noninteracting Hamiltonian are fine tuned to a point where single-electron calculations predict a metallic dispersion, the system becomes unstable toward the spontaneous deformation of the carbon-carbon bonds dangling at the edges of the nanoribbon. This deformation produces a spectral gap. However, to directly observe this instability it is necessary to have a precise control over the parameters of the system, which is rarely possible in practice. As a result, the nanoribbon’s Hamiltonian deviates from the instability point. This deviation plays the role of an effective external field biasing the instability in a particular direction. Since the radicals passivating the edge affect the dangling bonds, one may vary this field to some extent by choosing different radicals for passivation. Unfortunately, this approach lacks the accuracy required for a thorough cancellation of the effective field. Disordering the effective field is a more convenient tool of controlling the electronic properties. Such disorder can be introduced through random substitution of the radicals passivating the edges by different radicals. We show that disorder could tune a nanoribbon of finite length back to the gapless regime. This would significantly influence the electronic properties of the system. Specifically, we show that the electrical transport through a nanoribbon is strongly affected by edge disorder.

We analytically examine the excitation of surface Josephson plasma waves (SJPWs) in layered superconductors by an incident electromagnetic wave. The mechanism of excitation is related to the diffraction of the incident wave due to a small periodic modulation in the ab plane of the maximum c-axis Josephson current density. We show that the absorption of the incident wave can be substantially increased, for certain incident angles, due to the resonance excitation of SJPWs. The absorption increase is accompanied by a decrease in the specular reflection. Moreover, we find the dependence of the resonance value of the incident angle on the parameters of the superconductor and the frequency of the incident wave, and the depth of the modulations guaranteeing the total absorption (and total suppression of the specular reflection). Numerical examples of the resonance effects are presented for Bi2212 superconductors.

Reduction mechanism of natural ilmenite with graphite

Reduction of Bama ilmenite concentrate containing 49.78% TiO2 and 27.96% total Fe by graphite was studied using thermogravimetric analysis system under argon gas ambient from 850 to 1 400 ℃. The reduction degree of Bama ilmenite is enhanced with increasing temperature and the molar ratio of carbon to oxygen, and the reaction rate varies with temperature and reduction time simultaneously. The phase transformation, chemical composition, microstructure and morphology of reduced samples were investigated by using X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and energy disperse spectroscopy, respectively. The high content of impurities in Bama ilmenite evidently bates the reduction of ilmenite. Forming the enrichment zone of manganese prevents complete reduction of Fe2+. The reduction products are mostly reduced iron, rutile, reduced rutiles, Ti3O5 and pseudobrookite solid solution. The reduction kinetics was also discussed. The results show that the reduction temperature is a key factor to control reaction rate.
